1. Jazz Composers
Jazz Composers. A good jazz composition should imply more than it says. Everyone'sshort list of top jazz composers should begin with Duke Ellington.
http://www.wright.edu/~martin.maner/comp01.htm
Jazz Composers When you think about it, jazz composition is an incredibly difficult art. A great jazz composer must create a piece of music that is interesting as written , but also interesting as a framework for what is not written . A good jazz composition should imply more than it says Everyone's short list of top jazz composers should begin with Duke Ellington. My personal short list would then include Thelonious Monk, Gil Evans, Horace Silver, and Wayne Shorter. And of course many of the Tin Pan Alley composers wrote tunes that generations of jazz musicians have cherished as frameworks for improvisation. I hope to post some more tributes to jazz composers in the future, but I'm going to start with three personal favorites that deserve more recognition: Billy Strayhorn, who was in many ways eclipsed by his mentor and collaborator, Duke Ellington; Jelly Roll Morton, well recognized in his day but not well known to today's young jazz listeners, and Hank Mobley, who is still better known as a tenor sax player than as a composer, though his jazz compositions are wonderful. Wrote Mozart regard to his Fugue K394b : "[...] This fugue has been created expressly for my own Constance. For she will listen to nothing except fugues, particularly fugues by Händel and Bach, and upon hearing me play them, often by heart, she would ask me whether I had never written one; when I answered no, she would reproach me for not wishing to compose the most artistic and the loveliest thing that music had to offer, and never stopped asking me to compose one for her In time and if the right opportunity arises, I shall write five more and give them to Baron van Sviten [sic!], whom I know to possess a veritable treasure of good music ".

BMI Jazz Composers Workshop The BMI Jazz Composers Workshop was formed in 1988 to provide an environment where the composer has the freedom to explore new avenues in the creative process, while at the same time honing and solidifying his or her skills. The workshop, directed by BMI's Burt Korall, is notable for the expertise of two instructors who understand the current state of jazz composition and have a strong sense of what can be accomplished through such an undertaking: Manny Albam and Jim McNeely. The workshop faculty and guest lecturers are a very specific breed. They began and have roots "in the street" where jazz continues to come to life and takes on a particular sense of identity. As Bob Brookmeyer, the workshop's first musical director, said: "We are now raising a generation of musicians who are being taught by teachers who were taught by teachers who were taught by teachers. In the workshop, this is not the case."

    : Trumpet/Flugelhorn
Miles Davis, never falling short of new ideas, had for the last 5 decades inspired countless numbers of Musicians and Composers...Many of which have become accomplished musicians by their own right...In the early years, Dolphy, Coltrane, Charlie "Bird" Parker, Philly Joe Jones, to name a few, all played a part in Miles' quest for new directions. It is no surprise to later see the talents of Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, and George Coleman all helping to bring Miles' ambitions together..Miles has recorded over 120 albums, but a few will always stand out above the rest.. Such was the case with "Milestones", "Kind of Blue", "Four and More", "My Funny Valentine" and "Plugged Nickel"..The following era would include "Miles Ahead", "Bitches Brew", and "In a Silent Way"....Miles was truly miles ahead, and his music will live forever.. We may never really understand the man, "Miles Davis", but we will continue to love his music now and for years to come..

The Wizard of Oz. You decide who is going to play whom. It is understood that Dorothy is going to start in Kansas, there's going to be a tornado, she's going to encounter a gaggle of crazy characters in the Land of Oz, and by the end, she will wake up in her own bed at home. The way that you get from scene to scene will be up to the actors at the moment, but they are all so familiar with the progression of events and the underlying theme/story that the improvisation adds a special kind of intensity and calls for a higher level of engagement. This frequently results in a new sense of excitement and the possibility of understanding in a new fashion this well-known story.
That, in essence, is what a jazz band does. They all know the tune beforehand, and the responsibilities of their chosen instruments. The piano, guitar, bass and drums, while all able to fill the role of soloist, are essentially there as accompaniment, and provide the rhythmic and harmonic basis over which the other soloists will invent their own melodic variations. The framework is flexible so that the soloists may shorten or lengthen their improvisations depending on the inspiration of the moment. The other players, then, have a responsibility to react to what has preceded them. Even when they are not soloing, members of a jazz band have to be intimately attuned to the music at all times because they never know what direction it might take. If you don't, you may, as
