She may be a medal threat in the women's Olympic triathlon in Sydney, but it's her 10,000-metre race on the track 11 days later that really has her pumped. In 1949, the San Diego Velodrome hosted the Senior National Championships. In 1952, San Diego native (and current SDVA board member) Harry Backer represented the United States at the Olympic Games. The current velodrome was constructed in 1976 and is located in the Morley Field Sports Complex of Balboa Park. Four years later, the velodrome was the site of the Senior National Championships/Olympic Trials.

East Side Wheelmen History The East Side Wheelmen Bicycle Racing Club was formed in the 1930's by Fred "Cappy" Capicchioni, an immigrant from San Marino. Many people in the cycling community referred to Cappy as "Mr. Bicycling. Cappy and his wife, Mary, were instrumental in developing the United States Cycling Federation. They were also instrumental in bringing a world-class velodrome to Colorado Springs for the training of track cyclists. In the 1970's and 1980's, the East Side Wheelmen served to nurture Olympic athletes such as Steve Hegg, Rory O'Reilly, Rebecca Twigg, Cindy Olavarri, Eric Heiden and Mark Gorski.
