http://www.centre.edu/web/news/abroad02.html
Students not deterred from studying abroad a year after 9-11 RELEASED: Sept. 5, 2002
In spite of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on America, Centre College students remain determined to take advantage of the College's international educational opportunities. More Centre students will study abroad this academic year than last.
"My mother was initially concerned, but this is such an exciting opportunity for me that I won't be deterred," said Amy Sibley, a junior from Paducah who will study in London during the spring term. It will be the first time she has traveled outside the United States.
"I think studying abroad is an important part of a liberal arts education and I plan to travel throughout my life," Sibley said.
Kim Bauser, a sophomore from Kettering, Ohio, agreed.
"If we're just going to hole up in the United States, the terrorists have defeated us," she said.
Bauser will study this spring at Centre's program in Strasbourg, France.
"Becoming more aware of other countries and being more globally-minded is important," she said. "I'll be staying with a host family in order to learn more about French culture and lifestyle."
In light of last year's developments, Centre has put in place some new security measures for its students overseas.

Introduction
It has been my experience over the years as a Consultant to the US Peace Corps that the issue of sexual harassment for women can become a major stress factor that can greatly affect the entire overseas experience. The information included in these pages comes directly from the work I have done with hundreds of inspiring and courageous Peace Corps Volunteer females as well as my own personal experience as a 22 year old Peace Corps Volunteer in Brasil many years ago. I have listened to and experienced the struggles, fears, frustrations, dilemmas, as well as joys of being a female in a developing culture. I have learned a great deal from the experience and from the incredible women with whom I have had the privilege of counseling. My life and my clinical work have been immeasurably enriched by the experiences we have shared together. Cultural Sensitivity We all want to be culturally sensitive, to get along, to be respectful, to fit in, to not offend. In training, cultural sensitivity is emphasized and highly valued. It can be the doorway through which a college student studying abroad gains entry to and acceptance with the community abroad.

They now walked on in silence; each of them deep in thought. Elizabeth was not comfortable; that was impossible; but she was flattered and pleased. . . . He then asked her to walk into the housebut she declared herself not tired, and they stood together on the lawn. At such a time, much might have been said, and silence was very awkward. She wanted to talk, but there seemed an embargo on every subject. At last she recollected that she had been travelling . . . Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice Over the years many Smith English majors have spent all or part of their junior years (occasionally, part of their senior years) abroad. Most, predictably, have attended universities in England, Scotland, or Ireland, but some have chosen Smith's own programs in Paris, Hamburg, Florence, or Geneva, and a few hardy travelers have ventured as far as Australia. Coming back to Northampton, our English majors have almost invariably reported favorably on their experiencesand they have been able to apply credits earned abroad to the English Department requirements with relative ease (see below). How do you choose where to go? Smith's list of approved institutions currently lists twenty-two in England, six in Scotland, one in Wales, four in the Republic of Ireland, one in Northern Ireland, eight in Australia, and one in New Zealand. Even if we disregard a few of these as being unlikely destinations for English majors (the London School of Economics, the Laban Dance Centre), there are still many possibilities. At present, the English Department publishes no officially recommended list of its ownthough perhaps in the fullness of time it will; we are interested in making sure that our majors have the best possible educational experiences abroad, and we hope to begin evaluating (in a modest way) the various universities' programs.

For pre-departure and information sessions this fall, see sessions Every year, Smith students study in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and English-speaking countries in both hemispheres. Smith runs year-long programs in Florence, Geneva, Hamburg, and Paris Close to 50 percent of the student body studies abroad before graduation—some students for one semester, but most for a full academic year. International study is such a vital and integral part of Smith's liberal arts curriculum that it is included in the Smith College comprehensive fee—students studying in Northampton and students studying abroad generally pay the same tuition and fees and receive the same need-based financial aid. The Office for International Study is dedicated to encouraging students to connect their education at Smith to the wider world. We invite you to explore the opportunities open to you!

Fifty-Five Augustana Students Studying Abroad
SIOUX FALLS - Fifty-five students from Augustana College will be studying in foreign countries during the January 2003 Interim period. In addition, six faculty members from Augustana will be teaching courses abroad. All are participants in the Upper Midwest Association for Intercultural Education (UMAIE), a consortium of nine colleges offering intercultural courses during the January Interim. UMAIE was founded in the fall of 1963 when several colleges adopted the 4-1-4 academic calendar. The UMAIE pioneers recognized they could expand the international curricula, control costs, and increase participation in study abroad if several campuses cooperated in offering courses overseas. In addition to Augustana, participating schools are Augsburg College, Minneapolis, Minn.; Bethel College, St. Paul, Minn.; Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Ill.; Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn.; Hamline University, St. Paul, Minn.; Luther College, Decorah, Iowa; College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minn., and the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn.
