Traditional Dance in Greek Culture
by Yvonne Hunt
The book examines dance in its cultural setting as a vital, living element; a segment of Hellenic culture which is largely neglected in the broader context. The specific focus of the book is on the role dance plays in the lives of the Greeks, the changes brought about by an ever-evolving society and its future position in Greek culture. Dance genres and styles are presented by geographical regions, i.e., Dodekanisa, Kyklades, Kriti, Roumeli, Makedonia, etc. In addition, various customs in which dance plays a central or important roleapokreas, celebrations, anastenaria, Lazarines, tzamalaare also discussed. An entire chapter is devoted to improvisation and leading the dance as well as a chapter on the naming of the dances. The latter seeks to clarify a subject which can mystify both Greek and non-Greek alike. As it is difficult to separate dance from music another chapter examines the music, musicians and traditional instruments. A catalogue of traditional instruments as well as combinations used in various regional ensembles is included. In his foreward to the book the noted ethnomusicologist, Markos Dragoumis, director of the Music Folklore Archives of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies in Athens (publisher of the book), writes "The presentation of the material shows a good balance between practical and theoretical information and the reading is enjoyable." It "...whets the appetite of the novice to take the first step towards becoming a dancer and allows the knowledgeable to acquire a deeper understanding of the subtle art of Greek dancing." Through this book both Greeks and non-Greeks will increase their awareness of this profound expression of Hellenic culture. Hopefully they will also recognize the urgency of preservation and documentation before it disappears entirely or is swallowed up in rapidly-encroaching foreign elements.

The dance tradition of Greece was disseminated to Europe where it became accentuated with elements of theatre and ballet. The Greek dance is combined with unique forms of cultural expression, music and poetry, each claiming its unique identity and significance in the ensemble of an integrated dance performance. The style of Greek dance is reminiscent of the rules of European dance (in terms of steps and dance tempi). However the morphic characteristics of the Greek dance are presented in a kaleidoscope of expression. The expressive efficiency and plasticity of the human body are dominant, particularly in the movements of the upper body. The torso, hands and wrist are instrumental in the reenactment of dramatic, tragic and lyric motifs. The face mirrors emotions that are in tune with music and rhythm. Ancient Greece drove a sharp distinction between the Apollonian dance and the Dionysiac dance. The former – the

History
Founded by Ruby Ginner in 1923 as the Association of Teachers of the Revived Greek Dance, it became affiliated to the ISTD in 1951, combining with the ISTD Greek Branch. Aims
This form of movement provides immense enjoyment and an opportunity for creativity. The student also acquires balance and control, relaxation, elevation, clarity of line, grace and ease of movement and the development of musical understanding. The more advanced work allows for a greater study of the visual arts, literature and mythology and develops the various different aspects of this work which includes not only lyrical dance but also athletic, pyrrhic, bacchic, choric, ritual and tragic, all of which can be applied to the world of today. It is undoubtedly one of the best methods of teaching stage movement and dramatic expression in dance form. Syllabus
The training is set out in the syllabus of the Classical Greek Dance Association Faculty, beginning with graded tests for children, and continuing to examinations for students and teachers from Pre-Elementary to Fellowship. There are also medal tests awarded for performance to candidates over the age of eight years. Activities
Every two years a Classical Greek Dance Festival is held for dancers ranging from children of seven years to students and adults. There are also awards for original choreography and improvisation. The Ruby Ginner Awards (for solo dancers) are held annually for all standards. Holiday courses and refresher courses are arranged each year.

Greek curses believed to doom the recipients to become Vampires after Death
1. May the earth no receive him!
2. May the ground not consume him!
3. May the earth not digest thee!
4. May the black earth spew thee up!
5. Mayest thou remain incorrupt!
6. May the earth not loose thee! (i.e., may the body not decompose.)
7. May the ground reject thee!
8. Mayest thou become in the grave like rigid wood!
9. May the ground reject him wholly! According to Freudian disciple Ernest Jones, these curses maybe undone by the person who may have unadvertently uttered them in moments of anger. This is customarily attended to on the deathbed of the individual who invoked them. "A vessel of water is brought to the bedside and he throws into it a handful of salt, and when this is dissolved the sick man sprinkles with the lymph all those who are present saying, 'As this salt dissolves so may my curses dissolve.' This ceremony absolves all persons whom he may have cursed in his lifetime from the evil of a ban which after death he would no longer be able to revoke."

Yes! Music suggestions listed below...
What about using Turkish music?
This can be tricky...it's possible to offend someone.
Response 1
"First of all, don't think because the Greeks and Turks seem to always be at odds politically, that they find each others' music offensive. I've found, and please, this is only my observation, that Greeks and Turks have cross-polinated so much that they either claim or simply just like the same music. "For example, there is a new, nice CD out now called "Greatest Turkish Belly Dance Hits", or something similar wich I think will be easy for you to find. If has a picture of a very thin dancer in a pink costume with a scarf on her head... Here's the sticky pointthis CD has a number of songs on it that I've heard played by Greek bands for Greek line dancing. A lot of great Turkish music comes from the city of Izmir, which, until about 1923, was largely inhabited by Greeks, who called the city Smyrna. When the Turks expelled their ethnic Greeks in 1923 (and the Greeks expelled their ethnic Turks at the same time), these Greeks took their music with them. The Greeks from Smyrna moved to Athens and Piraeus, where they developed an incredible honky-tonk type of music called Rembetika. (There are a number of Rembetika CDs that are available in chain music stores, but I'd hesitate to use them in a belly dance routine.)

GREEK DANCING THROUGH THE CENTURIES
"...Nowhere else the Greeks' distinctive character has been more completely expressed than in the choral dance.
When the Oriental peoples arrive at an art form of the choral dance, they extract the ultimate from its ecstatic nature: the individual mind and will of the dancer are extinguished, everything personal is wiped out, and he moves in strict conformity like a puppet controlled by the strings of an invisible master.
But when the Greek sculptors carved in marble the lineaments of a choral dance, the observer admires the joyous rhythm which binds together, into a harmony more than personal, movements that arise from an inner compulsion and accord with the law of the dancer's own body."
