The material to be presented at the upcoming festival will offer a unique perspective on traditions and customs of the Easter period from various regions of Greece. There is an abundance of folk dances, songs and traditions prior to, during and after the Easter period. The Orpheus Dance Troupe, with the help of the visiting artists, hopes to bring these traditions to life during this event. The Orpheus Dance Troupe has been preparing for this event for some time and members have been able to research and practice a wide range of material from various areas in Greece. One example is the traditions and songs of the Easter “Lazarines”, women primarily from the northern regions of Greece who sing and dance characteristic folk tunes during the Saturday of Lazaros as well as the next day, Palm Sunday.

Brandy Williams Papers. greek RITUAL dance. Hunt, Yvonne Traditional dance in greekCulture, Centre for Asia Minor Studies Music Folklore Archive, Athens 1996.
http://www.speakeasy.org/~bwilliam/greekdance.html
GREEK RITUAL DANCE Ancient Pagans dance across Classical vases holding graceful folds of robes in their hands, frozen by the artist in a moment of bending and leaping and twirling. How inspiring they are! Many a modern looks to the vases and says, "I will reconstruct these dances!" The most famous of these, of course, was Isadora Duncan, whose simple dances in homemade togas entranced Europe in her lifetime. Modern Pagans long to recover the ancient Pagan functions of the dance. Greeks, of course, never ceased to dance, even while converting to Christianity. Some of the ancient meanings of the dance remain-certain dances are performed during the spring with clear fertility symbology. The social implications have changed little. Dance provides a meeting place for men and women, an emotional expression of community spirit, a form of cultural bonding that identifies this person as a member of this village, this country. But modern Greeks no longer dance in honor of the Gods and Goddesses, and modern Pagans long to do so. How might we go about this? In one sense, reconstruction is impossible. Ultimately, lacking actual videotape of eighth-century dances, it's impossible to say with certainty that we are performing an eighth century dance.

In a passage of Pindar, Apollo is called the dancer; ( and there is a Greek line extant which represents Jupiter himself in the very act of dancing ). The choir of the children regulated their motions by those of the men, and all danced at the same time, singing hymns in praise of Apollo . Dance Marathon '99
"All we are asking- is give kids a Dance"
The second annual NMSU Dance Marathon was to be held January 30, 1999. Unfortunately, a lack of enthusiasm, participation, and organization led to the event being indefinitely postponed. Since that time the Panhellenic Council has unanimously voted to discontinue Dance Marathon. The Inter-Fraternity Council has appointed a committee to develop a new all-Greek fundraising project to benefit Children's Miracle Network and Memorial Medical Center. Details of the proposal will be made available at the earliest possible time. Have any ideas on what sort of event we should do If so, contact any of the committee members, Larry Cosentino, Herb Crosby, Tim Hakim, or Andy Kalin, at the Greek Affairs Office at 646-7218 or e-mail gogreek@nmsu.edu One of the great characteristics of CMN, is that all of the funds raised locally stay local. That means that every penny that the students raise here at New Mexico State University this year and every year will benefit the kids at Memorial Medical Center. Some other info about CMN- CMN hospitals such as Memorial Medical Center of Las Cruces pride themselves on providing primary care for all children, regardless of ailment or the family's ability to pay. Funds from the all-Greek project will benefit children who suffer from: muscular dystrophy, AIDS, burns, cancer, cystic fibrosis, abuse, leukemia, heart disease, birth defects, and accidents.

Traditional Greek Dance
The performing arts are tools that a community can use to build pride in a cultural heritage. The Greek Orthodox Church in Salt Lake City supports three levels of folkdance performing groups, the Junior and Senior Greek Orthodox Youth Association (GOYA), and the college-age Dionysius Dancers. These groups teach Greek customs and traditions to the youth who act as cultural ambassadors for the local community when they perform at festivals and celebrations. There are also several groups of musicians who play for Greek social and folk dancing in Utah.

When Greeks migrate for employment, family reasons or sheer adventure they are never alienated by their Greekness. Even Diaspora -born second- or third-generation children find themselves inextricably connected with their ancestral land. Elena Paparizou, 17, and Nikos Panaglotidis, 21, born in Sweden of Greek parents, have turned their Greek-connection into musical success by blending current popular Greek tunes with intoxicating dance-pop beats. Known as Antique , the duo first hit the Swedish top 5 in August 1999 with a Greek dance-pop tune called "Opa Opa", which climbed to the top 10 in all of Scandinavia and sold gold in just five weeks. "All I remember after that," says Elena, "is being in a car or aeroplane and travelling around promoting ourselves. We were in Greece late last year where we appeared in a couple of dance clubs in Athens and Thessaloniki and travelled throughout Europe and as far as Canada, Cyprus, Albania and Beirut."
