S OCIOLOGY OF D EATH AND D YING
It has been claimed that one can never look directly at the sun nor at one's own death. And yet, throughout the history of mankind, both have been the enduring themes of myth and religion, science and magic, curiosity and fear. From our late twentieth century vantage point we find that as the sun is understood as being the source of life in the natural order, so death is becoming recognized as the central dynamism underlying the life, vitality, and structure of the social order. Death is the muse of our religions, philosophies, political ideologies, arts and medical technologies. It sells newspapers and insurance policies, invigorates the plots of our television programs, andjudging from our dependency on fossil fuels (84.5% of all U.S. energy consumption in 1995)even powers our industries. It is the barometer by which we measure the adequacy of social life, such as when we compare cross-cultural death and life expectancy rates to gauge social progress, compare national homicide rates to infer the stability of social structures, or compare death rates of different social groups to ascertain social inequalities . In fact, perhaps the very first evidence of

WHEN THE PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL NEEDS OF A TERMINALLY ILL PERSON ARE MET, THE JOURNEY TOWARDS DEATH CAN BECOME AN ENRICHING EXPERIENCE THAT GIVES MEANING AND COMPLETENESS TO LIFE. Palliative care is a specialized form of health care that meets the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of both an individual facing a life-threatening illness and his or her loved ones. With palliative care, treating physical, emotional and spiritual suffering is as essential as treating the underlying disease, regardless of whether the disease is curable or not. When the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of a terminally ill person are met, the journey towards death can become an enriching experience that gives meaning and completeness to life. By helping people to make choices about their treatment, what services they need and where they want to be cared for, they are given control and dignity at a time when they most need it.

P ERSONAL I MPACTS OF D EATH
When a person is born, we rejoice, and when they're married, we jubilate,
but when they die, we try to pretend that nothing happened.
Margaret Mead Odd as it sounds, there can be little question that some deaths are better than others. People cross-culturally have always made invidious distinctions between good deaths and bad. Compare, for instance, crooner Bing Crosby's sudden death following eighteen rounds of his beloved golf with the slow motion, painful expiration of an eighty-year-old diabetic. Bedridden following the amputation of his leg, the old man eventually began slipping in and out of consciousness. This continues over a period of years, exhausting the emotional, physical. and financial resources of his family. The essence of a "good death" thus involves the needs of the dying (such as coming at the end of full and completed lives, and when death is preferred to continued existence) as well as those of their survivors and the broader society. Whereas the prevalence of unanticipated and premature deaths led to preindustrial cultures to focus death fears on individuals' postmortem fates, the death fears of modern cultures are more likely to focus on the processes of dying. Thus contemporary fears of dying involve the anxieties of dying within institutional settings, where often life is structured for the convenience of staff and where residents suffer both physical and psychological pain in their depersonalization. They also involve fears of being victims of advanced Alzheimer's Disease: being socially dead and yet biologically alive. In sum, the dreaded liminality between the worlds of the living and the dead have historically shifted from the period after death to the period preceding it.

Support Group Crossing the Creek a collection of stories about death and dying Kathy's Story Denise's Story The Final Journey wasn't prepared. There was so much that no one ever told me. And because there were components of her death that were not peaceful I was left feeling as if I could have done better.
When my mother's death was at hand, things happened not described in any of the materials I had been given to read. The experience was not peaceful. She didn't see people who had already died or talk of feeling ready. We did not have that one last wonderful talk. Instead she was agitated, restless, anxious, and spoke of nightmares.
One evening I located a support group on the internet for people who were going to lose or had lost a loved one. Groping to make sense of my mother's suffering I told the group of my mother's death. They shared their experiences with me. I can't tell you why or when my healing began but only that hearing others' stories did this for me.
I came to believe that my mother's sudden fight to live was a defense mechanism that we all are programmed to have. We are programmed to survive. If you throw a person who can not swim into a pool they struggle to stay afloat. If you put a pillow over a person's head they struggle to take it off. Even if the person was terminally ill they would struggle. So even though my mother was ready to die, she struggled in the end. It was her last ditch effort to survive.

THE OBSERVER All of us will have to cope with death and dying - our own, our parents', a friend's, or even, tragically, a child's. Yet it is the last taboo - rarely prepared for, usually ignored and mostly happening out of sight in hospitals and old people's homes. THE NATURAL DEATH CENTRE , the educational charity which edited this handbook, believes that all of us should, and can, prepare for our own deaths and those of our friends and loved ones, and that this intense personal experience should as far as possible be under our own control, not that of medical professionals or big institutions.
