The Culture of Fear
Noam Chomsky This essay is the introduction to Colombia: The Genocidal Democracy, a 125-page book by Javier Giraldo S.J., written in 1996. Two facts should be uppermost in the minds of North American readers of Father Giraldo's documentation of the reign of terror that engulfed Colombia during the "Dirty War" waged by the state security forces and their paramilitary associates from the early 1980s. The first is that Colombia's "democra-tatorship," as Eduardo Galeano termed this amalgam of democratic forms and totalitarian terror, has managed to compile the worst human rights record in the hemisphere in recent years, no small achievement when one considers the competition. The second is that Colombia has had accessories in crime, primary among them the government of the United States, though Britain, Israel, Germany, and others have also helped to train and arm the assassins and torturers of the narco-military-landowner network that maintains "stability" in a country that is rich in promise, and a nightmare for many of its people. In July 1989, the U.S. State Department announced plans for subsidized sales of military equipment to Colombia, allegedly "for antinarcotics purposes." The sales were "justified" by the fact that "Colombia has a democratic form of government and does not exhibit a consistent pattern of gross violations of internationally recognized human rights."

(16 days / 15 nights)
The whole idea of the tour is very simple: understand that, beyond the different specific configurations of the Wiracocha god which can be found in different places and periods, there is a fundamental unity in the Andean civilization and the cost of Peru
This unity has its origin in Chavin (department of Ancash, in the mountains range located in the centre - north of Peru), 3000 B.C. and it is expressed with notable regularity, in time and space, through different representations of the Wiracocha Pachacamac, with its typical attribute: feline teeth and hair made of snakes, symbols of power, the owner of life, death and eternal social order.
Then, we will visit chronologicaly for 15 days, more than 4000 years of history and pre-history of Peru from the roots of Chavin of Huantar to the summit of the Inca empire, Machu Picchu, the last historical sign of the Anden precolombian civilization.
Click on the links to open a new window where you can find a description and pictures of the different places.
The Tour
After your arrival in Lima if there is enough time we will visit the the archaeological museum in Pueblo Libre to have an idea of what you will see during the tour before commencing the trip (day one)
We will start our journey in the evening going by bus towards the department of Ancash to meet the matrix culture of the central mountains of Peru, known as the

Pre-Colombian Goldwork Courtesy of: Museo Del Oro / Bogota, Colombia Colombia , one of Latin Americas riches countries in natural resources is located in the northwest of South America. Washed by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and by the Pacific to the west, like a spinal column, the chain of the Andes Mountains stretches up from the south of the continent forming three fertile branches with countless valleys, plateaus and hillsides inhabited by the majority of the present-day population. The total land area is 1,141,748 sq km (440,831 sq mi). Colombia's varied topography also includes torrid lowlands; selvas (rain forests); and vast plains, or llanos. The principal river, the Magdalena, flows north across practically the entire country. Wildlife includes the larger South American mammals such as jaguars, pumas, and tapirs and monkeys, red deer, snakes, and birds. Colombia lies almost entirely in the Torrid Zone, between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The climate, however, varies with the elevation, with cooler temperatures at higher altitudes. In ancient times this land was occupied by societies governed by chiefs. Gold, the sacred metal, adorned the political leaders and was used as offerings to the gods. In the southwest of Colombia, the cultures which archaeologists call Tumaco, Calima, Malagana, Cauca, San Agustín, Tierradentro, Nariño, Quimbaya and Tolima, were the first to work the metal they found in the rivers.

Colombian tv
Football, girls, violence and more girls.
Colombian TV is amazon - if you visit the country be sure to pick some up. It starts in the afternoon with the commercials (check out those beer commercials!), but only truly kicks in when the news start. By the way, another remarkable thing about Colombian television is the amount of violence and sensation. The news will get you your daily dose of kidnappings, violence and stuff like that, (on some channels violence is now only shown in black and white) and after that there follows a girls section. Then it's the sports and the commercials (a beer commercial, say), which are also about naked girls but better done. The misses of 99. Now that I'm writing this down: does this all sound a bit macho? And it goes on like that. It seems Colombian tv is an exagaration of Colombian values: girls need to be pretty and intelligent by answering questions by men twice (or three times!) their age

Culture
Colombia is an ethnic mosaic, reflected in its culture, folklore, arts and crafts. The different roots and traditions of the Indians, Spanish and Africans have produced interesting fusions, particularly in crafts, sculpture and music. Pre-Columbian art consists primarily of stone sculpture, pottery and goldwork. Indian basketware, weaving and pottery date back to pre-Columbian times but now fuse modern techniques with traditional designs. Colombian music incorporates both the African rhythms of the Caribbean, Cuban salsa and heavily Spanish-influenced Andean music. Colombia's literary giant is Gabriel García Márquez, whose works mix myths, dreams and reality in a style critics have dubbed 'magic realism'. García Márquez insists his work is documentary, which says a lot about the nature, rhythm and perception of life in Colombia. The best of Colombia's exciting new writers is Moreno Durán, who has been burdened with the reputation of being the best Latin American novelist to emerge since the regional upsurge in literary talent in the 1950s. Spanish is Colombia's official language and, except for some remote Indian tribes, all Colombians speak it. There are also about 75 Indian languages still used in the country. While the education system includes English in its curriculum, it remains little known and rarely spoken.
