The government of former president MOBUTU Sese Seko was toppled by a rebellion led by Laurent KABILA in May 1997; his regime was subsequently challenged by a Rwanda- and Uganda-backed rebellion in August 1998. Troops from Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, Chad, and Sudan intervened to support the Kinshasa regime. A cease-fire was signed on 10 July 1999 by the DROC, Zimbabwe, Angola, Uganda, Namibia, Rwanda, and Congolese armed rebel groups RCD-G and MLC, but sporadic fighting continued. KABILA was assassinated on 16 January 2001 and his son Joseph KABILA was named head of state on 26 January 2001. In general, humidity remains high and winds are light while the coastal area has a tropical climate. Average temperature ranges in Kinshasa are from 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit) to 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit). PEOPLE: Over 99% of the population are Black Africans and there are around 200 tribes which are mostly of Bantu origin. The four principal tribes are the Mongo, Kongo, Luba and Mangbetu-Azande. Other ethnic aliens include Angolans, Sudanese, Zambians, Portuguese, Belgians, Italians, Greeks, Arabs, Lebanese, Pakistanis and Indians. THE LAND Geography C overing an area of 2,435,409 sq. km, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), formerly known as Republic of Zaire, is geographically the largest State in Southern/Central Africa and is situated at the heart of Africa. The country is bordered by the Republic of Congo (west), Central African Republic (north west), Sudan (north east), Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania (east), Zambia (south east) and Angola (south west). The DRC's geographical formation is characterised by a vast central basin plateau rising to volcanoes and mountains in the east. More than half the country is covered by dense rainforest. The country is traversed by numerous rivers including the Kasai, Kwango, Kwilu, Ubangi, Mongala and Uele. But the Congo river, being the largest, is the most important in terms of its potential as a source of water and for power generation. Climate The DRC lies on the Equator. Temperatures are hot and humid in the central region, getting cooler and drier in the southern highlands, and cooler and wetter in the eastern highlands. The DRC has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The 'dry season' (18 to 27 degrees Celsius) called 'Congolese Winter' is from June to August. The 'rainy season' (22 to 33 degrees Celsius) runs from September to May when heavy, monsoon rains come. People and History Estimated at 49.3 million, the population is divided into 11 provinces: Kinshasa, Bas-Congo, Bandundu, Equateur, Oriental Province, Eastern Kasai, Western Kasai, Katanga, Maniema, North-Kivu and South-Kivu. The most densely populated of the 11 provinces is Oriental Province with 6,274,895 inhabitants.
