History
It is thought that 40,000 years ago the Pacific Region was totally uninhabited. Around that time people started to move down from Asia and settled Australia and Melanesia. The Australian Aboriginals and the tribes of Papua New Guinea are the descendants of the first wave of Pacific settlers. After thousands of years of migration throughout the South Pacific, the Cooks Islands were first inhabited around 1500 years ago. Actually, the oldest archaeological item found in the islands is a dog skull from Pukapuka, dated at 2300 years old. The Spanish explorer Alvaro de Mendana was the first European to sight one of the islands in the group - Pukapuka - in 1595. There is no record of further European contact for over 150 years, until Captain James Cook explored much of the group during his expeditions of 1773 and 1777. Cook set foot on just one island - tiny, uninhabited Palmerston - while overlooking Rarotonga, the largest. The first Europeans to sight Rarotonga were the mutineers on the HMS Bounty , who committed their crime while sailing among the Cooks.

It Will Never Be Waikiki
- March 2002 15 years has passed since our last visit to the Cooks Islands, but lucky for us, not much as changed. They still are "Heaven on Earth". The Islands lie south of Hawaii, in the same time zone, but that’s the only thing they have in common. The 15 tiny Cook Islands cover over 2 million square kilometers of the South Pacific. The nearest neighbors are Tahiti, Samoa, and New Zealand. It’s a 10 hour flight from Los Angeles.
The most populous of the islands is Rarotonga, a lush volcanic island with an encompassing reef and lagoon, and home to some 10,000 residents. But there is nothing primitive about the place, just a lot more simpler life style. Lovely hotels or self catering accommodations, excellent restaurants, easy transportation, and even internet cafes will satisfy all travelers except the very picky. Visitors to the Cooks will discover not only a wonderful climate and beautiful landscape, but a friendly and generous people, and a relaxed pace of life. The Cook Islands is truly "a special place, a special people, a special magic".
So Why Go There? It’s what the words

BRIEF HISTORY The first settlers in the Cook Islands were Polynesians (about 800AD) during the Great Polynesian migration, which began in 1500BC. In the 11 th century a chief named Toi built the first coral road in Rarotonga, lying inland called the Ara Metua. Two centuries later the great chiefs Tangiia Nui from Tahiti and Karika from Samoa met and joined forces at sea to conquer the earlier inhabitants. LOCATION The Cook Islands consist of 15 islands scattered over some 2 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean. They lie virtually in the centre of the Polynesian Triangle of the South Pacific, flanked to the west by the Kingdom of Tonga and the Samoas and to the east by Tahiti and the islands of French Polynesia. Cook Islands Culture The Cook Islanders are Polynesians, people of the 'many' (poly) islands of the South Pacific. They are Maori people, distantly related to the New Zealand Maori. Over 90% of the population is Polynesian, with small minorities of Europeans, New Zealanders, Fijians, Indians and Chinese. The local tongue is Cook Islands Maori, closely related to New Zealand Maori and to the Polynesian languages of Tahiti and Hawaii, though English is spoken as a second language by virtually everyone. Although each island has its own dialect, islanders can all understand each other when speaking Maori. The islanders are reputed to be the best dancers in Polynesia - even better than the Tahitians, say the connoisseurs. Cook Islands dance is notoriously sexy, traditionally performed in honour of Tangaroa, god of fertility and the sea. Any time is dance time, though you're really in for a treat during the frequent 'island nights,' when rotund women get surprisingly spry and unsuspecting papa'a (foreigners) get dragged up on stage to perform.

Geography The Cook Islands are a widely scattered group of islands located in the south-east Pacific Ocean approximately half way between New Zealand and Hawaii with a total land area of 241 sq km. Geologically they can be subdivided into 2 distinct groups. The southern Cook Islands compromise Raratonga which is volcanic in origin, Aitutaki which is volcanic coral and Atiu, Takutea, Mauke, Mitiaro and Manuae which are all raised coral atolls. The northern Cook Islands which comprise Penrhyn, Manihiki, Pukapuka, Palmerston, Rakahanga, Suvorov and Nassau are all low coral atolls. The main administrative and commercial center is the capital city Avarua on the island of Raratonga. The climate is tropical, moderated by trade winds. Whilst rainfall averages 2000mm per annum on the mountain slopes of Rarotonga much drier conditions prevail further north. The Islands are lashed by typhoons from November to March. The Islands are 10 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. Direct daily flights are offered by Air New Zealand from Rarotonga to Los Angeles, Auckland, Fiji, Tahiti and Honolulu. Telecommunications are excellent.

Tonga Culture
Tonga, before Europeans arrived, was one of the most powerful islands in the region and at times its empire stretched across Samoa, Futuna, Uvea (Wallis), Rotuma, Niue and parts of Fiji. Testimony to these powerful times are evident along the north-eastern coast of Tongatapu where the powerful kings (Tui) resided. This archaeologically rich area offers the largest terraced tombs ( langi ) in the South Pacific at the present day village of Lapaha (formerly known as Mua) and the hugely impressive trilithon of Ha'amonga 'A Maui, about five miles further along the north point. This trilithon is a massive 12-ton stone archway made from three single limestone slabs. How they got there and what it was used for is uncertain but two of the more creditable theories are a gateway to the Royal Gardens or a shrine for observing the seasons. Other similar but smaller structures can be found within the Kingdom's ancient empire.
Captain Cook landed very close to the ancient capital of Mua in 1777 and visited the then King of Tonga. A plaque marks the place of his first footsteps, the first of any European.

Cook Islands
Culture
The Cook Island people are culturally part of eastern Polynesia although the island of Pukapuka stands out as different in this regard. The people of Pukapuka have a close ancestral tie to the Samoan area and while most communities in the Cooks speak a dialect of the East Polynesian, Cook Island Maori language, Pukapukans speak their own language which is part of the Samoaic sub-branch of the Polynesian language family. First, there is the question of why there appears to be a pause of up to 1500 years between the colonisation of West and East Polynesia. Archaeologists fall into two divergent camps over this issue. There are those who accept the pause in Pacific voyaging and seek to explain it in various ways. Others find it inconsistent with other aspects of Pacific cultural history and consider it, perhaps, to be an artefact of archaeological sampling. Either way, the Cook Islands lie in the border region between the core archipelagos of Fiji/West Polynesia to the west and Tahiti/Society Islands to the east. Whatever happened during the initial expansion out of the Polynesian homelands, part of the story is likely to be found in the archaeological record of the Cook group. Second, there is the question of why the early cultures of East Polynesia, spread as they are over a vast and relentless ocean, show such high levels of similarity. Did these artefacts develop and disperse from some unknown innovation center located, perhaps, in what is now French Polynesia? Or can the appearance of this distinctive cultural tradition be attributed to the remarkable sea faring abilities of the Polynesian ancestors. Perhaps a voyaging network linked these diverse and scattered islands and served as a medium for the dissemination of innovations as they arose, and resulted in the development of a true, maritime community of cultures.
