The x86 OS X Success Strategy

Published in NewsFactor.com - Indexed on Apr 4, 2003
For those of you who have been wishing for a copy of Apple's Mac OS X to run on your x86 PC, your wish may soon be granted if recent reports regarding graphics accelerator companies ATI and Nvidia are to be believed. According to the reports, the two companies apparently have set up teams to investigate porting OS X to an x86 CPU. It has been rumored that an x86 version of OS X exists somewhere deep within the confines of Apple Computer's (Nasdaq: AAPL) software laboratories, although none of us mere mortals living outside the company's Cupertino campus truly know for sure.

Group Dues and Membership
ASKING FOR DUES
Membership dues should be a basic part of your fundraising plan. They are an easy, dependable source of income from your constituentsthe people who most want you to keep doing what you do. You’ll hear many arguments against group dues: "Volunteers give time, they shouldn’t be asked for money." "Our members already give to AIUSA. We shouldn’t ask twice." "Those who can’t pay will feel left out" Time, however, is not money. Group members know you need both to do your work. Churches ask for donations 52 times a year; that’s why so many stay afloat. As for leaving people out, you can design a system that won’t offend any volunteers. Groups can offer a limited-income membership or "sweat equity," a waiver of cash dues for members who come to a certain number of meetings or take on specified jobs (i.e., Case Coordinator). You play a role in your school, town, county, or neighborhood which no one else fulfills. Many people who appreciate your work cannot attend meetings; dues give them a chance to invest in the group.

Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of that years incoming freshmen.
Here is the list for the 2004 graduates:
  • The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1982. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot. They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged. Black Monday, 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression. There has been only one Pope.

THE COUNTESS OF EGLINTON
Daughter of a concert pianist, Mona Golabek picks the perfect CDs to nurture a child's love of music. When I was a little girl, there was always music in our house. At night, as I prepared for bed, my mother (my first and best piano teacher) would play for my sister and me. I remember Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune," Ludwig van Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and, especially, Edvard Grieg's "To Spring," a simple, lilting piece that the Norwegian composer described as a "musical portrait." I would listen, transfixed by the blossoming sounds of a new season: the trees bending in the warm breeze, the surprise of a cold and menacing storm, the return of warmth and, finally, a rainbow. I would close my eyes and fall asleep, my imagination full of peaceful visions. "To Spring" has been recorded many times, but I especially admire the performance of pianist Mikhail Pletnev on Pletnev: Grieg (Deutsche Grammophon). Included in the disc are a number of Grieg's other folk-song-based

Tuning Out Racist Shock Jocks Racism as humor on the radio. A few weeks ago I was awakened by a man threatening to "put a bullet in a black man's chest." There was no violence going on outside my window, rather I had my radio tuned to a local classic rock station's morning show. I did this at the request of my husband, who had come home earlier that week, in disbelief about the racist remarks that had been made on the same show. The comments of the host on the morning I tuned in were in response to the news that a black man, offended by the deejay's comments earlier in the week, had showed up at the studio door, wanting to confront the offender. The threat of violence I heard from the deejay shocked me out of bed, but I probably shouldn't have been completely surprised. In fact, racist behavior from shock jocks is no new trend.

Defining Jazz Music
Provided by MENC in partnership with PBS Estimated Time This lesson is composed of four integrated teaching sessions designed for 45-55 minute class periods. Taught as a complete unit, the lesson may span two to three weeks, depending on the amount of time allowed for in-class sharing and writing. The objectives and materials are listed in individual sections. Overview Louis Armstrong said, "Jazz is music that's never played the same way once." Ralph Ellison said, "Jazz is an art of individual assertion within and against the group..." With this lesson students will attempt to develop their individual and collective definitions of jazz. In most cities today, continuous jazz can be heard on a local FM radio station. Usually, the music will be easy listening or "smooth jazz," as it is commonly referred to in urban settings. However, this music does not completely "define" jazz. Does this music represent a particular kind of jazz? Are there other "sounds," that are not "mellow" and "quiet storm" sounding music? If so, where did the sounds come from, and who were the early players? How does this sound distinguish itself from the sounds of earlier years, or is there a distinction? Does everyone like this type of music? What do likes and dislikes have to do with the definition of the jazz art form?

Your Frugal Tips From our Readers: Page 26 Here are some frugal tips that other stay-at-home parents have shared with us. From Janice:
Dont throw out baby bottles; when finished use them for paint bottles. The brushes fit in well and you can use the disc to seal the top when not in use. From Kerry:
To give a nice finished look to a picture or needlework you are framing for yourself or as a gift, cut a piece of brown paper grocery bag a bit bigger than you need to cover the back of the picture once you have the picture or needlework all inserted and held in place, etc. Run a bead of white glue around the back edge of the frame. (It doesn't take a lot of glue but it does need to be continuous) Then dampen the paper and place it on the glue. If there if printing on the bag you want that down so it doesn't show. Let it dry and it will be as tight as a drum when it has dried. Just take a bit of old sandpaper (finest grit you have laying around) and rub it gently on the edge of the paper against the frame edge. It will cut through the excess paper and trim it really neatly. This method looks really neat and professional as if you had taken it to a framer.
