    "Three Black Kings"

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974) formed his first band at the age of 19 and became nationally famous while appearing in Harlem nightclubs, as he brought a new level of style and sophistication to jazz. Though he was a gifted piano player he considered himself to be a composer and arranger first, and among his thousands of compositions are enduring jazz standards like "Satin Doll," "Take the A Train." and "Mood Indigo."
Ellington and his loyal band members perfected a sound that was unmistakable, beginning with the "hot jazz" of the 1920s ragtime period and evolving into the swing era of the 1930s. The song, "It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing" even came to be the definition of pre-World War Two jazz in America. Top

    Jazz Composers Collective
Michael Blake, Ron Horton, Ted Nash, Ben Allison, Frank Kimbrough
When Ben Allison proposed forming the Jazz Composers Collective to Kimbrough and a handful of other players, Kimbrough embraced the idea fully. Here was a chance to take the composer-oriented jam sessions that both Kimbrough and Allison had been running for some time and not only take the music to the next level, but to the public as well. In the fall of 1992 – with their own money – the newly-formed Collective created a concert series that has gone on to present adventurous jazz to New York City audiences for ten years. The basic format has remained the same: the core Collective composers-in-residence – now Frank Kimbrough, Ben Allison , Ron Horton, Michael Blake ,and Ted Nash – each put on one concert per season, sharing half the evening with a guest composer. "The Jazz Composers Collective is a virtual study of the positive effects that the DIY ethic can bring about. They are, in an unassuming way, producing some of the most vital improvised and composed music coming out of New York today. Playing on each other's projects, helping to organize concerts, pooling efforts to produce the smart, informative newsletter that details their activities - everyone helps out for the massed good of the members and audience." - Craig Nixon, Revolution in Sound Reviews "For the past decade some of the most original and intriguing sounds to be heard in New York jazz circles have come from the Jazz Composers Collective." - Bob Blumenthal, The Atlantic Monthly

to provide thumbnail sketches of selected ragtime composers and their known repertoire of both published and unpublished tunes. It is in no way complete, as there are many outstanding books on them collectively and individually. It is only meant to provide a little more insight for the ragtime novice, or perhaps a quick reference for those well versed in the art. Except where noted, the compositions listed for each composer encompass only instrumentals, as many wrote songs as well. The dates listed are either known dates of composition or publication, except where noted. For further information I will suggest certain reference sources, and for an overall view of good references currently available or tucked away in your local library, please check out my Ragtime Books and Ragtime Music Collections pages. Eight guys are a lot to fit on the little stage at Joe’s Pub. But trumpeter David Weiss and his crew squeezed in cozily last month for their CD release party. The New Jazz Composers Octet’s second disc, Walkin’ The Line, venerates a bygone era of big bands, a time when torrents of jazz streaming like freight trains out of horns was the order of the day. But while those Swing-era bands played with an unending, lindy- hopping jubilance, this young octet adds whispers of dusk to the seven tracks on their new disc including an arrangement of Chick Corea’s “Inner Space”. They’re a young group, but the style of music has seen quite a bit in its time, and there’s a tale to be told. The contrast between alto sax player Myron Walden and tenor/soprano sax player Jimmy Greene gives the group its distinguishing element. Greene lights the match and makes kinetics do its thing, while Walden takes his own route balancing assertion with elegance. On the title track by pianist Xavier Davis, Greene drives in with a brick-throwing solo. Dressed in a big white suit on stage at Joe’s Pub he led the group as it merged into a shimmering climax. The tune’s playful motif quietly dissolves into Walden’s tender solo.

Tony Marino Welcome to AAJ! New to Jazz? Building a Jazz Library History of Jazz ... Jazz Humor Concert Posters Walkin’ The Line
Rather than going with the common straightahead formula of head-solos-head, the New Jazz Composers Octet prefers ensemble counterpoint in which agreed-upon changes add a sense of the exotic. Shifting harmonies and juxtaposed meters combine with the artists’ natural rhythmic swing and reverence for tonal purity. David Weiss’ title track, for example, opens with the kinds of dissonance that would suitably accompany a film’s more dramatic scenes. Then, between fierce, bebop-derived solos, the octet continues to push their ensemble sound forward as one tight unit. With the trumpet on top, tenors and trombones in the middle, and baritone sax with bass holding up a big bottom, the band forges ahead en masse. Standout solo work from Craig Handy and Xavier Davis provide the session with that extra quality we look for in jazz. This is the octet’s second album. From New York, they’ve been together now for five years. Unlike popular music, their melodies aren’t the kind you sing to yourself in the shower. Each piece is an adventure. The composers and arrangers build each one gradually with sounds being placed together intentionally. Eight instrumental voices sound like sixteen. Acoustic timbres cause the program to retain a natural sound. As long as spirits can work successfully together like this in complete accord, jazz will continue to grow beyond the usual format.
