lothing during the reign of Elizabeth always reflected the social status of the wearer. There would be no doubt in ones mind about picking out the nobility in any given crowd. Clothing was a direct indication of wealth, much in the manner of imported suits in the present. The cost of clothing was related to the type of fabric and (in the days before synthetic dyes) the color. Purple dye was extracted by crushing thousands of tiny sea snails; similarly, crimson dye was obtained by crushing a certain type of beetle. Processed fabrics such as velvet or corduroy were costly, as were satins and other fine weaves. Cotton, although common in this day and age, was expensive and uncommon before the rise of the cotton gin. Harvested cotton was cleaned by hand, a lengthy and laborious process. Cotton was imported from India or the Americas with an associated high cost before taxation. Cotton was an expensive fabric up til the 1800s. Flax and wool were the more common fibres. Flax (a plant called flax) is made into linen, which while expensive now, wasn't when it was homespun. Wool yarn became wool fabric of all weights, including tweed which was woven wool fabric that had been beaten on one side while wet to form a wooly, wind-proof material.

INTERNET RESOURCES
A wealth of information on fashion and costume resources exists on the Internet. Both the contemporary nature of fashion as well as the historical aspect of costume are extremely well served by the visual and hypertext medium of the Internet. The fashion industry and fashion devotees have created sites that provide access to runway shows, designers, models, trade information, and current events. Costume historians have designed sites that can be used to research costumes, locate visuals, and document the creation of accurate historical garments. Richard Martin, curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, notes in his introduction to Contemporary Fashion, “We could not avoid fashion today if we tried: fashion constitutes the pervasive and persuasive culture of our time.”1 The culture of fashion, costume, and the Internet has successfully converged to offer unique, innovative, and informative Web sites. Individuals first used the Internet as a vehicle for disseminating opinions and images on fashion and costume and created personal homepages on topics such as punk style, makeup, and designers. The fashion industry and professional organizations then saw the value of the Internet as an advertising and informational medium and began to develop commercial sites. Currently, serious researchers and those interested in cutting-edge fashion trends will be able to locate information on the Internet.

By Randall Whitlock
I generally make cowls in three pieces. The first is a circular shoulder cape cut wider than your shoulders, say 24 inches in diameter. A circular neck opening (just big enough to get your head through) is cut in the shoulder cape, tangent to the center.
The other two pieces are the sides of the hood. The basic shape is an irregular pentagon with an S-curved base. The length of the curved base equals half the circumference of the neck opening. Sew the two side pieces together along the top and back.
The straight remaining side is the face opening. Finish the face opening and the outer edge of the shoulder cape by forming rolled hems or by applying trim. The curved base of the hood is sewn to the neck opening so that the face opening of the hood is directed toward the shorter side (front) of the shoulder cape. The longer portion of the shoulder cape hangs down your back.
The side pieces can also be extended to form a liripipe, which is the long tail that hangs down the back in some 14th Century styles.
Randall Whitlock is the proprietor of MoiRandall's , and is active in the The Southwest Costumers Guild The latest edition of this column can be found at http://www.casfs.org/connote/costuming101.html

http://www.baycon.org/2001/costuming.html
HALL COSTUMING
What is the recipe for the perfect costume?
1 cup of imagination
2 cups of sweat
1 tbs. of blood
3 cups of tears and frustration
Stir in a little time and money, and most of all, fun.
Then of course you must serve it up to the adoring fans. So we've got the serving issue covered just come to Baycon and parade that perfect costume up and down our halls. We love to see who all comes out in costumes, what inspires you, where to find that particular object and share ideas about how it was done. Baycon will have people scanning the halls for exceptional costuming, so be seen often. You never know where we will be you might just get some acknowledgment for that perfect costume.
A note for the tall costumer, since the remodel of the DoubleTree just before last year's convention there are sections of the hotel that have a 7 foot clearance and in one area in the upstairs mezzanine there is a 6 1/2 foot clearance. These areas are directly under chandeliers. The upstairs ballrooms have the same chandeliers but are blessed with higher ceiling so there should be no problem in the Masquerade , but again there is not as much clearance as there has been in the past. So if you have a tall object as part of your costume you may want to make sure you avoid showing it off under or near the chandeliers.
