Columbus Day
Christopher Columbus left Italy on August 13, 1492, to find a new path to the West Indies. Although the debate rages on about whether or not Christopher Columbus really "discovered" America, one thing is for sure, he was a brave sailor. In a time when most people believed the world was flat, Columbus set sail to find far away places. Some say time to teach atrocities of Columbus
By CARMEL PEREZ SNYDER

Globe-News Staff Writer In elementary school, children learn about Christopher Columbus, the founder of the New World. They learn about his ships, his adventures and his discoveries. But more than 500 years after Columbus landed on a Caribbean island's shore, some Americans want students to learn more the man. "Historically he is an important person," said Jen Shunatona Cale, a member of Amarillo's Native American community. "But culturally, it's different. He saw the openness of the people he `discovered' and took advantage of their generosity and benevolence." Cale said children should be taught about the price Native Americans paid for European exploration and settlement. Since the 500th anniversary of Columbus' journey in 1992, more multi-cultural groups, including historians and educators, have campaigned to reform American history and do away with Columbus Day, which is celebrated today. "As we prepare to enter a new millennium, it's time to say goodbye to Columbus," said Phillip Martin, on the Web site of Rethinking School: Resources for Equity and Justice.

A Reason to Celebrate?
Letter to the Editor dated October 12, 1997
(reprinted with permission) How history is taught to our children is directly linked to how we view America's past and present. We must seriously rethink and question how Columbus' landfall in 1492 should or should not be commemorated. Textbooks do not accurately reflect the governorship of Columbus and his two brothers over what are now Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Some historians would have us turn our faces from the greed, terror and cruelty that resulted in the annihilation of between one quarter and one half million Indigenous Peoples in Hispanola. That is the record. They were not converted to Christianity, as some would have us believe. They were wiped out. We must not embrace and celebrate a myth that underwrites the superiority of one race over another. The kind of thinking that ignores the record and overlooks the decimation of entire populations in the name of religion is dangerous at the very least. We cannot turn our faces from the fact the United States is a nation on stolen land and has become wealthy despoiling resources and an environment that belongs to the Indigenous Peoples. The legacy of violence, thievery, degradation and murder which began more than 500 years ago pursues us into this century and is seen in the decay of society around us. The assaults against Indigenous Americans continue in 1997. United States Sen. Slade Gorton's blatant attacks against the Indigenous Peoples of America, the continuing war of the state of Alaska against the Human Rights and Sovereignty of it's Indigenous Peoples, and the onslaughts directed against the Tribal members of the Lakota Nations of the states of South and North Dakota.

Peacework has been published monthly since 1972, intended to serve as a source of dependable information to those who strive for peace and justice and are committed to furthering the nonviolent social change necessary to achieve them. Rooted in Quaker values and informed by AFSC experience and initiatives, Peacework offers a forum for organizers, fostering coalition-building and teaching the methods and strategies that work in the global and local community. Peacework seeks to serve as an incubator for social transformation, introducing a younger generation to a deeper analysis of problems and issues, reminding and re-inspiring long-term activists, encouraging the generations to listen to each other, and creating space for the voices of the disenfranchised. Views expressed are those of the authors, not necessarily of the AFSC.

AFSC Colorado Statement on Columbus Day
The Italian and Italian-American communities have suffered discrimination and many hardships and have many true heroes and role models worthy of respect. There are many noble grounds upon which to base a celebration of Italian culture without glorifying Columbus, the man who led the invasion of the continents now known as North and South America. This European invasion was expressed through raping, pillaging and murdering, and resulted in on-going oppression, economic exploitation, and basic lack of respect for human life. Indigenous Peoples inhabited the continents now known as North and South America for thousands of years before the voyages of Christopher Columbus, and, therefore, he could not have "discovered America." He merely incorporated it into the European world-view. The invasion led by Christopher Columbus completely annihilated the Taino people. The principal methods of this annihilation were "outrageous torture," rape, and murder, documented by Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas. The introduction of previously unknown, foreign diseases such as syphilis and small pox killed the remainder of the existing population. These actions, condoned and committed by Christopher Columbus and his subordinates, led to an accepted and systematic genocide of indigenous peoples. This legacy stills manifests itself in the laws, acts and manners of local, national and global political and economic institutions and their leaders.

One grew up in north Denver when it was still dominated by the close-knit Italian community, and only wandered as far as the Italian enclaves in Arvada and Wheat Ridge. The other spent his time in Kansas City's Little Italy, having his scrapes with the law before going off to do refugee work in Central America and settling in Denver as a counselor to troubled youth - and more scrapes with the law. George Vendegnia, a barber and businessman for 25 years, organized a new lodge of the Sons of Italy a few years ago specifically to resurrect the parade and evoke some of the old days in north Denver when the streets were filled with Italian families and local business.Denver transplant Carl Michael "C.M." Mangiaracina has gone from Kansas City to Managua, Nicaragua, San Salvador, El Salvador, and California before returning to Colorado, where he had done post-graduate work in Greeley in the early 1970s.

25 Sep 2001 Help your English language learners understand the role that Columbus played in American history with this thematic unit for Columbus Day. Over the past few years Columbus' place in the history of the United States has been disputed. Regarded a hero by the European conquerors of the 15th Century, Columbus was not a hero to the Native Americans already living in the New World. Despite the politics of the situation, Columbus' feat was a major event in the history of the world. I like to teach a short unit about Columbus to my English language learners so that they understand what they see and hear around them on Columbus Day.
