FIRST TIME TO EVERYTHING The first time I ever attempted to navigate my way around the Internet I found myself totally lost and confused. It was kind of like trying to navigate through a major city during rush hour traffic without a map and navigator. You can spend hours going in circles in a strange city and usually end up having to ask directions. ABOUT FRAMES This page is designed using Frames which basically is two pages within a single page. There are two scroll bars on this page. Using the scroll bar on the LEFT will show you the various topics we've listed. Simply scroll down, place your mouse overtop the topic you are interested and click. The topic of interest will appear on the RIGHT and will replace the page you are currently viewing. To read the information use the scroll bar on the right. When you are ready to move onto the next topic simply repeat the steps above. As you click on the topics listed on the LEFT side it activates a link and shows the topic on the RIGHT side of your screen. To leave this page we've included a link to our Home Page. You'll find these at the bottom of the left scroll bar.

Brown University Institute for Elementary and Secondary Education TeachLink Spring 2002 ... View TeachLink Archives Technology: Shining Some Light on Computing and the Web: The Flashlight Program
by Stephen C. Ehrmann, Director, Flashlight Program Why Study What Children and Teachers Do with Technology? The more a school and its children use computing and the Web, the more important it is to consciously study those uses. There are at least three reasons for this relationship:
  • The technologies that once were the exclusive base for school learning (classroom construction, blackboards, textbooks, paper, pencils, etc.) didn't change quickly. So the teacher and administrator intuition, developed over a lifetime of hard-won experience, was usually a valid guide to action. But the rapid pace of change of computer technology is changing both expectations of what students should learn, as well as the means of learning. The past is no longer so accurate a guide to future action, for legislators, for system administrators, or for teachers. As quickly as new technology appears, it starts sliding down the road to obsolescence. There is no longer time for so much trial and error learning by teachers and schools. In fact, many past promises about technology-enabled reform have fallen short because the technological rug was yanked out from underneath the technology by obsolescence, long before the promised improvements in outcomes could be achieved. For an analysis of this phenomenon at the college level, see the author's article, "

Be Considerate To Your Surfers September, 2001 (Updated Jan. 21, 2002) Page 1 One thing I've always wanted to be able to do is record streaming media files. Being a newshound, there are many clips of speeches and videos that I wanted to save for history's sake. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 were such an historic event that I wanted to save for my children to see as it happened without the effect that time tends to have on things, that I set out to find a way once and for all. Thanks to a well-informed site visitor (Thanks, Lester!), I've been alerted of a way to also record RealMedia files! You'll find the info further down the page under the info about ASFRecorder. Caching The Web: A great project backed by Alexa is The Internet Archive . They've got tons of streaming media available for you to download from any event going as far back as 1995 (they claim). They've also got full copies of web sites going back that far... it's pretty neat to use The Wayback Machine to go back in time and look at your old web site (if you had one back then). Raven's Perch officially came online in the summer of '97, but they've only got caches of it starting in late '98; so either they didn't get around to finding me back then or they were only archiving certain things prior to that time (probably the former). It's worth a visit - and I recommend you download and burn anything you find that you'd like to keep. You never know when a company is going to go under and all of its data simply disappears.

  • If you sell flower arrangements, your customers are going to be people who want to buy flowers. Period. Give them what they want from the instant they hit your front page - a special offer, a few choice arrangements to look at, and then links to your catalog, how to care for their arrangements, how to contact you, etc. Don't ramble on about your business on the front page; you'll be shooting yourself in the foot. They want to see flowers and prices, and they want them now

    Computer Learning Month
Join HLN as we celebrate Computer Learning Month! It's an opportunity to take a look at the important roles computers, software and the Internet play in our lives, and particularly in our children's education and their future. Many children can't imagine a life without the computers. Computers and the Internet are important tools of our children's day. The Internet allows learners to access a wealth of information and expand their horizons. Nowhere are the challenges of effectively using the Internet and technology greater than in education. Computer Learning Month is a time to focus attention on the importance of technology to learning. This year HLN is focusing on the Internet and information literacy. Join us as we celebrate Computer Learning Month with activities and lessons that enable you and your child to take full advantage of the riches of cyberspace. What is the Internet?
The Internet is a super-network. It connects many smaller networks together and allows all the computers to exchange information with each other. Information travels through fiber optic cables and phone lines from one computer on the Internet to another The Internet includes different "protocols"(common rules for communication) like email, World Wide Web, FTP, and telnet. The Internet began in the 1950's at the Advanced Research Projects Agency a department of the US Government. The ARPA investigated the uses of technology and computers. One basic idea was networking which allows different types of computers to all talk to each other.
