From the Desk of Bishop Kettler
The fifty days of Lent are a time when our people are willing and anxious to do some things special. The most important thing we can do as their ministers is to encourage this participation and offer them opportunities or suggestions about what they might do.
I suggest activities that center on the three main themes of Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.
Some examples:
PRAYER
1. Special Family Prayer every day - perhaps at meal time. 2. Additional personal prayer every day - 10 minutes of prayer and 10 minutes of Sacred Scripture reading. 3. Attendance at some daily Masses. Resolving to attend all of the Holy Week Liturgies. 4. Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance) at least once during Lent. 5. Attend parish Stations of the Cross. 6. Say the rosary every day (including the new set of Mysteries of the Rosary).
FASTING
1. Eat no meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent (abstinence). 2. Do not eat between meals and eat smaller meals on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (fast). 3. Do some personal fasting: give up something (food, TV, etc.); eating less, not eating between meals or that night time snack, using Wednesdays and Fridays as special days for fasting.

Governor Presents Grant to Challenger Learning Center
WV Governor Cecil Underwood presented the Challenger Learning Center (CLC) $50,000 in state funds Wednesday, September 9. According to Nancy Sturm, education director at the CLC, the grant money will be used in three areas:
    • To develop a pilot distance learning program for southern West Virginia schools.
    • Train more than 100 teachers at the West Virginia Science Teachers Association in October.
    • Subsidize missions for West Virginia schools.
Sturm thanked Underwood and the state legislators for their commitment to educational programs in West Virginia. "This will allow the Challenger Learning Center to establish a pilot program to link classrooms in the southern part of the state with our facility. This program will allow those students, who might not otherwise have the chance, to fly a mission without ever leaving their school," Sturm said. Joining Underwood were senators and delegates from the First Senatorial District. They included: Senators Andy McKenzie, Ed Bowman and Jeff Kessler; as well as Delegates Gil White, Tal Hutchins, Tim Ennis, Roy Givens and Scott Varner.
