Introduction
'There is no frigate like a book, to take us lands away, nor any courses like a page of prancing poetry. This traverse may the poorest take without oppress of a toll; how frugal is the chariot that bares a human soul.' This wonderful poem by Emily Dickinson always reminds me of the power of books. The power of reading. Children of all ages need to be exposed to all forms of literature. It crosses all boundaries and opens minds to cultures, interests, people and places. Reading is such an important skill to learn early and to enjoy! These websites explore resources for teachers to bring children's literature into their classrooms and the minds of our young.

CALL FOR PAPERS
THE FUN OF READING:
INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON CANADIAN CHILDRENS LITERATURE
Organised by the National Library of Canada
June 26-29, 2003
Ottawa Congress Centre, Ottawa, Canada
Conference website http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/forum
The year 2003 marks the 50th anniversary of the National Library of Canada. To celebrate this historic occasion, the National Library will host The Fun of Reading: International Forum on Canadian Childrens Literature .. The Forum a multidisciplinary conference and its companion activities, a variety of engaging public events with and for young people - will take place in Ottawa, with affiliated activities across Canada, from Thursday through Sunday, June 26-29, 2003.
The purpose of this initiative is to celebrate and promote Canadian childrens literature in all its rich cultural, linguistic and regional diversity and strengthen the presence of this literature within Canada and on the international stage.
A nations literature for children expresses the countrys values and realities - its languages and identities, history and geography, themes and images. Fittingly, Canadian childrens literature flourishes in both French and English and reflects the strong regional distinctiveness of the country. In recent years, it has been further enriched by the contributions of Aboriginal and culturally diverse Canadian creators.
Yet childrens literature is still a relatively young field in Canada and it faces many challenges. To strengthen mutual understanding and create opportunities for cooperation among those committed to this literature, the Forum will gather together for the first time all the partners whose efforts support our literature for young people: the writers, illustrators, and storytellers who create it; the translators, publishers, teachers, librarians, and booksellers who bring the books to children in Canada and abroad; young Canadian readers and their families; Canadian literature specialists from Canada and other countries, literacy groups, policy-makers, and the media.

Little Nobel Prizes of Childrens Literature

1998 Award Presentation Ceremony in New Delhi, India, on September 20
Tokyo - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has again this year been the main sponsor of the Hans Christian Andersen Awards, which it has sponsored since 1992 as part of the companys community and cultural activities. The award presentation ceremony will be held in New Delhi, India, on September 20, 1998. The winners of this years awards are the American author Katherine Paterson and the French artist Tomi Ungerer.
Established in 1956, the Hans Christian Andersen Awards are given every two years by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), a worldwide network of people involved with childrens books. IBBY presents the awards to one author and one illustrator whose overall works have contributed significantly to childrens books. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is the patroness of these awards, which are named after Denmarkfs celebrated writer of fairy tales. As the most prestigious international distinction given in the field of childrens literature, they are known as the Little Nobel Prizes.
The objectives of the Hans Christian Andersen Awards are to publicize globally the importance of childrens literature and to contribute to the healthy growth of children throughout the world. These objectives coincide with Nissans activities aimed at cultivating the dreams and imagination of children, which is one priority area of the companys community and cultural program. Nissan became involved in supporting the awards in 1992 when the continuation of the award program became doubtful because of the precarious economic situation of the sponsoring countries. Nissan became the main sponsor of the awards in 1994, and this year marks the fourth time the company has provided support for the award program.
