Credit cards pushing e-currency out of the picture
Wednesday 13th December 2000
Sandeep Junnarkar, CNET News.com

Flexible fiends cause problems for e-commerce developers A year after alternative e-currencies such as Beenz and Flooz burst onto the Web scene, their companies are conceding that a strategy shift was needed after surprisingly nimble credit card companies have overtaken the niche. "I don't get the sense that alternative currencies on the Internet have gained any traction, and credit cards will continue to dominate e-commerce," said Paul Jamieson, a senior analyst at Internet research company Gomez. Credit cards "are something that consumers are used to; they are accepted nearly everywhere online and offline," Jamieson said. "Flooz and Beenz just can't offer the same versatility now or over the next few years." Robert Levitan, chief executive of New York-based Flooz.com, said his company saw the changes and has shifted away from e-commerce to a business-to-business model. Flooz's strategy is to focus on the corporate gift market, for companies to reward their employees by using Flooz. "We always thought [the shift] would happen but didn't know it would be such a large part of our business so soon. Our investors are happy with the change and want us to focus more on this," Levitan said.

Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, the incoming president of Brazil, is demonstrating an uncanny ability to move forward a progressive agenda while keeping his conservative antagonists at bay. This was clearly demonstrated in his meeting with George W. Bush in Washington on December 10.
Pablo Gentili, an Argentine international analyst at the State University of Rio de Janeiro declares : "Da Silva reaped the support of the Bush administration while making it clear that his government will set its own agenda and priorities. He has an extraordinary capacity to build broad support for his left-leaning policies in the face of domestic and international adversity." Before da Silva's arrival in Washington key Republican Congressional figures, along with right wing conservatives identified with the Reagan administration's bellicose policies in Central America, were calling for Bush to take a tough stand against the incoming president who is common referred to as "Lula." They decried the new leftist threat in Latin America, asserting a "Lula, Castro, Chavez axis" was in the making, referring to Presidents Fidel Castro of Cuba and Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.

  • Slobodan Milosevic remains in control of the essential levers of power, yet he is vulnerable. His continued leadership depends on his ability to fund a substantial political patronage system with hard currency primarily from the sale of state assets.
As he did in the late 1980s, Milosevic is manipulating Serb nationalist concerns about Kosovo to bolster his uncertain political position at home. Public apathy because of economic hardship and the recent war in Bosnia indicates that Milosevic may not be able to use nationalism to rally the Serb public. There is a sense among the people that the current Kosovo crisis may strengthen the Milosevic regime but do little for Serbia.
The rise of the ultranationalist Vojislav Seselj suggests a future successora possibility that Milosevic manipulates so as to appear more palatable to the international community.

In search of export-finance alternatives
Demand is growing for cross-border financing of small-ticket capital equipment, especially among buyers located in emerging foreign markets. Opportunities abound for insurers and lenders with the moxie to underwrite and finance these trade flows, writes Gary Mendell. Cash in advance and letters of credit are no longer competitive terms in the international marketplace. Creditworthy importers expect equipment suppliers in developed countries to offer financing options, especially when the buyers are located in emerging markets where economic growth is constrained by scarce capital, limited hard currency and high interest rates. Equipment exporters from the United States, Europe and other developed markets want to be paid in hard currency, without recourse, upon shipment and presentation of documents. Their customers in Latin America, Asia, Africa and other emerging markets seek loans or leasing, with repayment periods from one to five years, at competitive interest rates. Export-finance transactions like these need to be funded by third-party lenders, i.e. commercial banks, equipment-leasing companies and other kinds of financial institutions, often with additional support from export-credit agencies (ECAs) or insurance underwriters. Once the sole province of major manufacturers exporting aircraft and other large-ticket assets to their big overseas customers, cross-border financing is now in demand for sales of capital equipment with seven, six and even five-figure (in US dollars) price tags. But while lenders worldwide compete heatedly to participate in the large deals, the reception remains considerably chillier for cross-border financing of smaller-ticket equipment. Meridian Finance is fielding growing numbers of enquiries for middle-market and small-ticket cross-border equipment financing and our funding opportunities will go to lenders who get creative and find ways to take on this kind of business.

ENVIRONMENTAL BAGGAGE Your bags are packed and waiting at the door. Months of planning, preparation and anticipation and you’re finally embarking on “the big trip.” We have all been tourists, whether we travel to far corners of the earth or just a few kilometres to the cottage, whether we visit an all-inclusive resort or a small ecotourism lodge in the rainforest. And while we may be “just visiting”, our impact as tourists – the lingering legacy of tourism – persists in the destinations we visit, “destinations” made up of communities, natural and built attractions, and exotic cultures. Tourism is big business. Some say it is one of the fastest growing and most economically valuable industries in the world today. In Canada, for example, the economic contribution of tourism is greater than mining, fisheries, forestry or agriculture. In 1999 tourism receipts totaled an estimated $50.1 billion.

http://www.web.ca/~comfront/alts4americas/eng/05-immigration-e.html
Immigration Background International migration has increased over the last number of decades, accelerated by the process of globalization. There are currently about 125 million immigrants (people who have moved from one country to another) in the world, 80 million of whom are considered "recent" immigrants. The growing population of immigrant men, women and children has serious impacts for the countries they leave, as well as for the countries which receive them. However, despite the demands of numerous nongovernmental organizations, officials have refused to address this issue in the negotiation of trade and investment liberalization agreements. Such agreements deal only with the free movement of capital, goods, and their agents, but exclude the mobility of workers. The forces driving people to migrate are many. After political violence, the leading reason is the problem of unemployment. Immigration affects not only those who migrate. It has major consequences for the economic and social relationships between countries involved. It is therefore necessary to agree on international rules to address not only the human and labour rights of migrants, but also to regulate the flow of labour. The impacts of immigration are complex. Developing nations have become exporters of workers who are often vulnerable to exploitation. Corporations have taken full advantage of this situation, contributing to the lowering of wages for some workers in host countries. At the same time, the money remitted by the immigrant workers to family members in their homeland plays a major role in reducing problems in the current account balance in developing economies and cushioning social problems and extreme poverty.

