Woodson Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as " Black History Month Blacks Absent from History Books We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson Established Journal of Negro History Woodson, always one to act on his ambitions, decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. English 211 is an exploration of the first half of the American literary tradition. This course will examine the Puritans, the Transcendentalists, and the writers of the period sometimes called the "American Renaissance." Authors to be studied include Mather, Edwards, Bradstreet, Franklin, Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Melville, Douglass, Jacobs, Longfellow, and Whitman. Students are expected to have a reasonable acquaintance with American history. Objectives: To give the student familiarity with the vocabulary of literary criticism, an overview of American literary history—including its relationship to political and social history—and an acquaintance with several major American writers. Assignments: dailly quizzes, regular postings to online discussions, three papers, and a final examination.

For more ideas on Colonial America and children's literature check out our book In Times Past For our theme this time we have chosen Colonial America. It is often a part of the curriculum, integrates well with literature, and can be approached in an inventive manner. We have listed below some possible discussions, activities and works of literary merit. All of which are intended to be offered as choices to the learner rather than as assignments or lists of things to do. Keep in mind the focus should be on the enjoyment of good books and the excitement of new discoveries.

Introduction Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be born in another time? Or as another person? Our class is going to journey back in time to Colonial Times. Each of you will become either a man, a woman, or a child from colonial times. You will pretend to live in this time period and bring your character to life.
The Task You are to become an authentic character from Colonial Times. Your writing, research, and performance will be from the viewpoint of the colonial character you choose to be. You can be a slave, a founding father, a student, a merchant or one of the many other characters listed in the chart below. You are to write about your life as that person. In addition, you are to include an authentic document that was written during that period. You will create a tri-fold brochure using the program Microsoft Publisher The Student Writing Center can also be used).
The Process Pick a character from the table below. Use the Internet resources listed below to gather information about this character. Look at the information that is needed for your brochure. Once the information is gathered you will publish it. Use the format below as your guide.
