CURLING 101
by Timothy D. Jacques
Curling? What's that? Weightlifting? An old fashioned way of making butter? Nope, it's one of the fastest growing winter sports and a recent addition to the Winter Olympics. Shrouded in nearly 500 years of history, curling is a social sport of fitness and finesse. It's one of the few games that can be played at all age levels and physical abilities. But there's an underlying question with the American public.... WHAT THE HECK IS IT

Let's learn a little more about Curling:
Curling, A Brief History The Basics of Curling The Team Delivery of the Stone and Types of Shots ... Sources Cited Three years ago, when I first stepped on the ice at my local curling club, I thought "What was I getting myself into? Stepping on an icy surface with a slipperly slider and granite stones? I must be nuts." Sure, I was a nut...a curling nut.

Curling: Yes, it's an Olympic sport
By Cynthia J. Faulkner
ESPN.com
NEW YORK "You do what? Is that the one with the broom?" It's a question curling's Team Lank frequently hears, although more people are familiar with the sport since it became an Olympic sport in 1998. Before then, few people this side of Canada had the slightest clue about the event that involves sliding rocks and sweeping brooms. Team Lank's Erika Brown, left, and Allison Pottinger sweep a path for a shot at the U.S. Olympic Curling Team Trials. "It's still a lot better than it used to be," said "lead" Tracy Sachtjen, "but it still needs more exposure." Certainly, people in the United States don't flock to indoor ice rinks to watch curling, but Team Lank's vice skip Erika Brown said, "The recognition and the knowledge that the game even exists and at least sort of vague idea in your head of what we're talking about it's definitely there now more so than it was 10 or 15 years ago." Team Lank so named for skip (or captain) Patti Lank is one of six women's teams currently competing at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Ogden, Utah. The winner of the weeklong, double round-robin tournament qualifies for the Salt Lake City Winter Games in February.

Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

U.S. shatters medal goal

Canada ended 50 years of frustration Sunday, beating the United States 5-2 to win its first men's hockey gold in 50 years. Jarome Iginla and Joe Sakic each scored twice. Cross-country athletes Larissa Lazutina (Russia) and Johann Muehlegg (Spain) were stripped on their most recent gold medals after testing positive for darbepoetin. The French judge at the center of Skategate has changed her story again. She now says she was under pressure from Canada before voting for the Russian pair. Curling
The sport of curling was demonstrated in Ottawa at the Canadian Special Olympic Winter Games in January 2000, and hosted for the first time at a Nova Scotia Special Olympic Winter Games in February 2002. This competition was hosted at 14 Wing Greenwood, where 8 teams from across the Province and our guests from Prince Edward Island put on a performance which should lead to continued growth of the sport, and hopefully representation from Nova Scotia at the 2004 National Games.
Canadian Special Olympic Curling Rules follow very closely to the rules governing generic curling, and these are outlined below. As with all Special Olympic sports, we strongly encourage our coaches to obtain NCCP Certification, and strive to deliver the best quality in sport programs.

Surprises do happen, though (the Swiss men caught Canada on a dreadful day to win the gold last time) and three different countries have won the last three world titles. The Canadian women, who breezed in Nagano and have taken six of the last nine global crowns, are odds-on to repeat ahead of the Swedes. US outlook: The men just missed a medal last time and have been on the verge at two of the last three world championships. The women won global silver in 1999, but haven't been contenders since. Home ice, though, could make the difference. US roster Men Don Barcome Jr., Grand Forks, N.D. Myles Brundidge, Nekoosa, Wis. John Gordon, Columbia Heights, Minn.
