The European education of many Chilean intellectuals influenced the country's art, music and architecture. As a result art galleries, museums and a thriving theater scene are a large part of Chilean culture. Nobel Prize-winning poets Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda were products of Chile and, until the military coup of 1973, its cinema was among the most experimental in Latin America. The country's oppressed used folk music as an important vent, and was regularly performed overseas by exiles during Pinochet's reign. Religion is big in Chile and over 90% of the inhabitants are Roman Catholic, but evangelical Protestantism is becoming popular. Impressive and omnipresent best represents the country's Catholic architecture, from high-flying colonial churches to roadside shrines, some of which are amazing manifestations of folk art. Chile's official language is spanish, though many other native languages are still spoken. In the south there are perhaps half a million speakers of Mapuche and in the north, there are more than 20,000 speakers of Aymara.

Chile's battleground of culture vs. profit
  • Logging industry grows a forest of controversy on tracts claimed by indigenous people.
  • By Tim Vandenack Special to The Christian Science Monitor
As Jose Quintrel scans the rolling hills of Domingo Trangol, the rural Mapuche Indian community where he lives in south central Chile, he sees more than eucalyptus trees, wheat fields, and grazing sheep. "This is a battlefield," he says. Logging companies own a portion of this and other parcels throughout the region, but the Mapuches consider the land their ancestral territory. What has resulted is a frequently violent struggle, pitting the indigenous group, who fear that their agriculture-based, subsistence culture can't survive without more terrain, against the loggers, who say they paid for their real estate fair and square and are a vital part of Chile's economy. "A very strong cultural clash is taking place," says Jose Nain of the All Lands Council, a militant Mapuche group in Temuco, the regional capital. "There's a gulf between our culture and the economic powers." It's a common scenario throughout the Americas, says Charles Hale, associate director of the University of Texas' Long Institute of Latin American Studies - indigenous cultures fighting to survive amid encroaching development

The arts and the educational system of Chile are, to a large extent, based on European models. Nevertheless, a distinctive cultural tradition has evolved that combines elements of the various ethnic groups and has been influenced by the expansion of the national frontier. A. Education Chile's modern education system had its origins in the mid-19th century. Today, eight years of education is free and compulsory for all children between the ages of 6 and 13. The school system is administered by the national government under the minister of education. The national literacy rate of 96 percent is one of the highest in Latin America. Chile conducted intensive adult literacy campaigns in the 1980s and in the 1990s initiated programs designed for adult education. In 1996, 2.2 million students were enrolled in primary schools and 739,300 were enrolled in secondary schools. A preschool program is also conducted. Among the institutions of higher education, the University of Chile (1738), a state-operated university in Santiago, is highly respected throughout the world. Other centers of higher learning include the University of Concepción (1919), the Catholic University of Chile (1888), the Catholic University of Valparaíso (1928), and several technical universities. Total annual enrollment in institutions of higher education in 1997 was 380,603.

Nov. 06, 2002 Chile dam plan: Death of a culture? BY JIMMY LANGMAN
Special to The Herald RALCO-LEPOY, Chile To the indigenous Pehuenches, the Bio Bio River is sacred. If the river is not respected, then Mother Earth (nuke mapu, in their native language) will become angry, nearby volcanoes will erupt and the land will tremble with earthquakes. But to the Chilean government and Endesa, the energy company owned by the Spanish-controlled Enersis Group, the river is a profitable means toward meeting Chile's
energy needs and aiding regional economic growth. And now, despite the opposition of many Pehuenches, Endesa wants to dam the waterway to build a giant hydroelectric generating facility flooding much of the
indigenous group's ancestral lands in the process. It is a conflict that has been roiling for more than six years. The company has persuaded 84 Pehuenche families to accept land elsewhere in exchange for their property, but seven other families refuse to leave. In May, the Chilean Supreme Court refused to hear a case concerning government plans to expropriate those families' lands. This month, a so-called Hombres Buenos

No word better describes Latin American and Caribbean realities than "transformation," as the region grapples with questions of cultural identity, globalization, urbanization, and environmental degradation. While such issues are being addressed nationally and internationally, grassroots organizations and social movements have been most influential in expressing local desires and the struggle for self-determination. Increase your understanding of the issues facing the region by examining a specific culture and theme. Studying the conservation of the Canal Zone in Panama, gender roles in Jamaica, or the significance of indigenous movements in Ecuador challenges you to confront the complexity of community and regional development.

FOOD & WINE magazine has said "The choice eating event of the month is the Food of the Gods Festival in Oaxaca- offering Mexico's best cuisine"
And in the May, 2001 issue they point out that "Most Americans don't know Oaxaca. Food Cognoscenti kept it to themselves , but with new hotels and restaurants, it's ready for more visitors."
Zapotec Tours Food of The Gods
With 17 indigenous Indian groups from the Oaxacan valleys, mountains and coastal regions contributing to this robust cuisine, Oaxaca today offers a wide variety of eating pleasures - lifting what was basically peasant food to incredible heights of culinary sophistication. Oaxaca is really the place of choice to experience authentic pre-Hispanic flavors; flavors that were enhanced by the skills of early convent nuns and perfected by present-day chefs.
