Overview
Key Programme Goals for Ireland
Programme Overview It is a training programme exclusively created for subject teachers to help them to discover how to turn the power of computer technology into teaching tools that will captivate students, motivate them, and ultimately move them towards greater learning. As part of this programme, over the next three years, Intel will invest $100 million to train more than 400,000 classroom teachers in 20 countries around the world, 6,000 of whom will be in Ireland. In Ireland, this initiative is being run in collaboration with the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE). "The scope of this programme represents the industry’s recognition that all the educational technology in classrooms today is worth nothing if teachers don’t know how to use it effectively. Computers aren’t magic, teachers are." The NCTE Schools IT 2000 was launched by the Department of Education and Science in November 1997. The National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) was established to manage the implementation of Schools IT 2000. Since 1998 the NCTE, under the Teaching Skills Initiative, has provided basic ICT skills training for teachers in Ireland.

In Elliot Masie's February 2002 report, "Virtual Classroom Technology Scan " there is note worthy trend that should focus our attention on application sharing in the virtual classroom. The study reports that the top three types of content or training delivered using a virtual classroom are: business technical processes and procedure (69%); business process training (67%); and information technology skills (67%). These statistics suggest that technical training using the virtual classroom accounts for a significant proportion of training in the live virtual classroom than professional development or sales training.
This finding is not surprising given the power of the live virtual classroom (LVC) for teach technical skills and knowledge. One of the best-kept secrets is the power of the LVC to share software applications. This feature is called application sharing or screen sharing

Preparing to Teach the
Large Lecture Course

[From Tools for Teaching by Barbara Gross Davis; Jossey-Bass Publishers: San Francisco, 1993.
This chapter may not be copied or reprinted without permission.] A sizable portion of the work involved in teaching a large lecture course takes place well before the first day of classes. For example, in a seminar you can make a spur-of-the-moment assignment, but in large classes you may need to distribute written guidelines. Similarly, in small classes students can easily turn in their homework during class. In large lectures you must decide how to distribute and collect papers without consuming precious class time. All these tasks take planning and organization. Many of the following suggestions for teaching large classes will also work for small classes: good teaching practices apply to classes of any type. General Strategies Become comfortable with the material. In an introductory survey course you may be covering topics outside your specialty area. Read up on those topics and try to anticipate questions that beginning students might ask. Review the course materials, assignments, and reading lists of colleagues who have taught the course before. Consider sitting in on courses taught by colleagues who are especially effective teachers of large classes to see what ideas and techniques work well, or ask them about their experiences teaching the course. Don't plan to lecture for a full period.

Diversity and Complexity in the Classroom:
Considerations of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender

[From Tools for Teaching by Barbara Gross Davis; Jossey-Bass Publishers: San Francisco, 1993.
This chapter may not be copied or reprinted without permission.] Since the 1960s and the rise of the civil rights movement, American colleges and universities have been engaged in an ongoing debate about how best to enroll, educate, and graduate students from groups historically underrepresented in higher education: women, African Americans, Chicanos and Latinos, Native Americans, American-born students of Asian ancestry, and immigrants. As enrollment statistics show, changes in both the demographics of the applicant pool and college admissions policies are bringing about a measure of greater diversity in entering classes (Levine and Associates, 1990). There are no universal solutions or specific rules for responding to ethnic, gender, and cultural diversity in the classroom, and research on best practices is limited (Solomon, 1991). Indeed, the topic is complicated, confusing, and dynamic, and for some faculty it is fraught with uneasiness, difficulty, and discomfort. Perhaps the overriding principle is to be thoughtful and sensitive and do what you think is best. The material in this section is intended to help you increase your awareness of matters that some faculty and students have indicated are particularly sensitive for women and students of color. Some of these problems affect all students, but they may be exacerbated by ethnic and gender differences between faculty members and their students.

Microsoft Gives Teachers New Skills and Tools for Using Technology in the Classroom REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 24, 1999 Gail Schalk recalls the not-too-distant past, when she couldn't imagine using computers with her fourth- and fifth- grade students at Seattle's Montlake Elementary School. "I knew it was important for my students to have computer skills, but I didn't like the idea of using technology for technology's sake and I wasn't adept at using computers at the sophisticated level I knew they should be used." Schalk is not alone. According to Denver-based Quality Education Data, 99 percent of all U.S. public schools are equipped with computers and 89 percent have access to the Internet. But while the resources are there, teachers don't always have the skills and training they need to use technology in their classrooms. In fact, a recent U.S. Department of Education study reports that four out of five teachers don't feel prepared to use technology as part of daily classroom instruction. Through programs like the Classroom Teacher Network, Microsoft gives educators the tools and training they need to use technology effectively.

Yet, a recent Department of Education study found that only one in five teachers in the United States feels prepared to teach using technology in the classroom. All the technology in the world won’t make a difference in student achievement without well-trained teachers who know how to use it effectively. That’s why Microsoft, in partnership with the Intel Corp. and other leading technology companies, joined together recently to create a worldwide industry initiative the Intel Teach to the Future program — to train more than 400,000 teachers over the next three years how to use technology to improve teaching and learning.

Proposal Submitted to the Office of Learning Technology:
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
With the recent increase in the popularity of Web based instruction and computer accessed information in general, it is becoming increasingly important for the electronic community to become aware of the barriers people with disabilities face in these virtual environments. As technologies emerge to deliver Web based instruction, it is also important to educate both courseware developers and educators of solutions they can apply to insure that persons with disabilities are not excluded from participating in this new and quickly developing form of education. The objectives of this study are to: 1) investigate barriers faced by individuals in Web based learning environments, 2) educate the general public and governing bodies of accessibility issues associated with Web based instruction, 3) make recommendations to courseware developers on methods to increase their products support of accessible design, 4) to provide guidelines for course designers and instructors to ensure the accessibility of their curriculum materials. The partners of this project are experts in the field of disability, education, assistive technology, and Web based instruction. Partners include the Adaptive Technology Resource Centre (ATRC), The Centre for Academic Technology (CAT), and the Special Needs Opportunity Windows Project (SNOW), each affiliated with the University of Toronto. Partners also include the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO), and Bruce Landon, educator and researcher in the field of distance education and Web based delivered instruction.
