In Making the Difference Behaviour Management in schools. Thanks also to the AustralianInstitute of criminology for permission to reproduce information
http://www.cqu.edu.au/education/vins0.html
PREFACE In 1994, the House of Representatives Standing Committee of Employment, Education and Training, presented a report on violence in Australian schools. The report provided an analysis of violence in schools at that time and noted that "there were numerous programs that address different aspects of school violence specifically targeted at students, parents, teachers or a combination of these" (p. vi). Programs and resources have continued to be produced since that time. It is the aim of this Annotated Bibliography to identify the resources produced in the years 1995-1998 so that schools may use them as a basis for building their own school programs and/or professional development activities which aim to address the problem of school violence. The resources are not necessarily Australian but all are available from some location in Australia. Violence is defined as "any action (physical, verbal, sexual or psychological) used against a person, that is injurious, unjust or unwarranted" (Western Australian Department of Education, c.1998, p. 2). School violence may occur in the form of physical violence against persons, animals or property; verbal intimidation such as bullying, verbal abuse or threats; gender harassment;, or sexual or physical abuse. Violence may be perpetrated against special groups of children such as children with disabilities, children of different racial or ethnic backgrounds, children actually or perceived to be of a different sexual preference, or children of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background. Schools and Delinquency
Denise C. Gottfredson
Hardback In stock Schools and Delinquency provides a comprehensive review and critique of the current research about the causes of delinquency, substance use, drop-out, and truancy, and the role of the school in preventing these behavior patterns. Examining school-based prevention programs and practices for grades K-12, Denise Gottfredson identifies a broad array of effective strategies improving the school environment, as well as some that specifically target youths at risk of developing problem behaviors. She also explains why several popular school-based prevention strategies are ineffective and should be abandoned. Gottfredson analyzes, within the larger context of the community, the special challenges to effective prevention programming that arise in disorganized settings, identifying ways to overcome these obstacles and to make the most troubled schools safer and more productive environments.

    Undergraduate Subject Area Pages
Criminology and Criminal Justice Criminology is the study of crime and Criminal Justice is the study of society's response to criminality. In the pursuit of explanations of crime and justice, Criminology combines a number of social sciences, notably sociology and social psychology. Although in the past medical experts and psychologists focused on alleged 'born criminals', now sociologists study the diverse social conditions which lead to the criminalisation or stigmatisation of citizens and the acts they commit to provoke this. Criminology is an exciting multi-disciplinary subject which has uncovered much about the roots of crime and social deviance. Traditionally, criminology courses are offered by social science departments and do not include related legal studies. Here at UEL however, the course is taught within the School of Law and students acquire additional legal training on the more vocationally relevant aspects of this subject area. Criminology at UEL has a dynamic and diverse student body, from all sections of the community as well as from overseas If you are interested in 'the problem of crime' then this is the course for you.

    Here's How—According to Medical Studies
This site assists in opposing crime and violence
  • by citing the medical data on the subject 1836 to present , and
  • by revealing what judges " everywhere " know, via data generated in the criminal processing system.
First, let's note that doctors and other researchers have thoroughly and long studied the crime problem. They have studied, in short, the process how noncriminals are changed, turned, into criminals.
Criminals are, in other words, manufactured . Medical researchers analyze and show how this manufacturing process is done. Such people know, describe, and report the manufacturing process. This site reveals that ifnormation; and now you too can know what they have found about the criminal-manufacturing process.
Medical research techniques are well-established. They have been thoroughly established and fine-tuned since the 1530's , as particularly applied by Dr. James Lind's 1740's - 1790's activism campaign

Criminology program is the top in nation
    By Eric Hartley
Diamondback staff writer The department of criminology and criminal justice's doctoral program is the top in the nation, according to a study in the fall 1998 issue of the Journal of Criminal Justice Education. The study ranked the top 20 doctoral programs in the nation, as well as faculty members, from 1991-95. Three campus faculty members were ranked among the four most frequently cited in the nation. One of those faculty members, Lawrence Sherman, chair of the department, said he believes the department's ranking is a result of a long-term strategy to recruit faculty. He said the department recruits good researchers and people who are working on important subjects. The result is that when faculty members do research, "it doesn't just sit on the shelf," Sherman said. Sherman said areas being worked on by campus faculty members include gun violence, crime in schools, race and crime and prevention of juvenile delinquency. "Maryland is a great school," said Freda Adler, a professor of criminology at Rutgers University.
