THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF MOUNT RUSHMORE
IS ON AUGUST 10, 2002
by
Jim Cooke Jim Cooke will travel to South Dakota to participate in a reenactment of the 1927 dedication on August 17, 2002. This 75th Anniversary event is sponsored by the National park Service. Jim has been performing Calvin Coolidge: More Than Two Words since 1985. He has continued this role and his contribution to Coolidge history with his Ask the President section of this web site.
In America, the post 9/11 world is a world of fears and apprehensions. Is Mount Rushmore in danger? Well, maybe. The possibility of a threat to America’s “Shrine of Democracy” is considered real though no threats have been reported. But, whatever the reality security was high in the Black Hills of South Dakota on Memorial Day and again on this 4th of July. Today, vigilant patrols continue. However, 75 years ago, there was real danger that sculptor Gutzon Borglum's dream would never be released from within the granite where he saw it. That might have been agreeable to those Native Americans who see Mount Rushmore as a place sacred to the ancestors but now desecrated by the images of four dead white men. Yet, the Indians of yesterday, it is said, saw the whole earth as equally sacred to their ancestors.

Charles E. Dawes Born: July 4, 1872
Plymouth, Vermont Occupation: Lawyer, Governor Married Grace Anna Goodhue Died: January 5, 1933
Northampton, Massachusetts Early Years:
Coolidge attended a one-room school until he entered Black River Academy at 13. He graduated with honors from Amherst College in Massachusetts, decided to become a lawyer and passed the bar examination in less than two years. His Presidency: As president during the roaring 20s, Coolidge was a symbol of prosperity. He was thrifty, conservative regarding economics, and had common sense which people admired. He was not very interested in foreign affairs, but took measures to protect American interest in Nicaragua and improve relations with Mexico. His Life: At 2:30 on the morning of August 3, 1923, while visiting in Vermont, Calvin Coolidge received word that he was President. By the light of a kerosene lamp, his father, who was a notary public, administered the oath of office as Coolidge placed his hand on the family Bible.

    • President Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It broke the Treaty of 1880 with China which allowed Chinese immigrants to enter the U.S. While the Chinese Exclusion Act did halt immigration for 10 years and kept already immigrated Chinese from becoming citizens, Arthur had already vetoed a bill which would have banned any Chinese immigration for 20 years. In 1883 Buffalo Bill, who had become famous hunting buffalo to feed the crews who were laying track for the Transcontinental Railroad by the Union Pacific, organized the first of his wild west shows. These shows featured sharpshooter Annie Oakley and Sioux chief Sitting Bull. In 1883 President Arthur signed the Pendleton Act. This act reformed civil service, which was believed to be filled with politically connected individuals who didn’t really do any work. The Pendelton Act created exams for government jobs. It also created a Civil Service Commission to oversee the new competitive merit system. Chester Alan Arthur - portrait and biographical information at the White House web site.
