the health, education and welfare of the people od Ireland. " Throughout the year the College provides over 200 courses for students from home and abroad on subjects ranging from Home Economics and Crafts to Literature and Music. Needless to remark, any attempt to encourage the development or improvement of domestic, educational and recreational activities could not materialise without the support and goodwill of the Department of Education, County Louth Vocational Education Committee and many State and Semi-State organisations. The status of the College is further enhanced by the generous sponsorship received from the agricultural, business and commercial sector enabling adult students to avail of scholarships for sponsored courses. Ireland's first residential Adult Education College has attempted to widen the horizons of thousands of visitors and, hopefully, will continue to make a contribution to the nation socially, culturally and educationally. Food
Food is served on the main site in the Dining Hall, a large building which dates from the nineteenth century. During term-time, the College kitchen provides lunch, which includes a vegetarian and salad bar; and dinner seven nights a week. Vegetarian and vegan options are always available. Most meals are self-service but on special occasions, such as College Guest Nights, meals are served at the tables. In addition, the Junior Common Room runs its own cafeteria, and a number of kitchenettes are provided on the College main site as well as in the new buildings.
The Library
The Chapel
By Statute, the Chapel follows the services of the Anglican Church but in practice it is a centre of worship for all denominations. The main service is on Sundays at 5.45 p.m. at which recent preachers have included Libby Purves, Sir Edward Heath and the Senior Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, Lord Bingham of Cornhill . This service of eucharist or evensong is supported by a lively choir, composed of students from Balliol and the wider community. The Organ Scholar (who is an undergraduate) conducts the choir and plays at the services. The Chapel is directed by the Chaplain, who in addition to his religious functions plays a major role in the pastoral care and welfare of all members of the College, regardless of their religious beliefs. All religious faiths are active in Oxford (including a mosque and synagogue) and members of Balliol participate in them.
