by Matt Carter Classes will go on the back burner at SF State today for students and faculty members who choose to participate in Indigenous People's Day teach-ins on the hiring and admissions practices knownas affirmative action. The events will begin on the main lawn at dawn this morning, witha sunrise ceremony conducted by the Student Kouncil of IntertribalNations. With a noontime visit from the Rev. Jesse Jackson andnearly a dozen other events scheduled, memories of this year'sIndigenous People's Day may shine on longer than those of past Oct.12ths otherwise known as Columbus Day. Earlier in the week, some instructors contacted by the Gater werenot aware of the teach-in. Others had canceled today's classes inadvance, but some were locked into scheduled mid-term examinations. "I would certainly like to allow students who wish to attend (theteach-in) to attend. I would not make it mandatory," said blackstudies lecturer Joanne Gearing. Whatever impact the teach-ins have, many students already hadstrong feelings about the role affirmative action policies play inboth the workplace and in universities.

Since 1920 the day has been celebrated annually. The history of Columbus, first landing in the New World on October 12, will be retold in many social studies classes in October The following is a brief account of its history. On August 3, 1492 Columbus and 90 men set sail to find an easier route to Asia for the spice merchants. The expedition was sponsored by Queen Isabella of Spain, provided that Columbus would conquer some of the islands and mainland for Spain. On October 12 the ships landed on the island of Guanahani (in the Caribbean Islands) which Columbus immediately christened San Salvador and claimed it for Spain. When they landed on what is now Cuba they thought it was Japan!

    I STARTED CARVING...
... in 1997 after meeting a local Woodcarver named John and then attending his class at a local High School in February of that year. The class was such a big hit everyone wanted to continue carving together so we formed a local Carving Club the "Connecticut Classic Carvers" which meets twice a week in North Haven, CT. I even arranged to have Pete LeClair of the CCA (Caricature Carvers of America) come teach a class in our first year. I had been lucky enough to have Pete as an instructor at my first carving seminar; the "1997 Carve Along" in upstate New York. The Carve Alongs are held Labor Day Weekend and are hosted by the "Mid Hudson Valley Woodcarvers" , a WONDERFUL group of people. The format is great; Three CCA members come and teach so each student carves one day with each instructor. You really learn a lot and the people you meet are the best. I don't know where I found the nerve to go since I had only been carving a few months and didn't know anyone, but I have gone back every year since. Another GREAT Carving weekend is the "New England Wood Carver's Retreat" put together by the "Mystic Carvers" of Mystic, CT each

Celebrating Dr. King's birthday has become such a staple on the holiday calendar that most people barely even acknowledge its existence. Billy O'Keefe Viewpoints Editor When I remembered only a week prior that I wouldn't have to hop a train to school this Monday, I sobbed with tears of joy; after all, receiving a day off in college without cutting class is about as rare as finding nutrition at McDonald's. As my graphic arts teacher reminded the class of this rarest of occasions, my fellow students and I joined hands, sang and threw our supplies out the window, accidentally killing two pigeons and a snowman in the effort. Actually, believe it or not, this didn't really happen. While I admit I relish a Monday night without xerox machines, color separations and anything Pantone, I've always been confused by the practice of taking the day off, at least in cases like this. I'll explain. In case you had a long fall down the stairs and don't remember anything, this past Monday was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a date reserved for Americans black, white, both or neither to take time off and reflect on Dr. King's revolutionary achievements.

Kathleen - Well, with Columbus Day approaching it seems an interesting topic to consider how we teach about Columbus, what really happened, how it happened and what impact it had upon people on both sides of the ocean. So just jump right in!
Kathleen - Those of us who are over hmmmm 35, learned a rather slanted story about Columbus, no?
Mtn ette/4/WV - Hi everybody!!! Saw a great Columbus Day thing on the chatboard that I copied Gumbo/K/La - RATHER slanted, indeed, Kathleen!!!! :-) Kathleen - Valerie's idea was to use a child's backpack as the claimed territory...seizing it and calling it ours. eliciting reactions and appraisals and opinions. - What literature is accurate about Columbus? Kathy/5/IA - Yes, Kathleen! The older I got, the more I couldn't understand the reason we even had Columbus Day.