http://www.web.ca/~comfront/alts4americas/eng/00-foreword-e.html
Foreword On April 15-18, 1998, about 1,000 men and women from nearly every nation of the hemisphere gathered for a Peoples' Summit of the Americas in Santiago, Chile. We gathered to express our collective rejection of the dominant "neo-liberal" agenda that promotes trade and investment liberalization, deregulation, privatization, and market- driven economics as the formula for development. The Peoples' Summit focused on building a hemispheric social alliance around concrete, viable alternatives. Meanwhile, the Presidents and Prime Ministers of our nations were also meeting in Santiago, attempting to negotiate a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). It is expected that the FTAA will follow the pattern of existing agreements like NAFTA and expand neo-liberalism throughout the hemisphere. This document expresses our determination to construct an alternative to the FTAA based on the proposals described herein. Driving this effort on alternatives is the sense that the neo-liberal economic model has been a disaster for most of the peoples of the hemisphere.
  • Peasants whose labour once fed their nations and themselves are forced to export risky "cash crops" to bring in foreign currency and to provide the well-to-do in the North with meat and fresh produce throughout the year. This has resulted in hunger for many and reduced food quality for others, and has driven hundreds of thousands of small farmers from their lands.

Currency Options Overview
Options in General: Definition and Use
Options are actively used within many companies as a risk management tool and are an important tool in that process. As managers of risk it is important to have a good understanding of options as it applies well to our unique position in the market place. What is an option? Simply stated, an option is a choice. The buyer of an option acquires the right and not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset under specific conditions in exchange for the payment of a premium. It is entirely up to the buyer whether or not to exercise that right; only the seller of the option is obligated to perform.

Boycott US Products and Currency! The only way to STOP the War Machine United States of America is the mightiest country on earth. It has a weapons arsenal that can easily destroy or poison the earth for every living creature for the next million years if not for eternity, and it gets increasingly eager to use some of it even if the minds of the leaders so far has stopped before suicide. But US is far from the most just, fair, decent or cooperative nation. Like many other nations or empires in the same position it has demonstrated, never more clear than in front of United Nations General Assembly last year, its arrogance and total contempt for the rest of humanity. When a leader of 320 million people without mandate tries to dominate and rule the remaining 6,000 human beings on the globe with the help of economical and military means, it is time to stop the madness! And no empire lasts! Americans who object to their leaders are many and getting more numerous every day, but the strength of the forces they have to fight makes it very difficult and is the reason why the majority in that land still support the men who so unrelentingly pursues their inhuman agenda. The American dissenters need help! And remember, the number we all have to fight is a drop in the ocean. It is not Americans we want to get rid of. It is only those, perhaps 10,000, who are very wealthy, evil and lusting for power that they are prepared to use their wealth or cunning to get even richer or more powerful without any thoughts of the consequences for others. True we have some of those in every country and their time might come, but the first object is to make US respect international law and human rights and those 10,000 can do that, or they can be replaced by people who can and are willing to.

    The Potential of Local Currency
    By Susan Meeker-Lowry
People have always traded and bartered with each other. As economies became more complex, money was created as a more convenient means of exchange. In those early days, money was generally a commodity something valued by the people who agreed to use it. Iron nails were used as money in Scotland, dried cod in Newfoundland, sugar in some West Indies Islands, salt in ancient Rome, wampum by Native Americans, corn in Massachusetts in the 1600s. Sometimes money was backed by a commodity: the first Latin coins were stamped with the image of a cow and could be redeemed for cattle. Paper money was created in the 1700s. It was basically an IOU backed by gold and silver but these standards were abandoned (first in 1933 by President Roosevelt for U.S. citizens, then in 1971 by President Nixon for everyone else), so today our money is backed by nothing but promises (and debt). Thomas Greco, Jr., a community economist and author of New Money for Healthy Communities states that, "The proper kind of money used in the right circumstances is a liberating tool that can allow the fuller expression of human creativity. Money has not lived up to its potential as a liberator because it has been perverted by the monopolization of its creation and by politically manipulating its distribution which makes it available to the favored few and scarce for everyone else."

l A Bibliographic Guide to Alternatives This edition of the Bulletin examines three growing economic movements that provide reasons for optimism and offer platforms for political action. Alternative sustainable development, fair trade, and alternative trade agreements are areas in which non-governmental organization, citizens, and activists have demonstrated successes that can reverse the devastating effects of fifty years of misdirected macroeconomic policies. Small gains they may be, but these initiatives are but a genesis for future possibility. If these efforts are to have a profound impact on the planet, they must be supported and encouraged by the actions of a growing number of people. This issue offers an overview and an extensive but by no means all-inclusive list of resources, original source materials, and analysis that will inform and provide opportunities for individual and group action to profoundly change the current state of trade and development.
    Alternative Sustainable Development
The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were founded at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in July 1944 at the first United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference. The economists and world leaders who were the architects of those two institutions were motivated by the belief that the potential for world economic growth was virtually without limits. The World Bank and the IMF would provide the funding that would steer developing countries toward full modernization, industrialization, and sustainable long-term economic development. Sustained economic growth and unrestricted free trade would benefit everyone, thus reducing or even eliminating poverty.
