The analysis shows that the most significant parameters are the water/binder ratio and the total air content. The mix composition also has some influence on the frost resistance, i.e. fly ash tends to undermine the frost resistance, whereas silica fume improves the frost resistance. Surprisingly, no relation was found between frost resistance and spacing factor, but the neural network ascribes some importance to the specific surface of the air void structure. However, the neural network analysis is uncertain and should be followed by a statistical analysis to test the significance of the findings. F AMILY REUNION Peter Amstrong-See SOUVENIRS Kirkemosen, 29.01.2002 Dear family and friends, A quick call to the TV station, thinking that the interviewing journalist, Ulla Terkelsen, a well known newsperson in Denmark, will no doubt be able to provide Vera's address. "Ms. Terkelsen lives on the road", I'm told, - "she's difficult to reach. Best is you send us a letter, she gets her mail sent to her address in Berlin twice a week". So I write a note and drive down to the village to drop it the mailbox. Then we start thinking. Mama said Vera was introduced as a retired Prague journalist. Simon Wiesenthal was mentioned. We soon had found the telephone number of the Jewish community in Prague, where of course they had Vera's number and next day the two cousins were on the phone, attempting, hopelessly, to bridge a gap of fifty years. Vera had told Mama about Hanka, that right after the war she had gone to make a life in Israel, together with her Hanus. Hanka and Hanus also have two married children and six grandchildren and had come to visit the Prague family a few times. Of course they had to telephone Hanka right away. Hanka was dizzy with joy and she and Mama are writing to one another at least once a month now. Hanka and Hanus would also come to Prague to attend our reunion, an added bonus. The weeks and months went rapidly and before we knew it, we were well into July. All terribly excited, of course, just to think of all the new cousins named Hana, Hanka, Hanus, Jan, Jana and Jarda, whom we were about to meet. Apparently also the Czech branch of our family adheres, as we do, to the tradition never to innovate when it comes to names. You know the saying, never change a winning combination. When we find a good name, we stick to it for generations, passing it on to our children and even marrying people with those names, just to keep the confusion going.

Background Aim The aim of this project is to identify a large number of SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) with relationship to selected diseases and production traits in cattle and pig. It has been estimated that there is an average of 0.5-1.0 heterozygous SNPs per 1000 base pairs in the human genome. In domestic animals we expect a slightly lower number of SNPs because of intensive breeding programmes which cause a decrease in genetic variation. But the number of SNPs still exceeds other types of genetic markers. Since SNPs are found in such large numbers, they are an ideal marker-type for characterization of multigene traits. Research Outline Initially, a number of genetic markers with relationship to specific traits in cattle and pig must be identified. For this purpose a heterogenous animal material, spanning different breeds and different physiological traits, has been selected and this panel of animals is scanned for genetic polymorphisms. On the Typological Evolution of the Danish Morphological System Prof. Vulf Plotkin, D.Sc. vulf@iimath.com ABSTRACT: The highly analyticized Danish language has developed a morphological feature found in other formerly synthetic languages undergoing analyticization, namely composite word-forms, in which the auxiliary and the lexical element are joined as the two parts of a grammatical compound. Such compounds are built in Danish with the postfixed definite article -en/-et and the Present tense marker -er , which explains the retention of the stød in their first components. Like any participant in a compound, these auxiliaries are also used as separate words, namely the indefinite article en/et and the link-verb er , respectively. The positionally determined variability of the correlated grammatical meanings conveyed by these auxiliaries is in full accordance with the basic features of analytical typology. 1. BACKGROUND The evolution of both Germanic and Romance languages in the past two millennia was determined by a typological trend towards analyticization. Given the number and diversity of the languages involved and the vastness of the area they cover, this trend has naturally found a variety of linguistic manifestations, some of which characterize each of the two language groups as a whole, while others are confined to certain groupings within them or to individual languages. There are also significant differences, both between the two language groups and within them, concerning dynamic interaction between the diametrically opposite typological trends of analyticization and syntheticization. Those trends are in fact vectors directed towards the two poles of a typological continuum, in which both forces are never completely at rest. In a predominantly synthetic language analytical formations will emerge from time to time, but they might fail to gain sufficient ground in the synthetic paradigms and will then undergo gradual erosion, ending up as inflected forms with the auxiliary reduced to an affix. A strong trend towards re-syntheticization is sometimes observed even in a language that has gone far in abandoning its former synthetic features and has reached a rather high degree of analyticization.

A high-resolution subdivision of the chalk yields new information and better understanding of the depositional environment along with the possibility of an advantageous correlation. This new knowledge and possibility may be beneficial in reservoir geology where it can be exploited to enhance oil production from existing Danish oil fields. Petrophysical properties of a 34 m (well MFB-7) and an 11 m (well M-1X) long successions of Maastrichtian chalk from the Dan Field were examined for cyclicity by spectral analysis (i.e. FFT and a new method developed in this study). Magnetic susceptibility plug measurements, together with the neutron porosity and the natural gamma radiation well log data were analysed, and all three properties contain a consistent cyclicity at c . 2 m wavelength.
