General Essay on the Religions of Latin America
The first contingent of humans arrived in North America from Asia during the glacial age which began some 40 thousand years ago. From North America they entered Central America sometime between 13 000 BCE and 7500 BCE spreading from there to South America. Relatively little is known about the inhabitants of Latin America during this period since our knowledge about them is based solely on excavations. However, despite the early arrival of people in Central and South America it was not until 2000 BCE that the first permanent villages showing some kind of social organisation appeared, leading to the formation of high civilisations and social stratification such as the Olmecs that flourished around 1300 BCE or the Mayas that appeared in the first millenium BCE. The settlements in Latin America varied immensely from one place to another. While societies such as the Inca of the Andes and the Maya, Olmec and Aztec of Central America developed a high level of culture, others kept a rather tribal structure. Generalisation about these cultures is, therefore, problematic. In spite of these differences it is possible to identify certain common characteristics in both high civilizations and tribal societies such as animism, a cult of ancestors and continuity between religion and political power. In some societies the mediation between the supernatural and the natural was done through a hierarchically organized body of priests, in other societies a more democratic kind of shamanistic practice was stronger.

http://philtar.ucsm.ac.uk/encyclopedia/hindu/devot/geness.html
General Essay on Hindu Devotional Groups
The chart refers to devotional sects within Hinduism. Here the use of the word 'sect' is appropriate, for many of these groups have reacted against the rigidity of orthodox Hindu society and teach that devotion is of far greater significance than divisions based on birth and caste. Some even go so far as to reject the institution of caste altogether and urge that the community of devotees should transcend such divisions. Devotion to Vishnu as a monotheistic Deity is referred to for the first time in the Mahabharata, compiled probably two or three centuries before the common era, and it is apparent that devotional groups have been in existence since that period and possibly earlier. These early cults are referred to as Bhagavatas, Pancaratras and Vaikhanasas, and appear to have been strongest in South India. Today these early groups have largely been absorbed into later sects, though Vaikhanasa priests still officiate in a few of the south Indian temples. The Shri Vaishnavas are today a major sect and are particularly prominent in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. They were founded by the renowned teacher Ramanuja (1018-1137CE) who was himself initiated into the earlier cults of Southern Vaishnavism. Ramanuja taught a devotional form of Vedanta which postulated a Supreme Personal Deity who existed in his own domain and also within each being. Today the Shri Vaishnavas control many of the major Vaishnava shrines in Tamil Nadu with brahmana priests officiating over the temple worship in accordance with strict regulations. They are now divided into two sub-groups, the Vatakalai northern branch and the Tengalai southern branch. Apart from geography, principal differences between the two groups centre on the question of whether divine grace is an absolute path to salvation and on the use of the Sanskrit or Tamil languages.

Defining a Sect or Cult Defining a Cult or a Sect is often more difficult than we think. Cults have positive, neutral and negative meanings. On the other hand Sects seem to arouse less emotional response. Tracing the root origins and the different ways scholars have used the terms Sect and Cult help in understanding what is meant by them. What is a cult? Who joins them? Is it hard to get out of a cult? What's mind control? These questions and more.

The F.B.I.'s strategic assessment of the potential for domestic terrorism in the U.S. undertaken in anticipation of or response to the arrival of the new millennium. VII. APOCALYPTIC CULTS For apocalyptic cults, especially biblically based ones, the millennium is viewed as the time that will signal a major transformation for the world. Many apocalyptic cults share the belief that the battle against Satan, as prophesied in the Book of Revelation, will begin in the years surrounding the millennium and that the federal government is an arm of Satan. Therefore, the millennium will bring about a battle between cult members - religious martyrs - and the government.
In the broadest meaning, cults are composed of individuals who demonstrate great devotion to a person, idea, object or movement. However, using that definition, many domestic terrorist groups could be characterized as cults, including Christian Identity churches, Black Hebrew Israelites, and some militias. For law enforcement purposes, a narrower interpretation of groups that qualify as cults is needed. A more useful definition of cults incorporates the term cultic relationships to describe the interactions within a cult. Specifically, a cultic relationship refers to one in which a person intentionally induces others to become totally or nearly totally dependent on him or her for almost all major life decisions, and inculcates in these followers a belief that he or she has some special talent, gift, or knowledge.

What is Cult Information Centre (CIC)?
CIC is an educational charity providing advice and information for victims of cults, their families and friends, researchers and the media. CIC was founded in 1987 and became a registered Charity (No.1012914) in 1992. It was the first educational organisation focusing critical concern on the harmful methods of the cults to be granted charitable status in the United Kingdom.
CIC's Concerns
CIC is concerned about the use of deceptive and manipulative methods used by cults to recruit and indoctrinate unsuspecting members of society. CIC believes that these cult methods present a threat to the well-being of the individual and the family. Consequently CIC sees the need for gathering and disseminating accurate information on cultism and aims to meet that need.

It lays a firm foundation for faith in 12 lessons and has been used effectively with new believers and with those who have no background in Christianity. This overview of the Bible is highly recommended and is an effective tool for sharing with international students (or any persons) who want to know more about God. Format 8-1/2x11. 07/02 Presently out of print. Available in new edition in mid-November. ENG-L142 Add to Your Faith Bill Perry An excellent Bible Study especially for an international who has just come to faith in Christ. Using the components of Christian character from 2 Peter 1:5-7, it begins a study of the New Testament epistles that helps one discover principles of spiritual growth that can then be applied in one's own cultural situation. Because of the changeability of an international student's situation, this study has been set up for use as a group study, a one-on-one situation or if need be, a self-study.
