Colombia
Economy
Colombia ended 1998 in recession with 0.2% GDP growth due to a combination of low world oil prices, reduced export demand, guerrilla violence, and diminished investment flows. The Central Bank resorted to interest rate hikes and tight monetary policy to defend the peso against pressure from Colombia's worsening trade and fiscal deficits. President PASTRANA'S well-respected financial team is working to deal with the myriad economic problems the country faces, including the highest unemployment level in decades and a fiscal deficit of close to 5% of GDP in 1998. The government implemented austerity measures, declared emergency measures to guard against a potential banking crisis resulting from the country's economic slowdown, and is seeking international assistance to fund a peace plan with the guerrillas. Guerrilla violence and low world oil prices will likely continue to undermine the economy in 1999. GDP: agriculture: industry: services: Population below poverty line: 17.7% (1992 est.)

Marbles, Count the Stars, American Hi-Fi Concert Reviews: Street Beat: unsigned bands Feature: Soft Porn Central TRUE! Cartoons Colombia's Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC), the left-wing guerrillas who supply protection for the drug lords in exchange for weapons and funding, greeted Clinton by blowing up three banks in Cali and a stretch of coastal highway the day before he arrived. They were also heard scoffing, "yeah, right … no shooting," as they overran a government communications complex the next day killing the base commander and 15 soldiers. In an effort to coax the militarily superior Marxists into peace talks, last year the Colombian government ceded 40-percent of the country to FARC control. This mountainous stretch of jungle and coca plantations in southern Colombia is now unofficially known as "Farclandia" and, besides being the "kidnapping capital of the world," it is the source of 80-percent of the cocaine that concludes its infamous existence by being metabolized in the blood streams of America. Though Clinton's geography is sharper than the crease in his Armani, his sense of history is as dull as bingo night at the VFW. It appears that he is entirely oblivious to the fact that America is now charging into the same type of geo-political quagmire that turned a few "advisors" and a hundred Sikorsky helicopters in Vietnam into the most embarrassing fiasco of the American Century.

Way Of Life Series, The: The Colombian Way Of Life (1991) Description: Teenagers Mauricio and Paula lead a tour of Bogotá, Colombia, showing that there's much more to this modern, South American city than coffee, cocaine, and guerrilla violence. After a discussion of Bogotá's geography, climate, and rapidly growing population food, economics, recreation, and education are discussed. A tour of the Ciudad Kennedy, a low-income housing area built with U.S. assistance, provides a framework for a discussion of U.S./Colombian relations. An engaging media complement for World History and World Geography units on the major developments of civilizations in Andean South America; effects of physical and human geographic patterns and processes on events in the past and influence on current conditions, including the influence of physical features and environmental conditions on migration patterns; the character of a region as influenced by its political, economic, social and cultural characteristics.

http://www.geog.gla.ac.uk/~uoslender/thesis.htm
“Black Communities on the Colombian Pacific Coast and the ‘Aquatic Space’: A Spatial Approach to Social Movement Theory” By Ulrich Oslender Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) to the University of Glasgow, Faculty of Social Science, Department of Geography and Topographic Science July 2001 Abstract Spatial insights into the workings of social movements have received little attention in established social movement theory so far. Emphasis is usually placed on the temporal dimensions of social change, and most accounts of social movements examine only briefly the particular worldly place out of which a given movement emerges, before the more ‘serious’ analysis focuses on the movement structures and how it is inscribed in the wider global changes of history. This thesis argues that an approach to social movements via their specific geographies or, more analytically, their spatialities provides a deeper understanding of both a movement’s particularity ‘on the ground’, and the ways in which social movement agency is articulated across different scales from the local to the global. Through a genealogy of spatial theorising it is shown how ‘space’ and ‘place’ matter in social movement theory and research. A place perspective is then offered on the social movement of black communities on Colombia’s Pacific coast that has mobilised in the wake of the new Constitution of 1991 in the form of ethnic-territorial organisations that defend their rights to cultural difference as intrinsically linked to territorial control. Focusing less on the social movement structures

To Guide Entry
I. Exposition
After having written a unit on Greek and Roman mythology, I decided that research on Mesoamerican myths would be most interesting. To my excitement, I have found these two mythologies to be both very similar, but yet quite different. Myths have an intrinsic lure and they have successfully inspired and motivated students. Myths are cultural products created by real people. They were created by following certain cultural axioms. Myths have entered the public domain and are now social properties that still influence our existence today. This unit proposes to expose the teachers as well as the students to the Mesoamerican Indian culture. By so doing, it will enhance the interests of both while augmenting respect and admiration of the cultures. This curriculum can be used in an ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) class, or it can be used to teach Mexican culture in a Spanish course. Since it would be very difficult to exclude the art of the Mesoamerican Indian when describing their culture, explanations on culture will be done through this medium. Thus, this unit could possibly be used in an art class also. Juxtaposed are two sets of myths that have been adapted for skits or role playing. Experience and research have shown that students retain more when involved with this process. In following this procedure, students should be encouraged to research other myths, and then they should be instructed in the dynamics of adapting narratives to dialogue.

III Oil Development at the Local Scale
Question: how are the costs and benefits of the oil industry distributed in oil producing countries?
  • Burma: Unocal, Total and the Karen Nation
Take two things from this lecture:
  • An understanding of the political-economy of oil: how our addiction to oil dictates our foreign policy.
  • An understanding of the human and environmental cost of our energy policy.
Ask the following questions:
  • Given the costs (political, social, and environmental) of oil dependence, do we need to rethink our energy policy?
  • How is the "national energy security debate" constructed? In other words, who shapes our thoughts about "energy security" and who sets the parameters for what choices we have?
Oil as a Pivotal Factor in WWI
  • Britain shifted its navy from coal power to oil power in the two years prior to WWI.

    • to explore certain frameworks for thinking about the institutional foundations of sustainability to look in more detail at different types of institutional actor involved in processes of development and to consider how best to think about these actors in both theoretical and empirical terms
The first part of the seminar considers a number of frameworks for thinking about institutions and organizations, focusing in particular on the very fervent (some might say virulent) debates around the concept of social capital. Whether we end up loving or hating the concept I think these debates can be fruitful in helping us decide how we think about notions of political economy, human agency and civil society (all core themes in thinking about development). With this in mind we will then go on to consider more specific ways of thinking about the development roles of the state, business, international and national NGOs, social movements and the World Bank. In all of these instances, some of the cases we will discuss will refer to the environmental dimensions of development, while others will refer more to questions of poverty, livelihood and empowerment. Reflecting my background there will, I am afraid, be some bias to rural issues and to Latin America.

If you are lost, don't ask a young person for directions - that is the message coming out of an international survey of 18-24 year olds conducted by America's National Geographic Society. More than 3,000 young adults in nine countries were tested on their geographical knowledge - with some alarming results. Countries tested Sweden Germany Italy France Japan Britain United States Canada Mexico Despite a deluge of news about the prospect of a war against Saddam Hussein, only 13% of Americans tested could point Iraq out on a map of the world. Perhaps even more worrying - when confronted with the same map, only 89% of Americans could find their own country! The surveyors asked the youngsters to answer 56 questions on geographic knowledge and current events.
