Sandra And John Walsh (October 2002)
John Walsh has been one of my personal heroes for a long time. So I felt a mixture of excitement-and trepidation-when I was introduced to him. What if, over the years, he had become more of "a star" than someone dedicated to justice and righting wrongs?
My fears were put to rest immediately. John Walsh is a kind man and a very gracious host. He put all of us at ease right off the bat and during the breaks in taping, made it a point to talk to each of us in a gently teasing way.
It's very gratifying to meet someone you've admired over the years and find that your admiration has been well placed.
Moms Who Made It Happen (October 2002)
I've received a ton of e-mail over my appearance on The John Walsh Show. People tell me they've been inspired and motivated to finally put their dreams in action; yet it was I who drew inspiration and encouragement from each of these women with whom I had the privilege to share a stage.
Not only were these women fun to talk to, but they were genuinely interested in what the other's business area was. I'll let you in on a little secret too-there were three of us who needed glasses (we couldn't wear them on stage due to the glare) and were myopic as bats. The last 50 feet to get to a sound stage is a hodgepodge of cables, ropes and other assorted barriers duct taped to the floor; you go from brightly lit areas to murky shadows within seconds-all potential disasters. As we made our way through the maze, we lightly held onto each other, with whispered encouragement. "Step....watch here...blue chord there...be careful. Step up...stage is on the right."

Glamorous. The story of a decision
Veronika Fillitz
For weeks have I now been asking my friends - FOR WEEKS!! Blond hair or no blond hair, that’s the question... Blondes have more fun, blondes are generally preferred. After all, I have to emphasize my astonishing resemblance to Marylyn... so...blond? Being asked about `blond or not blond´, my mum did not pay much attention. "Girl, you have been talking about an awful lot of things without ever having realised them. Consider marrying D., consider finishing your studies, consider..." D., normally not really interested in hair as long as no blond woman is passing by, supported my plan. Do it if you feel like it, he said whil watching soccer. It was the night that England drew 2-2 with Macedonia and Wales beat Italy 2-1... F., my best friend, was enthusiastic about my plan, frantically trying to convince me entirely. "D. will probably like that a lot, you know, he seems to have - how shall I put it - a slight preference for blond women..." As if I wouldn’t know... Even at work, my coplleagues were excited. M., my very special F(R)IEND at work, showed her support by saying that my hair colour would eventually fit my character, my arrogance and bad temper would then be matched with my hair-do. Sly old M.!!

As head of the Creative Technology Group at WDI, Ferren manages a resource for new technology and creative input for the entire company. In addition to running this group, he has been involved in many new theme park projects, including at Walt Disney World: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, The extra TERRORestrial Alien Encounter, Honey I Shrunk the Audience, Innovension, the upcoming new General Motors attraction at EPCOT, and at Disneyland: the Indiana Jones Adventure. Ferren's keynote address was titled: "Storytelling: The World's Oldest Profession." Regarding the future of the Internet, Ferren stated: "Every time a technology has been introduced that allows one or more people to do better or more compelling storytelling, like language or writing ... or what the computer will be, it has changed the course of our society. It has become a permanent part of our lives, and it has had a startling impact in establishing the kind of step functions that are characteristic of how our society runs. The power of the Internet to reach out and connect people as a storytelling conduit or new storytelling media is going to make it the most important technological invention since the printing press." Creative writing - More than just words. Youth work is an essential part of our activities all over the world. We have had very talented individuals contribute art and stories showing how they feel about using endangered species products. We would like to share their contributions with you.
A design/creative writing competition was held in conjunction with the Hong Kong Education Department. Students were asked to produce a piece of work that would convey to others the message, "When the buying stops, the killing can too" Entrants to the creative writing competition were asked to write a piece of work that would really make the reader think about ACAP's message whether it be in the form of an essay, poem, story or play. The response was overwhelming with 700 plus entries received. All demonstrated an excellent understanding of ACAP's message. This work is being used throughout Asia to encourage further youth support.
Ask your teacher to organise a creative writing competition in your school. Winning entries will be published on this site. Contact us for more information

January 2002
The American Library Association (ALA) announced today a new national partnership with Woman's Day The program features a national essay contest for unpublished women writers, to be announced in the March 12 issue of Woman's Day , on sale at national newsstands on February 19, and writers' workshops for the public in libraries across the country scheduled on April 16. "Great writers get started and inspired in libraries," says Nancy Kranich, immediate past president of ALA, who is featured in the issue of Woman's Day promoting the new program. "Libraries provide the first sources for a writer's ideas and the ultimate home for their creative contributions. Libraries are where writers come together to learn and share ideas as a community." Women writers agree that libraries and librarians have great power to charge imaginations and make a difference for readers and writers. "The library is an arena of possibility, opening both a window into the soul and a door onto the world," says former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove. "When I got my library card, that's when my life began," says famed "Sneaky Pie" mystery novelist Rita Mae Brown. The national Put It in Writing @ your library essay contest kicks off during National Library Week (April 14-20) and continues until August 1. Unpublished women writers are encouraged to send in essays to
