Czech Republic
A personal view
Spring 1995
The Czech Republic was a surprise, and a very pleasant one. Gil and I had some experiences in Russia and Eastern Europe before the "fall of Communism." Interesting, Communist countries might be, but fun? Not usually. So what did we look forward to when the chance came for a business trip to the Czech Republic? We figured it would be overpriced and undervalued. It would be gray and run-down. Western style hotels would be hard to find and too expensive for what they were. The toilets probably wouldn't work. Service personnel would be surly. We had read that the food was poor quality - all pork and fatty. We would have a rental car insured to go to Poland. Would we find the unleaded gas it needed? Guidebooks said maybe not. So what did we find? We found a vibrant, friendly country that is ready for Western tourism. We found modern gas stations plentiful, as well as new motels along the major routes. The roads were in excellent shape, even the ones shown as secondary on the maps. (Most were two lane, so in the tourist season going might be slow.) The food was not gourmet, but it was inexpensive and quite acceptable. The wine was inexpensive and tasty (so much so that we bought it by the bottle instead of by the glass!). The beer was cheap and excellent. Except for hotels in Prague, accommodations were reasonably priced, and reasonable in quality. There were many rooms for rent in homes along the main roads as well (bed and breakfast or zimmer-style).

REPORT ON THE CULTURE OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC The Czech language
The official language spoken in the Czech Republic is Czech . It belongs to the group of west Slavonic languages (together with Polish or Slovak). Some German words are used in colloquial Czech (terms in handicrafts, or construcion). Nowadays, a very strong influence of English (e.g. in technics, economics or entertainment) is noticeable. Spoken Czech is a bit different from the language children learn at school. You can also recognize where people are from according to their accent or the dialect they speak. The best examples of a perfect use of the Czech language are the books by Karel Èapek (1890 - 1938, world-famous journalist, writer, dramatist, creator of the word "robot"), Bohumil Hrabal (1914 - 1997, writer), Jaroslav Seifert (1901 - 1986, poet, Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1984), or Jaroslav Hašek (1883 - 1923, author of the famous satirical novel about the good soldier Svejk), to mention only a few of the best Czech writers. Education
School attendance
is compulsory for all children between 6 (7) and 15. Primary and secondary schools are state schools (tuition fee is not paid) and private schools (tuition fee must be paid, it is often very high). There are also church schools (free of charge).

The Czech Republic offers a fascinating social and cultural setting for service-learning because the nation is in an important period of transition from Soviet Communism to independence and privatization of many political, social, educational and cultural institutions. You will gain insight into the complexities of the Czech Republic by directly encountering the problems, challenges and attempted solutions brought about by these changes. Prague
The program is located in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, and one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Located in the heart of Europe on the Vltava River, it has been a center of trade, political life, culture, religion, and learning for over a thousand years. In the medieval and Renaissance periods it played a major role as the central city in historic Bohemia and as the capital for a time of the Holy Roman Empire. The famous reformer, Jan Hus, was rector of Charles University, which hosts the program. In the 20th century, Prague was a focus of resistance to Soviet domination of Central Europe. Today, it is a lively cultural center with dozens of daily concerts (at low or no cost), excellent museums and historic sites including the Prague castle, opera, theater, bookstores and bustling cafes and restaurants. Prague is a living museum of European architecture, including Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau.

JUDr. Josef Slanina The OSA is supposed to collect payment for the use of music and remunerate those whose music was used. This illusion has been intensified by the courts of the Czech Republic through finding chaos in the legal basis of OSA and verdicts on the legal non-existence of OSA. Nothing is stopping P. Janda, P Chrastina, L Andrst, JUDr. Slanina and other administrators from annually collecting hundreds of millions of Czech crowns in addition to surpassing the OSA NOSTRA scandal (OSA-administered misappropriation of artists´ royalties) through "protecting" the non-payment of royalties and destroying the name, prestige and maintenance of an artist who demands that rights and ethics are observed, and deliberately admonishing contempt over his alleged actions, which, for these purposes, they themselves completely invented.

Czech Republic ( Ceska Republika, Cesko ) Country Code: cz
Flag of the Czech Republic Background:
After World War II, Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution."
On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Now a member of NATO, the Czech Republic has moved toward integration in world markets, a development that poses both opportunities and risks.
