Calvin Coolidge At 2:30 on the morning of August 3, 1923, while visiting in Vermont, Calvin Coolidge received word that he was President. By the light of a kerosene lamp, his father, who was a notary public, administered the oath of office as Coolidge placed his hand on the family Bible. Coolidge was "distinguished for character more than for heroic achievement," wrote a Democratic admirer, Alfred E. Smith. "His great task was to restore the dignity and prestige of the Presidency when it had reached the lowest ebb in our history ... in a time of extravagance and waste...." Born in Plymouth, Vermont, on July 4, 1872, Coolidge was the son of a village storekeeper. He was graduated from Amherst College with honors, and entered law and politics in Northampton, Massachusetts. Slowly, methodically, he went up the political ladder from councilman in Northampton to Governor of Massachusetts, as a Republican. En route he became thoroughly conservative.

As President, Coolidge demonstrated his determination to preserve the old moral and economic precepts amid the material prosperity which many Americans were enjoying. He refused to use Federal economic power to check the growing boom or to ameliorate the depressed condition of agriculture and certain industries. His first message to Congress in December 1923 called for isolation in foreign policy, and for tax cuts, economy, and limited aid to farmers.

CALVIN COOLIDGE
Thirtieth U.S. president; born in Plymouth , Vermont; the only President born on Independence Day. He attended Black River Academy in Ludlow and did a post-graduate term at St. Johnsbury Academy. After graduating from Amherst College, he practiced law in Northampton, Massachusetts. He held a series of local and state offices until becoming governor of Massachusetts in 1919, gaining national attention there for using the state militia to suppress a police strike. The fact is, the strike was over by the time the militia was activated, and he had acted upon the request of Boston's mayor. Elected Vice-President to Warren G. Harding in 1920, he succeeded to the presidency on Harding's death in 1923. Coolidge was visiting the family homestead in Plymouth when word came that Harding had died. He agreed to a ceremony at which his father, a Justice of the Peace (but acting in his capacity as a Notary Public), would officiate. Later, when asked how he knew he could perform the ceremony, the elder Coolidge replied, "Nobody told me I couldn't." Coolidge was in turn elected to serve a full term as President the following year. Popular and deliberately hands-off in prosperous times, he was noted more for what he did not do and say than for what he did: he is often quoted as having said "the business of America is business," though he he never actually did so. What he actually said was "the chief business of the American people is business," which, though similar, means something entirely different when left in the context in which it was offered. He declined renomination in 1928.

Located on Route 100A between Woodstock and Rutland Vermont, the rural Vermont town of Plymouth Notch, the birthplace and boyhood home of Calvin Coolidge, has remained unchanged since the turn of the century. The homes and community buildings present at that time have been preserved as have many of their original furnishings. This U.S. historic site is owned, operated and maintained by the State of Vermont. Between Mid May and mid October you can visit these splendid historic sites daily from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm 7 days a week. During the winter months special exhibits may be viewed at The Aldrich house. Every 4th of July the site hosts a special celebration. The Visitors center was built by the State of Vermont in 1972, the centennial of President Coolidge's birth. There you can find a museum, gift shop and other exhibits. The Wilder Barn has an extensive collection of framing implements and dates back to 1875. The Wilder House was originally a tavern built around 1830 and was the childhood home of President Coolidge's mother, Victoria Josephine Moor. The Coolidge Homestead was the location where President Coolidge took the presidential oath of office after the death of President Harding in 1923. Recently a signed copy of the inaugural oath of office was purchased by a California History professor for $15,000. He died there in 1926 and is buried in the town cemetery beside six generations of Coolidges. Many other fine historic buildings remain in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, each with its own special history and ambiance.

Address of President Calvin Coolidge
Washington, D.C., October 19, 1927
Address of President Coolidge, on the 19th of October, at 2:30 p.m., at Washington D.C., accepting the monument of Gen. George Gordon Meade. President Coolidge spoke as follows: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: America has long been the most generous to those who have rendered service in time of war. We have not only been lavish in the public honors which have been conferred upon our veterans, but we have also bestowed upon them pensions and gratuities reaching down to every man in the ranks, with which no other country can make any comparison. Such beneficences accorded to Civil War veterans will probably exceed twice the cost of that great war, although it lasted for a space of four years. It has been in this field, rather than in the direction of memorials and monuments which might correspond to the resources of our country and the importance of the men and events commemorated, that our action has been most conspicuous. It took the better part of a century to raise a fitting monument to Washington, nearly 60 years to express our appreciation of Lincoln, and about the same length of time to place a statue to Grant in the Capital City of the Nation. This condition arose from no lack of appreciation of distinguished services, but rather from a lack of appreciation of what might be done in the way of public adornment through the agencies of architecture and sculpture. It can no be denied that some of the efforts which the government has made, both in buildings and in monuments, have served to confirm the impression that they do not always increase the beauty of their surroundings. It is a satisfaction to realize a change has come over public opinion. We have made a marked increase in our ability for artistic expression. It is not be wondered at, therefore, that while some memorial has been raised to a number of his comrades, it was not until the present time that a statue has been erected in this city in honor of Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade. But there are great compensations for the delay in the beauty and appropriateness of the memorial and in the demonstration of the enduring quality of his fame.

Plymouth Notch has been called one of the best-preserved presidential sites in the nation. Birthplace and boyhood home of Calvin Coolidge, this small Vermont hill town is virtually unchanged since August 3, 1923. It was then that Vice President Coolidge was visiting his old family home, and the unexpected news of Warren Harding's death had just been received. Coolidge became the 30th President of the United States when his father, a notary public, swore him into office at 2:47 a.m. in the sitting room. A single kerosene lamp lit the scene. The so-called "Homestead Inaugural," unique in American history, immediately brought Plymouth Notch to world attention. Without electricity or plumbing, old-fashioned Plymouth fascinated most Americans of the sophisticated "Roaring Twenties." Thousands of visitors descended, including one memorable day in 1924 when 4,500 cars were counted in the village, which normally numbered twenty-nine residents.
