The crime prevention program plays an important and significant role within the Bates College Community. The Crime Prevention Office works with the belief that they are a component of the educational process for students, faculty and staff within the community. Relying on a teamwork approach, the responsibility in the reduction of crime lies with Security and Campus Safety, the individual, and the campus community. Programs available to the Bates Community Bicycle Registration Program
Members of the community are encouraged to register their bicycles at no cost. The individual is provided with a numbered sticker which is placed on the bicycle. The serial number and other pertinent data is recorded on a registration form. A copy of the form is provided to the owner, Security and Campus Safety, and the Lewiston Police Department. Property Identification Program (PIP)
This program allows community members to check out scribers, engrave their property with their social security number or other identifier, and keep a list and description of these items in a safe place. The original form is retained by the owner and a copy is kept on file at Security and Campus Safety. Security Fest

Security Awareness and crime prevention programs. The following is a listing of thecrime prevention programs and projects in use at the University of Maine.
http://www.umaine.edu/security/awareness.htm
Security Awareness and Crime Prevention Programs It is the philosophy of the University of Maine that preventing crime is preferable to dealing with crime after it has occurred. A primary vehicle for accomplishing this philosophy is the Department of Public Safety's crime prevention program. This crime prevention program concentrates on the dual concept of eliminating or minimizing criminal opportunities, whenever possible, and encouraging students and employees to be responsible for their own security and the security of others. The following is a listing of the crime prevention programs and projects in use at the University of Maine.
  • Residence Hall Security: Crime prevention, safety, and security programs are presented in each residence hall throughout the year. Resident Assistants initiate the programs by contacting Public Safety. The officer assigned to the dormitory area that requests the program generally conducts the program. A week prior to the beginning of the fall semester, the Crime Prevention officer conducts safety and security briefings with the Residence Life and Program Emergency Telephones: All indoor and outdoor emergency telephones are linked directly to the Department of Public Safety to provide fast, efficient response via Enhanced 911.

The University at Albany Home Page Crime Prevention Programs UPD includes a Crime Prevention Unit that has the responsibility of contacting all students and most faculty and staff with programs to help reduce the likelihood of being a crime victim. Each incoming student is required by policy to attend a crime prevention program as part of the general orientation to the campus. In addition, throughout the academic year, officers conduct programs on specific topics of interest to various groups within the residence halls, workforce and community. Officers routinely visit residence halls and offices to discuss safety, under a program called "Park, Walk and Talk." The Crime Prevention Unit stresses individuals' responsibility to be their own primary protectors, by following simple, common sense approaches to their personal safety. For example, individual rooms and offices should be locked at all times when unoccupied, and always locked at night. Students and staff should promptly report to UPD or Residence Hall staff any unusual incidents or suspicious persons they observe in their residence halls or office areas. During a typical year, the Crime Prevention Unit will present between 80 and 100 safety and security programs. These programs are presented primarily to student groups, but are also offered to faculty and other University community work groups.

The case studies included in The Promise of Crime Prevention have all had some measure of success, and provide innovative examples of crime prevention in practice. They demonstrate that criminological theories can translate into effective crime prevention programs.

The Department has developed several initiatives to further this priority. To apply for any of the following Campus Police Crime Prevention Programs, or to bring a program to your dorm, please click here for our online registration form. Blue Light Call Stations
There are emergency two-way call stations at strategic locations throughout campus. You can identify the station by the blue light located above the boxes. When the call button is depressed, an individual can communicate directly with the communications coordinator at the Wellesley College Police Department. The individual can then notify the office of the emergency. The communications coordinator will dispatch an officer or emergency team to effectively respond to the situation. There are severe penalties for tampering with a two-way call station or turning in a false alarm. Campus Escort Program
The Wellesley College Campus Escort Program provides all members of the Wellesley College community and visitors a safe, reliable way to travel about the campus during hours of darkness, if they are travelling alone, or feel particularly unsafe. This program provides community members with either a walking escort or a shuttle van (pre-designated stops) to preclude individuals from walking alone on campus during the hours of darkness. We encourage community members to freely travel about the campus, but also recommend individuals walk with a friend during evening and early morning hours. A shuttle van makes regular stops along a pre-designated route. Walking escorts can be provided when needed.
