The Flash Fiction Writing Workshop (free)is for serious writers of short short pieces (beginner to more advanced, but serious). All members share one goalto improve in the craft of writing.
The length limit for pieces submitted for critique is around 500 words, more or less, but nothing over 1,000 words.
Participation is mandatory . The minimum requirements to remain in the workshop are to submit one piece of your own each month and do four critiques for others. Those who are not able to meet these minimum requirements will be unsubscribed. We have no upper limit, however, on the number of critiques you can do for others. The more you do the more you learn about writing (by trying hard to understand and express what makes a piece effective or not effective).
In addition to critiquing each other's work, we will also discuss writing theory, try exercises, share markets, and share our publishing successes.
You must be over 18 to join and must use your real name (no aliases or pseudonyms allowed).

Dr. Valerie Balester
Writing a Critique
A critique is a formalized, critical reading of a passage. It is also a personal response to that reading, but it is more than just saying you liked a book or you thought an article was great. Your goal in writing a critique is to turn your critical reading into a systematic evaluation in order to deepen your reader's (and your own) understanding of that passage. You should determine what an author says, how well the points are made, what assumptions underlie the argument, what issues are overlooked, and what implications can be drawn from such an analysis. Critiques should include a fair and accurate summary of the passage, and they also should include a statement of your own assumptions.
  • Introduction : Introduce both the passage under analysis and the author. State the author's main argument and the point(s) you intend to make about it. Provide background material to help your readers understand the relevance or appeal of the passage. This background material might include one or more of the following: an explanation of why the subject is of current interest; a reference to a possible controversy surrounding the subject of the passage or the passage itself; biographical information about the author; an account of the circumstances under which the passage was written; or a reference to the intended audience of the passage.
  • Summary : Summarize the author's main points, making sure to state the author's purpose for writing. (See handout "Writing a Summary.")

It gave me a deep sense of how we all are connected and basically the same no matter how varied or ‘alien’ our cultural outlook is on life.” Bob Moseley of Shelton, Connecticut, for winning First Place in Stories for Children in Bristol Services latest writing competition! Bob has been a professional writer and editor with newspapers and magazines for 25 years, in which time he's been honored with New England writing awards from Associated Press and UPI. He's had stories printed in The New York Times and Sports Illustrated. This is his first attempt at a children's book. "I've written mostly sports, and I wanted to try something different," Moseley says. "I wanted to combine my love of animals and nature with a message to kids."

People summarize, water-down, and oversimplify their responsibilities and accomplishments. The result is the potential employer thinks "this person is lazy and doesn't do very much"
People write about themselves creating an autobiographical document. The résumé should be an advertisement addressing the needs of the potential employer reading the résumé. The employer should be thinking "wow, this person has exactly what I am looking for" as they read the résumé.
People use hard to read and confusing formats. A potential employer will spend approximately 20 seconds scanning each of the 50-100 résumés in front of them. An an easy-to-read format enables them to read your whole résumé in that 20 seconds. People provide more detail and depth in the job descriptions of older jobs than their present job.

Guidelines for Writing a Dance Critique
follow this guide for the long critique
  • Do some background research on the artist Get an expanded picture of their historical context, their personal history, their philosophy and an idea of what makes them unique or significant as an artist in modern dance. This will help you to frame your experience and give you a larger context for understanding. Be cogent . You only have 4 pages, use them as efficiently as possible. A brief ? page intro paragraph to establish your "thesis" should be sufficient. Save the majority of your page space for the body of your analysis. Narrow your thesis . Do not write a summary of every dance in the concert. Limit your writing to only the most important material. After seeing the concert, you may find that one or two works, or something about the style of the choreographer in general is most interesting, evocative, provocative, intriguing, etc.—this is where you should center your writing. What interested you most? What made you feel the most? What made you most want to get up and move? These sorts of places will make the assignment more interesting for you to write, and more interesting for me to read. What to look for . While you watch the concert, it may be helpful to be aware of several possible issues on which you might focus your paper.
