Crime stats unclear
Crime statistics are down on campus, according to The Students' Right to Know Report, which was recently released. The report, which is released once a year shares statistics with the Cal State Long Beach community. Though a valuable tool when deciding whether to enroll at CSULB, the statistics often come too late to inform the general student population. After all, it is now the ninth week of the semester, and this report was only released two weeks ago. The real kicker of the report is that crime rates are down.

Home About Gannett News from Gannett Investor Relations ... Jobs CRIME STATS DON'T TELL WHOLE STORY, JUSTICE OFFICIAL SAYS By Amy Zurzola, Metro Reporter, Asbury Park Press Six years of falling crime statistics are good news, but the numbers are not the whole story, Deputy U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. told the Gannett National Conference for Reporters and Editors. Much news coverage of crime nationwide focuses on drops in the murder rate and juvenile crime, but statistics cannot measure the effects of crime, its impact on victims' families and on those arrested, Holder said in a luncheon keynote speech. Clinton administration anti-crime initiatives and increased community involvement in crime prevention have been catalysts for change, but new and troubling crime trends are emerging, Holder said. Crime in rural areas increased by 1 percent this year, due in part to a thriving methamphetamine market that spurred drug-related violence. Rape numbers have not decreased, even though other violent crimes have. "We must not be complacent as a result of our recent downturns,'' he said.

New report details campus crime statistics
By Julia Ann Easley
UC Davis is publishing an expanded report of crime statistics, including for the first time crimes from a wider geographical area and incidents reported by more campus officials. The report has been prepared in accordance with new amendments to the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. The report indicates there were eight serious crimes against persons on or near the main campus and 14 at or near the medical center in Sacramento. In addition, 84 crimes against property occurred on or near the main campus and 33 at or near the medical center. Fifty-two arrests were made for drug, alcohol and weapons violations on or near the main campus and 83 at or near the medical center. At or near the main campus, 13 additional incidents were reported to non-police campus officials and not verified as crimes by the UC Davis police department The figures include statistics provided by not only the UC Davis Police Department, but also the cities of Davis and Sacramento police departments. and released each spring.

UW crime stats questioned
Some sex assaults not reported to U.S. By Steven Elbow
December 8, 2001 UW-Madison is not as crime-free as the latest U.S. campus crime survey indicates. Nevertheless, every other Big Ten university except Purdue and Illinois did separate them out. A poor safety ranking can be a public relations problem and a challenge to campus recruiters, but in a variety of interviews by The Capital Times with university and government officials, no one accused UW of a cover-up. For instance, the four non-forcible sexual assaults included in the U.S. report for the year 2000 at the UW campus were for fondling. Under the Clery Act, those offenses should have been reported as forcible sex assaults. (Only statutory rape and incest are considered non-forcible assaults.) Burke admitted that his department made a mistake in reporting them as non-forcible, but he was critical of the criteria. He said the Clery Act requires any university official in charge of security or student welfare - such as deans, resident assistants and coaches - to submit any report of a crime, whether it was reported to the police or not. The failure among some schools to file accurate and complete crime statistics for the Clery Report makes some Big Ten officials resentful. They feel they are being punished for following the rules.
