Beginning Library Research on ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES
Stanford University Libraries contain many titles on the historical and contemporary experience of Asian Americans, making it an excellent place for students conducting research in this area. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of Asian American, relevant titles are often dispersed throughout the general collection depending upon subject matter. Use Socrates , Stanford's online catalog to to locate books and other materials. Use the library's print or electronic indexes to locate journal and newspaper articles and published papers. Socrates can tell you what library materials Stanford owns and where they are located, allowing you to search by author, title, call number, organization, or subject. When searching Socrates , it helps to know the Library of Congress Subject Headings. One method of identifying the subject headings is to check the Library of Congress Subject Headings bound volumes. Another (online) method is to locate material you know is on your topic by doing an author (A) and/or title (T) search. Then look at the full display to see what

CNN's Don Knapp looks into the problems the alleged espionage is causing some Chinese Americans Windows Media May 27, 1999 Web posted at: 10:55 p.m. EDT (0255 GMT) LIVERMORE, California (CNN) Some Asian-Americans who work in the technology field fear a backlash in the wake of the congressional report alleging that China stole nuclear weapons secrets from U.S. laboratories. "There are some sensitive feelings," said Ray Ng , a scientist at the Sandia National Weapons Laboratory in Livermore, California. "We feel there is a cloud of suspicion over all Asians as a result of allegations over one individual." Wen Ho Lee, a Taiwanese-born scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, was investigated in relation to the allegations of China espionage. He was fired in March for alleged security violations, although he has not been charged with any crime.

var site="s12asiannation" ;var g_frames=true; Asians have been in the U.S. for a long time. Many families are already in their tenth generation here. The history of Asians in the U.S. is the history of dreams, hard work, prejudice, discrimination, persistence, and triumph.
MANILLA VILLAGE, USA
As presented in the excellent PBS documentary series Ancestors in the Americas , the first Asians to come to the western hemisphere were Chinese Filipinos who settled in Mexico. Eventually, Filipino sailors were the first to settle in the U.S. around 1750 in what would later be Louisiana. Later around 1840, to make up for the shortage of slaves from Africa, the British and Spanish brought over slaves or "coolies" from China, India, and the Philippines to islands in the Caribbean, Peru, Ecuador, and other countries in South America. However, the first large-scale immigration of Asians into the U.S. didn't happen until 1848. Around that time and as you may remember from your history classes, gold was discovered in America. Lured by tales and dreams of making it rich on "Gold Mountain" (which became the Chinese nickname for California), The Gold Rush was one of the

A MOVIE THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY?
The movie Pearl Harbor gets a warm reception from the public but a cool one from critics (May 2001). When the movie first came out and before I actually saw it, I initially reiterated the criticisms that many Asian American organizations had about it. These included that there were virtually no Japanese American or Asian American characters in the movie, despite the fact that at the time, one-third of Hawai'i's population was Asian American, including many who helped to fight the attackers and who helped care for injured. Most important, I was wary that it might lead to even more hostility and hatred toward the Japanese American community and by default (again based on the stereotype that all Asians are the same), all Asian Americans. Now, after finally seeing the movie and after the events of 9/11, I see the movie in a slightly different light. I still stand by those initial criticisms. However, I do not think that the portrayals of Japanese characters was as bad or harmful as I had feared. They could have been portrayed with a little more depth but overall, it could have been a lot worse.

The Asian American Journalists Association, a nonprofit educational organization based in San Francisco, is alarmed that the allegations of espionage at Los Alamos National Laboratory have sparked numerous press reports, editorials and cartoons that promote racist stereotypes.
If coverage does not improve, AAJA is concerned that these media accounts will do more harm to the Asian Pacific community than some of the poor coverage stemming from allegations of fundraising by Asian nationals during the 1996 presidential campaign.
AAJA is dismayed that some stories about the investigation of Wen Ho Lee, a scientist at Los Alamos, have unnecessarily referred to his race and ethnicity. Some media have also chosen to portray Chinese and Chinese Americans with a broad brush, using loaded words that are offensive and imply that these people are inscrutable and untrustworthy. Cartoons have also appeared that exaggerate and poke fun at physical appearances by depicting slanted eyes and buck teeth.
In one particularly offensive example, a recent editorial in the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper made fun of Asian accents, unnecessarily referred to the Fu Manchu character and tried to make a link between the allegations of stolen nuclear secrets and the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade.
