DANCES OF GREECE
with The Hellenic Traditional Arts Institute and
dancers from The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross In Greece, folk dance has always been a part of community life, playing an important role in various civic, religious and performance events. Dance is also central to celebrations of significant life events—birth, marriage, death, church holidays, name days, and the like. The Hellenic Traditional Arts Institute , which has researched Greek dances, costumes, and festivals for more than twenty-five years, shares this heritage with us in today’s performance. They are joined by young dancers from the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross Program Date : May 12, 2001

They are proud, stalwart dances, performed in a semi-circle. When danced in ethnic costumes they are very colourful and inspiring. The best known of these dances are the kalamatianos and the tsamikos. Kalamatianos The kalamatianos, said to be of ancient origin, is undoubtedly one of the most popular dances in Greece. It is danced throughout the country by both men and women. As its name indicates, the dance originated from the province of Kalamata in Southern Greece, where the world-famous kalamata olives come from (and which are the only olives we use at The kalamatianos Theo's Greek Taverna !). The kalamatianos is danced in a trailing semi-circle to the unfamiliar rhythm of 7/8. It consists of twelve basic steps upon which all the variations are based. The variations are usually performed only by the first, or lead, dancer, who is at the head of the line on the extreme right, facing into the semi-circle.

"This book offers a thorough and detailed review of the evidence for the function of dance to 'express divine adoration and human festivity in Greek culture.'" New England Classical Newsletter and Journal In private and in public life, the ancient Greeks danced to express divine adoration and human festivity. They danced at feasts and choral competitions, at weddings and funerals, in observance of the cycles of both nature and human existence. Formal and informal dances marked the rhythms of life and death. In Dance and Ritual Play in Greek Religion , Steven Lonsdale looks at how the Greeks themselves regarded the act of dance, and how dance and related forms of ritual play in Greek religious festivals served a wide variety of functions in Greek society. The act of worship, he explains, often implied engaging in collective rites regulated by playful behavior, the most common forms of which were group hymns and choral dances.

United Kingdom Classical Greek Dance Enters The Next Millennium Classical Greek Dance has been around since the early years of this century. Created by Ruby Ginner, a British pioneer of new dance forms, the method has its roots in the art, writings and philosophies of the Classical Greeks. It encompasses all styles, from lyric to athletic, tragic to phyrric. Based on simple and everyday body movements, such as walking, running and skipping - the dance style can be performed by anybody, without the need for a physical 'type' as demanded by other forms of dance. However, this is not to say that the method is easy or aesthectically dull. The result of studying this form of dance is a trained body which produces pure poetry in motion, requiring both bodily strength and control as well as a musicality and sense of drama/quality rarely found in mainstream dance. Classical Greek Dance is now ready to step into the new millennium. As we do so, we are planning a number of events to raise the profile of this dance style, in the hope of promoting it to a new audience. For more information, please e-mail the above address.
