Catalog Description
Three hours of lecture per week. Prerequisites: CS 152 Graduate survey of contemporary computer organizations covering: early systems, CPU design, instruction sets, control, processors, busses, ALU, memory, pipelined computers, multiprocessors, and case studies. Term paper or project required.
Expanded Description
This course focuses on the techniques of quantitative analysis and evaluation of modern computing systems, such as the selection of appropriate benchmarks to reveal and compare the performance of alternative design choices in system design. The emphasis is on the major component subsystems of high performance computers: pipelining, instruction level parallelism, memory hierarchies, input/output, and network-oriented interconnections. Students will undertake a major computing system analysis and design project of their own choosing.

Located at Syracuse's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Presents the group's activities, research reports, and downloadable software for computer architecture Simulation.

Thank you for visiting the High Performance Computer Architecture and Microarchitecture Research Lab at Syracuse University. This is the first year of this lab. Professor Pease and Dr. Afzal Hossain started building this lab in November 2000. Since then we have made significant progress. Our year 2001 progresses are as following -
  • We have found a location for the lab at the first floor of Link Hall. The lab currently has two Dell Power Edge 1500 Servers, and one Dell 4300 Pentium 4 system. These machines run Linux 7.0 OS, and are equipped with microarchitecture simulators. We are using these machines as our main simulation servers. We have published three papers from our lab at different conferences last year. Our early efforts on developing microarchitectures simulators are beginning to pay off. We hope to have a good number of papers published this year. We are very glad to have James S. Burns as our research director. James S. Burns has a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from University of Southern California. He is currently an IA64 architect at Intel Corporation. James is well known in the industry as a leader for his works on Simultaneous Multithreading. James is the author of the POSM simulator.

    TUTORIAL
    By Gurpur M. Prabhu
Read Prabhu's new book Anita's Legacy This tutorial introduces undergraduate students to computer architecture concepts of caches and pipelining . It contains examples, interactive applets and some problems with solutions to illustrate basic ideas. For more information on the topics the interested reader is referred to "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach", second edition, by D.A.Patterson and J.L.Hennessy. The problems that have been solved have been taken from a number of sources but the solutions are novel and unique in the sense that emphasis has been placed not only on the answers but also on reasoning processes that will be useful in solving similar problems. Feedback consisting of comments and errors are welcome, and can be e-mailed to Gurpur Prabhu at prabhu@cs.iastate.edu. Topics Memory Hierarchy Design

Prepare for the Prerequisite Quiz before class starts. CS grads: the faculty voted to change the Preliminary Breadth Courses requirements in Fall 2000 to be systems, theory, and systems meets theory: therefore CS 252 is included with a set of systems courses such as CS262 or CS267. Grads from other departments and EECS undergrads interested in taking CS 252 in Spring, read this warning before class starts. The first class meeting will be on Wednesday January 17.
