This piece can't possibly cover the whole ground of Costa Rican culture, but it does discuss the following points: race, class, customs, identity and religion. Costa Ricans, as any other people, are complex and full of surprises. The country boasts a population close to 3.5 million people, which by standards of the region, is not large at all. El Salvador, for example, is half the size of Costa Rica, but it has double its inhabitants. Also, the growth rate of the population of Costa Rica is only 2.3% per year, and it's actually decreasing.

Ticas and Ticos - The People
The inhabitants of Costa Rica like to call themselves Ticos or (for women) Ticas, an abbreviation of Hermaniticos and Hermaniticas - little brothers and little sisters; an affectionate nickname popular throughout Central America.
Within the country the population density varies from one region to another. In the heavily-populated Meseta Central an average 300 people live in each square kilometer; in the sparsely populated coastal regions the average is only 20 people per square kilometer. More than half of all Costa Ricans live in cities, a trend which is typical in Latin America. The average age of its population, however, remains a serious problem: 60 percent of all Ticos are younger than 25 and almost 50 percent are younger than 20. This means that thousands of new jobs have to be created each year - no small task in times of recession. Demographics The native Indian inhabitants of Costa Rica now number approximately 15,000 and make up 0.5 percent of the population, as opposed to 100 percent in 1502. Descendants of the numerous Indian tribes now call themselves Indigena (indigenous), but are mostly of mixed race following 500 years of contact with the white inhabitants. The word "Indio" is considered by many to be an insult.

Costa Rican People The vast majority of Costa Rican people are White, mainly of Spanish decent. Less than 2% of the population is Black, except in the thinly populated Caribbean province of Limón. Here, about 33% of the inhabitants trace their ancestry to either the early days of slavery in Costa Rica or to the immigration of labor forces from Jamaica to build the railways and work the banana plantations in the late 1800's.
Indigenous Tribes
A small number of Indians remain, making up less than 1% of the population.

Its wildlife, natural attractions and reputation for conservation attracts nature lovers from all over the world. Governmental initiatives have made efforts to preserve the country's image as an ecotourism destination, making Costa Rica one of the best places to experience the tropics naturally and with minimal impact. As much as 27% of the land is designated to National Parks, forest reserves and Indian Reservations. The cultural activity in Costa Rica has only begun to flourish in the last 100 years, due to a historical European influence erasing most of the indigenous culture. This leads to the country being noted more for its natural beauty and friendly people than for its culture.

and golf courses are under construction or finished in the Central Pacific and Northern Pacific coasts of Costa Rica. As they say, Costa Rica is hot and the boom is underway. The newly elected President Miguel Angel Rodriguez has promised to make tourism and foreign investments a priority of this government and concurrently has begun to improve the infrastructure of roads and ports including a new port designed specially for cruise ships in the Pacific port of Puntarenas. Due to its convenient location, Costa Rica is readily accessed by land, sea and air. Visitors from Canada, United States, Mexico and the rest of the Latin American countries can travel all year round by land via the Inter-American Highway. There are also many airlines flying into Costa Rica, among which are: LACSA, COPA SAHSA, TACA, SAM, AMERICAN AIRLINES, CONTINENTAL, UNITED, CONDOR and LTU from Germany, CANADIAN NATIONAL AIR, LADECO, IBERIA, MEXICANA, KLM, AVIATECA, VARIG, SERVIVENSA. Located on the Central American Isthmus, Costa Rica has ready access to the farthest reaches of the world thanks to its ports on both oceans, which have high-tech infrastructure, accordingly to international requirements. Such is the case of Port Moín on the Caribbean and Port Caldera on the Pacific.

Spring Semester in Costa Rica
Culture Shock
Previous Topic (Money Matters) Next Topic
Topics GENERAL INFORMATION: People usually experience a variety of emotions when adapting to a foreign culture, ranging from excitement and interest in the new culture to depression and fear of the unknown. The difficulties and emotional insecurities that you experience can be a direct result of what is termed "culture shock"an often painful feeling of being "out of synch" with how people in a different cultural environment carry out their everyday lives. There are five fairly distinct phases to culture shock, each experienced in turn for various amounts of time, depending on your general adaptability, amount of experience away from home and other individual factors:
  • Initial excitement: After months of planning, you are finally here! Everything is new and different and you are high on the experience. This phase begins with your arrival in the new country and ends when the excitement wears off.
  • Disorientation: This happens in different ways but is the "out of synch" experience referred to above where you just can't seem to get a handle on what is going on. It may be the longest of the phases if this is your first experience abroad.

Blue means the sky, opportunities at reach, intellectual thinking, perseverance to accomplish a goal, infinite, eternity, and ideals of the religious and spiritual desires. White means clear thinking, happiness, wisdom, power and beauty of the sky, the driving force of initiatives to search for new endeavors, and the peace of Costa Rica. Red means the warmth of Costa Rican people, their love to live, their blood shed for freedom, and their generous attitude. Back to Top
    Usage
Flag in Castilian Spanish has two meanings: "Bandera" and "Pabellón Nacional." The first one refers to a national flag. The second one refers to a national flag with the national shield printed on the center of the red stripe. Most High Schools and Primary schools, public offices, government offices, foreign missions and merchant ships must have the "Pabellón Nacional." For parties or civil activities people use the "Bandera."

Brief information of geography, economy, government, and culture.
    http://www.peacecorps.gov/countries/costarica/culture.cfm
April 4, 2003 11:10 PM Geography and Climate
The Republic of Costa Rica is located in Central America, with Panama to the south and Nicaragua to the north. It covers a land area of 19,652 square miles, about the size of West Virginia, between 8 and 11 degrees north latitude. The Caribbean Sea is to the east; the Pacific Ocean is to the west.
A range of active volcanoes runs through the center of the country, continuing north into Nicaragua. Much of the country was once covered with dense forests and jungles although most of this has been cut down to provide farmland. There has been a concerted effort to preserve what is left of the tropical forests by creating a national park system. Costa Rica is famous for its great diversity of tropical flora and fauna with more than 400,000 different species thought to exist there.
There are two distinct seasons in Costa Rica, rainy and dry. For much of the country, the rainy season lasts from May to November, but this varies slightly by location, and parts of the Caribbean coast receive rain year-round.
    Economy and Government
The economy of Costa Rica has in the past been dependent on the production and export of bananas and coffee. While these agricultural products, including the production of sugarcane and beef, are still important to the economy, tourism, manufacturing and services have gained importance as the economy has diversified. Due in part to the political stability and the educated work force, foreign companies are investing in Costa Rica. However, Costa Rica still has serious development needs in both urban and rural areas.
