http://www.CollegeScoop.com
"But I don't know where to start" Printer-friendly version That's what I hear most often. So here's the scoop.
Think in terms of four basic steps. Step 1
Do you want to go to college? Why? What for? You may never have stopped to think about this, but it's important. It's your life and your college education, so to increase your motivation and your chances for success, you have to begin by being able to provide an answer to these questions. (If you need some ideas to stimulate your thinking, check out the list in "Start Here."
If the answer is "No," OK. But then begin to think about what else you will want to do when you graduate from high school. You have to make some plans, identify some goals.
If the answer is "I'm not sure" or "I don't know," then proceed as if the answer is "Yes" because you don't want to close any doors at this point. Keep your options open.
If the answer is "Yes," then you're at the right place. Let's get started.

Financial aid applications at Johnson State College are reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis upon receipt of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must be admitted to a degree or certificate program at Johnson before your financial aid application will be considered. Application Process It is extremely important that you submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after January 1, 2003, as possible for the following financial aid programs since the funding for these programs is limited: Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Work-Study and some state grants. Prospective Students Financial Aid Applying for Student Loans Applying for Student Loans Welcome to the Federal Family Education Loan Web Site. Any Peninsula College student wishing to apply for a loan must have a completed financial aid file. Once you have completed your financial aid file for the current academic year, you should be in a position to plan your finances. While we hope that students are eligible for other types of assistance, the reality is that some students will need to borrow in order to finance their education.
If you have already completed the preliminary form and turned it into the Financial Aid office, you are ready to use the web site that completes the loan process. The next section discusses this site and the process of borrowing a Stafford loan in general.
APPLYING FOR A LOAN
The process for borrowing a Stafford loan has changed from prior years. Beginning Fall quarter 2000, you need to complete and sign the new Master Promissory Note (MPN). Even if you received prior loans at another college and have completed an MPN, you will need to complete a new application, since Peninsula College is a two-year college and not eligible to renew the MPN.
Once you have completed your portion of the MPN, follow the instructions in your loan packet.

Applying Online Our Advice If you are applying to more than three schools, don't like using the typewriter, and want to save money, hassle, and time, consider applying online! Give it a try by filling one out, just with information off the top of your head, without sending it. You'll see how fast, easy, and unintimidating it is. Many colleges, especially private ones, use the Common Application This allows you to fill out one application form and submit it to several colleges. While some computers in the school have the CommonApplication on them, you can also access it online at: Common Application There are several sites from which you can access hundreds of online applications. Applyweb.com The Princeton Review , and Peterson's are three that we recommend. These sites will give you a free account on which you can store applications you've started but have not yet finished, so you can work on them over several days before sending them. These sites will require you to input basic information such as name, address, parent's names, and so on only once. After that it will be automatically input to all applications you fill out. Finally, most schools offer online applications at their web sites.
