The occupation of Cyprus was effected peacefully and on 22 July 1878 the first High Commissioner, Sir Garnett Woolsley The development of the population of Cyprus in the four decades which followed the British occupation presents certain demographic and ethnological trends which substantially lead to the formation of the population features of modern Cyprus. This development emanates from the reliable figures of the official censuses of the Brifish authorities, which were collected every ten years commencing from 1881. On total, the population of Cyprus presents a steadily rising trend. So, in 1881 the population reached the figure of 185,630, in 1891 209,286, in 1901 237,022 and in 1911 274,108. The first signs of undisputed human activity can be traced back to the 8th millennium BC when the first settlements are encountered. Vestiges of such early communities are found all over the island, like at Khirokitia, Kalavasos-Tenta, Apostolos Andreas-Kastros, Phrenaros, Petra tou Limniti etc. Neolithic Cypriots built circular houses with small undressed stones for the lower structures and sun-dried mudbricks and clay for the middle and superstructure. The daily life of the people in those neolithic villages was spent in farming, hunting, animal husbandry and the lithic industry, while women were engaged in spindling and weaving cloths, in addition to their probable participation in other works as well. The lithic industry was the most individual feature of this aceramic culture and innumerable stone vessels made of grey andesite have been discovered during excavations. The Greek settlement of Cyprus began during the Iron Age in the 2nd millennium BC with the establishment of city-states by the Mycenaeans and Achaeans. Greek culture established itself on the island and was able to withstand the vicissitudes of subsequent foreign domination by the Assyrians (8th-6th centuries BC), the Egyptians (560-540 BC) and the Persians (540-332 BC). Alexander the Great put an end to Persian rule of the island in 330 BC. Cyprus was ruled by Alexander’s Ptolemy descendant dynasty from 323 to 30 BC and then became a province of the Roman Empire from 30 BC to 330 AD. Cyprus was converted to Christianity by Saints Paul and Barnabas around 45 AD. Cyprus was also a province of the Greek speaking Byzantine Empire. The Ottoman Empire captured Cyprus from the Venetians in 1571. The Hellenic awareness of the people of Cyprus can be attested to by their identification with and support for the Greek War of Independence during which the Archbishop of Cyprus was executed for supporting Hellenic independence. In 1878, the Ottoman Empire ceded Cyprus to Great Britain so that Russian ambitions in the Mediterranean could be checked. During World War one, Cyprus was formally annexed by Great Britain as a result of the Ottoman Empire's decision to become an ally of Germany. In 1923, British rule over Cyprus was formalized by the Treaty of Lausanne while Turkey formally renounced all claims to Cyprus.

CYPRUS Cyprus been revealed through archeological work as having been inhabited for at least 10,000 years. Long an important part of eastern Mediterranean trade, Cyprus saw civilizations come and go: the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Byzantines, even the English passed through during the Crusades as Richard the Lion-Hearted established a crusader entity at the end of the 12th century. In 1489, Venice took over Cyprus and then came the Ottomans in 1571. Placed under British control by the Congress of Berlin in 1878, it was annexed by Britain in 1914. Eleven years later, Britain made Cyprus a formal colony. Tensions between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots have led to violence at various points, post World War II. In 1974, Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupied the northern 40% of the island. The occupation has continued, though the international community has not seen fit to recognize the area's self-proclaimed status as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (1983). The rest of the island has prospered with reasonable political stability, foreign investment, and tourism.

Goverment TURKISH MILITARY INTERVENTION of 1974 After 1967 some hopes arose that a compromise on separate municipalities could be achieved in negotiations between Glafcos Clerides and Rauf Denktas and certainly agreement came close, but the Makarios government could not accept de jure separateness, which would have denied the principle of the unitary, if bi-communal, state. Inter-communal strife was also overshadowed during this period by a serious rift on the Greek side, between Makarios and the enosist National Front supported by the Greek junta. Makarios had now become an obstacle to enosis. An attempt was made on his life, and Grivas returned in 1971 to head a new organi- sation, EOKA-B, with Makarios, rather than the Turkish-Cypriots, in its sight. Makarios was told from Athens to dismiss his foreign minister and to regard Athens as the National Centre. Makarios rallied supporters successfully against attempts to remove him. He was still popular in Cyprus. Matters became worse when a new junta came to power in September 1973, and there was less relief from rightist pressure than might have been expected when Grivas died suddenly in January 1974. The pressure mounted until a coup in July 1974 led by a `hammer of the Turks' Nicos Sampson, overthrew Makarios, who managed to flee the country via a British base. For Turkey this raised the spectre of Greek control of Cyprus.
