Comets and meteors defined
Celestial bodies consisting of a central frozen mass, frozen gas and dust that loop around the sun in long, elliptical orbits are known as comets. When comets approach the sun they begin to glow as they warm up releasing gas and dust that form long tails behind them. These tails can stretch for millions of miles and are know to point away from the sun no matter what direction the comet is moving. The most famous of comets, which is seen in our atmosphere every 76 years, is Halley's Comet. But every year new comets appear in our sky even though most are not bright enough to be seen without a telescope or binoculars. It is believed that far beyond Pluto's orbit there is a cloud of ice chunks and dust which contains comets. Gravity from nearby stars are believed to cause the comets to fall toward the sun where Jupiters gravity moves it into a closed orbit. Scientist interest in comets arise from the material brought to us from the extreme depths of our solar system. bodyOffer(1250) The largest known meteorite to ever hit the earth landed at Grootfontein in Nambia, South Africa and weighed 60 metric tons. In the United States a huge iron meteorite that struck the Arizona desert about 20,000 years ago was destroyed by the impact but left a crater that measures .74 miles. On January 3, 1970 a 21.6 pound meteorite landed in Oklahoma and was recovered. A meteorite weighing 33 pounds was discovered in Nueva Lean, Mexico and more recently a small meteorite that fell in Connecticut was recovered by a young girl and sent to scientist at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Fred L. Whipple Fred L. Whipple was born in Iowa in 1906. During his career as an astronomer, he discovered six comets and advanced the study of comets and meteors. He has encouraged amateur astronomers and advised many U.S. governmental and scientific agencies. CREDIT: ALLAN BURCH
A s an Iowa farm boy, I contracted a case of polio and it prevented me from becoming a professional tennis player. When I entered the University of California at Los Angeles, it was still my main ambition to excel at tennis. A mathematics major enabled me to bring home good grades without having to spend much time on studies. But I never made the tennis team. In my junior year, I shifted from mathematics to astronomy because the course Frederick C. Leonard gave had intrigued me, and this determined my career. Subsequently, he obtained a teaching fellowship in astronomy at the University of California at Berkeley for me. After earning my Ph.D., I accepted Harlow Shapley's offer to head Harvard College Observatory's observing program. My interests, besides computing comet orbits and looking for new comets on the photographic platesI found sixincluded galaxies, but the institute's director made it clear by subtle means that this area of research was not for me.

Books Stories Comets and Meteors Book 134 Astronomy How Did We Find Out the Earth Is Round? The Sun Publisher’s blurb If you look at the sky on a clear night, you may see a comet or meteor. A comet will appear as a small, faint cloud with a streak of light stretching out from one side. A meteor will look like a glowing object streaking across the sky. One of today’s finest science writers tells about these two fascinating astronomical topics in an easy-to-read text. Besides describing the physical characteristics and the well-known sightings of comets and meteors, Dr. Asimov clearly and concisely defines such related terms as meteorite, fireball, solar wind, and asteroid. This Beginning Science book is published under the supervision of educators and technical authorities. Some seven year olds and most eight year olds will be able to read it with no assistance. For younger readers, a list of words that may be difficult is included. Young astronomers will find this book with its color artwork and up-to-date photographs a helpful introduction to the study of comets and meteors. Review This is one of two books by Asimov bearing this title and is part of the Follett series of short astronomy books for very, very young children which started with

Books Stories Comets and Meteors Book 443 Astronomy Piloted Space Flights The Mammoth Book of Golden Age Science Fiction This is the second book by Asimov bearing this title (one of the few times in his entire 500+ book output when he duplicated a title), and is infinitely better than the first. It isn’t just a matter of its being more current, or its having more, larger, and more colorful pictures. The fact is that Asimov himself knows more about the subject (having boned up on it to prepare Asimov’s Guide to Halley’s Comet ) and includes more and more interesting information. I still wouldn’t recommend it very strongly to adults, but for its target audience it could not be beat. John H. Jenkins

Over the past decade, the United States' nuclear-detection system and spy satellites have registered 250 atomic-bomb-sized detonations on and about our planet. Why were we not told? Well, we were, now and again, when someone felt like mentioning it, and when the world's media, starved of other news, could be bothered to run the story. Why were these explosions not newsworthy? Because they come not from the arsenals of hostile states, but from comets and asteroids impacting with the Earth's atmosphere. We assume these events are rare. They are not. Their time-averaged death toll equals that of earthquakes and major floods. We assume these impacts rarely affect our lives. Author Austen Atkinson convincingly demonstrates that meteor and asteroid strikes have, and will again, skew human history in spectacular and terrible ways. Impacts from objects no bigger than a baseball can, under the right conditions, wipe out cities. There is nothing we can do about them, as such objects are too small to be detected. On the other hand, bigger objectsthe planet killers of films like

Book Description
Comets and meteors are spectacular and awe-inspiring natural phenomena, which are among nature's most compelling icons. Britain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries produced a larger number and greater variety of representations of comets and meteors than anywhere else. This beautifully illustrated book discusses why this was the case and examines the link between these works and the achievements of British science in the wake of Newton and Halley. It will be of interest both to astronomers and art historians, whether amateurs or professionals.

    THE SOLAR SYSTEM
has nine planets, though Pluto may not be a planet.
However that may be, the asteroids and comets also revolve around the sun in the same way as the planets, but their orbits differ from the planetary orbits.
the large number of asteroids (small rocky bodies) orbiting the Sun, mostly between Mars and Jupiter but also elsewhere; and the comets (small icy bodies) which come and go from the inner parts of the solar system in highly elongated orbits and at random orientations to the ecliptic. With a few exceptions, the planetary satellites orbit in the same sense as the planets and approximately in the plane of the ecliptic but this is not generally true for comets and asteroids. The distinction betwwen asteroids and comets is controversial but most references to asteroids are to smaller solid bodies while comets may be of volatile substances and have more elliptical orbits The well known belt of asteroids is between Mars and Jupiter but here are Near Earth asteroids crossing the Earth's orbit and now there is also the
    Kuiper Belt
Starting in 1992, astronomers have become aware of a vast population of small bodies orbiting the sun beyond Neptune....... Observations show that the trans-Neptunians are mostly confined within a few degrees of the ecliptic, leading to the realization that they occupy a ring or belt surrounding the sun. This ring is generally referred to as the Kuiper Belt. .
