This is a wonderful message board, there are certified carseat safety technicians who post there on a daily basis and are dedicated to making sure every child rides safely, as well as everyday moms and dads who have experience in childseat safety. I have never had a question go unanswered there, even though I am not one of the regular posters. So, what have I learned? First and foremost, do NOT turn your child forward facing until they are at least 20 lbs AND one year of age. The reason for this is that an infant’s NECK BONE structure is not strong enough to withstand a forward facing crash before one year of age. Muscle control/strength has absolutely nothing to do with this. And please, don’t be frightened by the thought of your rear-facing baby breaking their legs in a crash because their feet touch the back of the seat, even if your pediatrician has advised turning your baby around early for this reason. There is nothing to back up this claim, and even if it COULD and WOULD happen, is a broken leg really worse than a broken neck and/or spine?
