Indian Dance
Mohiniyattam
MOHINIYATTAM is one of the most lyrical classical dance traditions, originating from Kerala, the land of palm trees, backwaters, caparisoned elephants, Kathakali and Koodiyattam, and innumerable folk arts and festivals; that is God's own land. Its movements are soft and graceful (lasya oriented) and soaked in feminine grace. They have been likened to the sway of palm leaves in the gentle breeze. Mohini means enchantress and attam means dance; Mohiniyattam is the dance of the enchantress traditionally performed by women.
The tradition of Mohiniyattam can be traced back to the 16th-17th century, a period generally considered as the golden era of arts and literature in the history of Kerala. A few scholars consider Balaramabharatam authored by Karthika Thirunal Balarama Varma of the Swathithirunal family, which in fact is an elaboration of the 6th to 10th chapters of the Natyashastra, as an authentic treatise on Mohiniyattam. The murals and sculptures of the 18th century in some temples and palaces too depict the concept of Mohini. The earliest known textual reference to Mohiniyattam is found in the commentary on the Vyavaharamala, a Sanskrit text written by Mazhamangalam Namboodiri during the 16th century. In the commentary believed said to be authored by a Brahmin scholar who migrated to Kerala, the word for "dancers" was translated as "Mohiniyattam artist etc". Another reference on Mohiniyattam can be found in the Ottanthullal (a semi-classical and semi-folk dramatic art form of Kerala) script Ghoshayatra, authored by Kunchan Nambiar during the second half of the 18th century.

Rathna Kumar is Director of Anjali , Center for Indian Performing Arts, Houston, Texas, USA and Artistic Director, the Anjali Dance Company besides being the Artistic Director, SAMSKRITI Society for Indian Performing Arts (a nonprofit organization). Indian Dance in the Diaspora "In thy dance, Divine Dancer, freedom finds its image and dreams their forms. Its cadence weaves the threads of things and unwinds them for ages; Charms the atom's rebellion into beauty, gives rhythm to the symphony of the stars; thrills life with pain, And churns up existence into surging joys and sorrows" - Rabindranath Tagore There has always been something mystical about Indian dance, adding to its allure and beauty, and captivating the hearts of audiences all over the world. It is this mysticism that attracted the attention of western dancers Ruth St.Denis and Ted Shawn, of Anna Pavlova, Isadora Duncan and Maurice Bejart, and influenced their choreography. But it was Uday Shankar and Ram Gopal, two innovative exponents of Indian dance, who took the western world by storm with their combination of good looks and artistic talents, and gave Indian dance a permanent place in the western hemisphere.

Crossroads Desi Mind ... Women Indian Classical Dance Has Lost Spiritual Purpose
There is much to say about the Indian classical dances about its lucidity, expression, etc. Yet many and most of our dancers forget why they are dancing and for what purpose they are dancing. The competition for performing, the glamour, commercialism, image, fame and all that nonsense has cropped into the dances since fifty years back when it was first brought from the temple. A dance like ours containing divine and Godly verses does not need people like critics to judge a dancer. Any dancer, whether they are veterans or superstars or a learner should be treated with equal respect as an expression of divine. Many dancers cling frantically to an organization and the organizers in order to get performance opportunities. In return they are expect to promote these organizations and bring up the organization's image in the name of dance; thereby contributing to politics, rivalry between

Its richness and complexity is as old as the early Indus Valley civilizations of Harappa and Mohenjodaro, which were established around 2400 BC. The Hindus continue to believe in the multitude of gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon. India is a blend of diverse cultures and religions that have continuously influenced Indian mythology. You Can Advertise Here India unveils a kaleidoscope of various cultures and religions. These have had substantial influence on the early writings, including Indian mythology. Prominent among these was the Hindu religion. The Hindus believed that the Universe was a single entity and called it Brahmin. This soon came to be equated with a masculine form of God, named Brahma. He was the creator of the Universe. Later, two other Gods joined to form the Trinity. They were, Vishnu- the protector, and Shiva- the destroyer. The Vedic age, which belongs to the period of the Harappan and Mohenjodaro civilizations, established around 2400 BC, has given an entire body of literature to the world. The hymns sung then were collectively called the Vedas. The Vedic Age is when Hinduism actually began. The Vedic Gods were led by Indra. They got their strength from the drink- Soma, a form of ambrosia.

Birju Maharaj dances with his eyebrows and silent-movie eyes. Raja Reddy's huge long hands seem to grow in the dark, and as for Malaviki Sarukkai, she is a goddess. Participants in a three-day season of classical Indian dance, these subcontinental performers provided striking contrast with the rest of the international festival's dance programme. Part talk/demonstration, part performance, each of the six presentations looked at one regional technique. The set-up was the same for all. The stage was bare save for a candle, simple lighting and a low platform to the side for the musicians. The dance, much of it solo work, highlighted contrasts and similarities between styles. For an audience perhaps not especially familiar with the complex patterns of rhythms and harmonies that are inseparable from Indian dance, the live music was added value - all of it fine, some exceptional.
