COMORO ISLANDS Les Comores
Coelacanth - Livingstone's Flying Fox - Shirazi - Volcano - Coral Reefs - Islam - Western Indian Ocean - Ancient Maritime Trade - Ylang-ylang
Located in a strategic position at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, the Comoro Islands once played a major role in a thriving world economy of the western Indian Ocean . The archipelago arose from the seabed of the western Indian Ocean as the result of volcanic activity. The four major islands: Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Moheli), Nzwani (Anjouan), and Maore (Mayotte), are of varying age with distinct topograhical characteristics. Mayotte, the oldest of the islands, is closest to Madagascar and is highly eroded with slow, meandering streams. Ngazidja, the youngest of the islands is closest to Africa and has a massive, active volcano Communities on the islands are mentioned in ancient documents. Domoni, located on the eastern shore of the island of Nzwani (Anjouan), for example, was described as a major trading center in the fifteenth century. It had trade contacts with Africa and Asia and we know from archaeological evidence that trade existed between the community and places as far away as Japan. After the Portuguese entered the Indian Ocean many European and American sailors visited the islands. These included whalers, merchants, and pirates, such as the infamous Captain Kidd . Sailors especially liked the island of Nzwani and it served as an important refueling and provisioning stop. But after the opening of the Suez Canal, the Comoros ceased to be on the main route of trade and, except for an occasional incident of history, they virtually disappeared from American and European awareness. Today, the Comoros are "Forgotten Islands."

Comoros Changed Its Name
Dateline: 05/18/99 On Friday, April 23, delegates from the three-island country of Comoros met in Madagascar to develop a plan to give the country's two smaller islands more autonomy. Comoros is located in the Mozambique Channel of the Indian Ocean , between Mozambique and the island of Madagascar. Over the years, the two smaller islands of Comoros, Anjouan and Moheli have felt powerless against the largest island, Grande Comore, where the capital of Moroni sits. The autonomy deal was approved and the long-form name of the country was changed from the "Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros" to the "Union of Comoros Islands."

Comores (The Comoros Islands) "The Perfume Islands" With two thirds of the world's perfume essence coming from these volcanic islands, its not surprising that the Comores are known as the perfume islands.
Situated off the East African coast the islands are steeped in rich history and culture imported centuries ago by Arab, Portugese and French traders. Today visitors can re-discover the ancient mosques, volcanic lakes and white beaches, not to mention the colourful coral reefs and superb scuba diving. These islands are also known as the fantasy islands, Comoros islands have all the ingredients to generate fantasy: an incredible history with pirates, sultans, kings and queens, all this mixed with tropical weather, incredible white sandy beaches and extraordinary flora and fauna. Note: if travelling to Comoros we recommend that you check the Official web site for the UK Government Foreign Office for details on the country before departing. The capital and largest city is Moroni The indigenous people are a mix of African, Arab, and Asian (mostly Indian and Malay) descent. Islam is the state religion (with Sunni predominating), and there is a sizable Roman Catholic minority. Arabic, French, and Comorian (a blend of Swahili and Arabic) are all official languages. With few natural resources, poor soil, and overpopulation, the islands are one of the world's poorest nations. Some 80% of the people are involved in agriculture. Vanilla, cloves, ylang-ylang (used in perfumes), and copra are the major exports; cassava and bananas are also grown. Rice and other foodstuffs, cement, petroleum products, transport vehicles, and consumer goods are imported. The country is heavily dependent on France for trade and foreign aid. The Comoros is a member of the Franc Zone.

    Comoros
Introduction [Top of Page] Historical perspective: Comoros has had difficulty in achieving political stability, having endured 18 coups or attempted coups since receiving independence from France in 1975. Most recently, in August 1997, the islands of Anjouan and Moheli declared their independence from Comoros. An attempt in September 1997 by the government to reestablish control over the rebellious islands by force failed, and presently the Organization of African Unity is brokering negotiations to effect a reconciliation.
