Quick Links... Audio Typing Computer Keyboard Skills: - In-centre - Online ... Typing Speed Development Developing Computer Keyboard Skills On-line! Pitman Training has a fantastic new solution for developing your keyboard skills from home, in your office – WHERE you need to, WHEN you need to.
The course combines the benefits and support of monitored, structured tutor led training, with the flexibility of home study and distance learning. Unlike other on-line course, you are not required to be on-line as you study. Simply down load your lesson, practice (for as long as you like for free!) and when you are ready to move on, log back on to have your skills tested and move onto the next lesson. It is as easy as that!
The course starts with a feature on ergonomics – are you sitting correctly when you type? If you are using incorrect posture at your computer you could be causing a plethora of neck, shoulder and back problems in addition to Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). Once you are in position, you can chose to have useful information delivered by an audio teacher or from text prompts. This will guide you through the training, along with graphical hand displays to literally ‘point you in the right direction’.
The on-line course checks your spelling and looks for any errors in addition to monitoring your speed. The essence of this course is technique and accuracy and you will be required to achieve at least 85% accuracy before you are allowed to move onto the next level. If you were to move on before you were ready, you would only be ingraining bad habits that will be more difficult to solve later. The course will not allow this and enables Pitman staff to track progress and see where each delegate is up to and how well they are doing. This is vital information when additional email support is required.

Developing Keyboard Skills
This factsheet contains information about various methods of developing keyboard skills. The main way to become a proficient user of the keyboard is by learning to touch type. There are various programs available to accomplish this, including computer based and audio-based courses. This factsheet also highlights other keyboard skills that can be developed such as using keystroke combinations instead of using a mouse. A list of suppliers of the products mentioned in this factsheet is included at the end of the factsheet.
Why develop keyboard skills?
Whatever your level of visual impairment, learning your way around the keyboard and learning to touch type are important skills to learn. At the most basic level these skills allow you to increase the speed at which you can prepare documents and input information into a PC. For many tasks, using a keyboard can often be faster than using a mouse. For people with little or no useful vision, keyboard input is usually the only realistic way to both input data and control a PC. Although great strides have been made in voice recognition software, the most practical and accurate way for someone with a visual impairment to control a PC is by use of a keyboard. If the visually impaired person had an additional disability which meant that input using a keyboard was impossible, then voice input would be considered but only in combination with a speech output system.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
COLOUR CODED KEYS

To assist the teaching process, colours are assigned to each finger and corresponding colour coded keys are used on the on-screen keyboard. In addition transparent on-screen hands further show which finger to use for each key. To reinforce the colour codes, coloured keyboard stickers are provided with the program. These are attached to the student's keyboard and serve to make the verbal instructions clearer. At the end of each module the student is encouraged to colour in the keys they have just learned on the printed keyboard chart provided. New keyboard charts can be printed from within the program.
POSTURE
With people in all professions spending more and more time at the keyboard, correct posture is extremely important. The program takes the time to explain how to position oneself at the keyboard and continually encourages the student to check their posture at the start of each lesson.
COMPUTER VOICE DIRECTION
The student is guided through the program by a teacher voiceover. In a relaxed style, this voiceover encourages students to complete tasks, explaining the correct procedures and touch typing practice.
