One could start from the main tree lined Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins avenue , known as Alameda, and walk up the pedestrian only Paseo Ahumada , lined with a great number of shops. The Palacio de La Moneda palace, famous for having been bombed in 1973 and now serving as the seat of government, the Plaza de Armas main square and the Catedral Metropolitana cathedral are just some of the more outstanding sites. The Iglesia San Francisco church, built in 1687, is also worth a visit. It is the oldest church in Santiago and the only building from the colonial era that remains standing. Chile Chile
is located on the western side of South America and covers over 290,000 square miles. It is 2700 miles long with the average width of 110 miles. The length of Chile if placed in the northern hemisphere would stretch from the northern tip of Newfoundland in Canada to the southern tip of Florida and Cuba. The borders are defined by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Argentina by the east, and Bolivia and Peru to the north. The country has over 12,000,000 people with Roman Catholicism as the main religion. As Argentina , the climate, vegetation, and topography is as diversified as Europe. The climate ranges from cold and low temperatures in the south and in the Andes Mountains to dry and hot in parts of the north with moderate temperatures near central part by the Pacific Ocean. Vegetation varies from dry and arid to natural dense forests. A dense rain forest, rich in timber species, grows in the humid Lake District and Patagonia region and extends southward. The Andes Mountains that stretch along the border of Argentina and Chile have mountain peaks with elevations of over 20,000 feet that are covered with ice fields and glaciers. In addition to the specialized birding programs, Alto Andino offers small group tours through the 4 altiplano wilderness areas of northern Chile: Lauca National Park, Natural Monument Salar de Surire, National Vicuñas Reserve, and Isluga Volcano National Park. These less specialized tours offer a blend of Aymará culture and an abundance of birds and wildlife, all dominated by volcanoes and punctuated by flamingos. In this case a professional Chilean guide is used and treks may be included. Begin tours in Putre or Arica or Iquique . All tours are private. Reservations are necessary.

5 days starting from Arica (or 4 days starting Putre). This is our popular itinerary with focus the first day on Inca and other pre-Hispanic archeological attractions, then a day in Lauca Park with naturalist guide. Afterwards you'll head out for a 3 day trip across the Vicuñas Reserve, Natural Monument Salar de Surire, and the Isluga National Park. Last day of tour is in fishing village where there are marine mammals and other near-shore sea life.

    CHILE
    Introduction
    C
hile is a country of startling contrasts and extreme beauty, with attractions ranging from the towering volcanic peaks of the Andes to the ancient forests of the Lake District. There are a multitude of very good parks here, and plenty of opportunities for fine adventure travel. Chile is justly famous as the location of Torres del Paine, considered by many to be the finest nature travel destinations in all of South America.
    Location, Geography Climate
For anyone who has ever been fascinated by geography, the long, impossibly thin line of Chile has always produced a tiny moment of astonishment. Chile stretches over 4,300 km (2,700 mi) along the southwestern coast of South America, a distance roughly the same as that from San Francisco to New York, or Edinburgh to Baghdad. At the same time, its width never exceeds 240 km (150 mi), making the country more than eighteen times longer than its widest point.
In the center of the country, however, is a long and expansive river valley, a five hundred mile corridor occupied in the north by vineyards and great farms and in the south by primeval forests and enchanting lakes. Santiago, the capital, anchors the northern and more prosperous section of the central valley. The lush Lake District to the south, however, is the homeland of Chile's indigenous peoples, the Araucanians.
Also part of Chile are two notable Pacific possessions-the Juan Fernandez Islands and the famous Easter Island, both of which are administered as national parks. The Juan Fernandez islands are located about 670 km off the Chilean coast, while Easter Island is situated 3700 km distant.
