Asian-Americans’ long history in U.S. military
By 1st Lt. Cristina Oxtra
27th Fighter Wing Public Affairs
CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (ACCNS) I can recall a conversation with a young man at a store some time ago. I had recently been commissioned in the Air Force. When I asked him if he worked in the local area, he said, “I work on base.” He was apparently an active-duty military member. When he asked me where I worked, I replied, “I work on base as well.” But before I could finish my response, he quipped, “Oh, so you work at the BX.”
There are many Asian-Americans who work in the civilian sector on base and provide a valuable service to military people and their families. Despite what some people might think, there are also many Asian-American citizens who dedicate their lives to the United States through military service.
Before I joined the military, I told a man in a business office that I was born in the Philippines and my family and I immigrated to America when I was 13. He was proud to say he was stationed in the Philippines when he was in the military and knew a great deal about the country.
Then he said, “You speak good English.”

Who We Are "Asian American" refers to persons whose familial roots originate from many countries, ethnic groups and cultures of the Asian continent, including (but not limited to): Asian Indian, Bangladeshi, Bhutanese, Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Malayan, Mien, Nepalese, Pakistani, Sikh, Sri Lankan, Thai and Vietnamese. According to US Census Data, the Asian American population consists of these percentages of ethnicities: 23.8% Chinese, 20.4% Filipino, 12.3% Japanese, 11.8% Asian Indian, 11.6% Korean and 8.9% Vietnamese. Seventy percent of US Asians are immigrants who entered the US during one of three distinct immigration waves: before 1975, between 1975-1979, and 1980 or later. Most Asian Americans who have arrived since 1965 still live in ten large metropolitan areas. In 1996, an estimated four in ten Asian Americans lived in California. These US Asian-born individuals emigrated from countries with the overall lowest breast cancer rates in the world.

Significance of Asians and Asian Americans in Idaho History
Gold discoveries in Idaho beginning in 1860 eventually attracted many Chinese, as miners or as providers of support services such as laundries, restaurants, and stores. In later years, many worked on the railroads, either in the initial construction or on later track maintenance. Still others were doctors, interpreters, hotel keepers, or gardeners. By 1870 Idaho Territory had some 4,000 Chinese residents, about 28.5% of the total population. People of Japanese ancestry began coming to Idaho by the 1890s. They worked mainly on the railroads and in agriculture, although some ran restaurants and laundries. Census records provide additional occupations for Idaho's Chinese and Japanese residents. Today, many traces of Idaho's Asian pioneers still remain. Documentary accounts, particularly mining records, deeds to property, and vital statistics; and city maps showing "China Town" or buildings labeled "Japanese;" archaeological remains, including mining ditches, dugout-type dwellings, and scattered Chinese artifacts; and cultural manifestations, particularly Chinese restaurants, place names such as "China Gardens," and gravestones in Chinese or Japanese, attest to their importance and influence. Present-day Asian Americans surnamed "Eng," "Fong," "Ikeda," and "Lee," some of whom are lineal descendants of Idaho's earliest Asian residents, remind us that Asian names were in the census records from 1870 on, along with the Staintons, Vollmers, and Weisgerbers. Such evidence heightens our awareness of the significant contributions made by Asian and Asian American people to both the economic development and the cultural heritage of Idaho for well over 100 years.

Studying Heart Disease in Chinese Americans with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
Heart attack is the leading cause of death in the United States. In China, the number of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases is about one fifth of that in the westernized countries, however. The reason for this dramatic difference is not clear but has been attributed to genetic and environmental factors. It is known, for example, that the traditional risk factors for heart disease such as smoking and aging seem to affect Chinese adults less than Caucasian adults. Because having diabetes increases the risk for developing heart disease, the growth of diabetes among the Chinese population may be an increasingly important risk factor for heart disease in the years ahead. The rate of diabetes is rising much faster in Asian Americans (10-15%) than in Caucasians (5%). For this reason, intensive efforts are now focused on investigating the effects of diabetes on the development of atherosclerotic heart disease. Abnormal blood vessel function is an early feature of heart disease. Strong evidence suggests that impaired blood vessel function is related to insulin resistance and in turn, insulin resistance is related to body fat. It has been shown that Asian Americans tend to have higher levels of insulin resistance than other ethnic groups. However, it is unclear whether having higher insulin resistance predisposes Chinese Americans to the development of heart disease. Therefore in our study, we are seeking to determine the relationship between these factors (blood vessel function, insulin resistance, and body fat) in Chinese American with diabetes.

Asian American Dreams A book review and interview Following a short introduction is an email interview with Helen Zia, author of the new book, "Asian American Dreams." What are Asian American dreams? When I first see the title of the book by Helen, the question comes to me. I have to think about this really hard, but it seems I don't have an answer for it. This is probably something we don't pay much attention to in our daily lives. Helen has done a great job in exploring this topic in her book from many aspects, such as the history of Asian American cultures and her personal experience as a journalist. The book is invaluable not only for Asian Americans, but also for all people who want to know and understand Asian Americans. Guide: You have a lot of discussions about races and cultures in your book. And we know one of the biggest challenges for American is how to handle problems among different races and cultures. This may become the most important issue as the population of minorities grows. What is your view about this and what is the best way to prevent any problems that may happen in the future?

The Growing Web of Suspicion of Asian Americans Senate Floor Speech June 21, 2001 Mrs. FEINSTEIN . Mr. President, I would like to take this opportunity to indicate my deep concern about what I perceive to be increasing bias in the United States toward Asian Americans and Chinese Americans in particular. In recent years, we have seen those on the far right and the far left of the political spectrum raise allegations without proof, distort facts, and make it impossible to refute insinuations. Thus, a web of suspicion is woven about the loyalties of Asian Americans to the United States. This has created an atmosphere of anti-Asian American and anti-Chinese American sentiment: a House Select Committee report on National Security (although widely debunked as without foundation); the botched Wen Ho Lee investigation; the recent incident with Representative DAVID WU; the attacks against U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao; hate crimes against Asian Americans; and the attacks against former California State Treasurer Matt Fong. These examplesand othershave contributed to a troubling and negative stereotyping of Asian -Americans.
