Urban greenways and recreational paths have become a vital part of the development plans of many cities, offering an alternative means of transportation as well as recreational opportunities and the green, open spaces that many people want in their neighborhoods. The City Of Delaware (Ohio) Recreation Department, community members, and students and faculty in the Ohio Wesleyan University Department of Geology and Geography have collaborated to develop a detailed proposal for a recreational path system for the City of Delaware. The project involves researching, mapping, and analyzing (using Geographic Information Systems and GPS) a system of bicycle paths that connect neighborhoods, schools, commercial areas, and recreational facilities throughout the city. The City of Delaware Recreational Trails Project has benefited all involved: students are learning GIS and mapping technologies in a 'real-world' application, as well as learning about the trails and urban planning process in general. City residents have received technical and research assistance from OWU faculty and students, enabling them to complete their vision for a comprehensive system of Recreational Trails in the City of Delaware. Finally, the City of Delaware has gained a detailed plan for a project seen as having a very important and positive impact on the quality of life in the City of Delaware.

DUE in class Wednesday, January 22
Exercise Worth: 10 pts
Procedure: 1. Locate a computer with WWW access. Please check OWU's WWW site for information on computer labs you can use if you don't have your own computer. You will need to access the WWW for all the exercises in Geography 222: please let the instructor know if you are having trouble finding a computer to use. 3. Locate the Geography 222 WWW site. 3. Print the exercise (this page) from the WWW browser. 4. On a piece of plain white paper (the back of the printed out exercise) please draw your mental map of the Ohio Wesleyan University area (and beyond - include as much or as little of the world as you want) from memory. Don't just draw (or copy from) a street map! This should be a mental map, not a cartographic map. Take about 20 minutes to draw and annotate (for your instructor's sake) your map. Show as much detail as you can, and remember to focus on making the map accurate in terms of what is

The above map is historically skewed, in that boundaries follow the most modern studies when possible, but where current information is not available the boundaries must often reflect the 1939 LAMSAS data. At certain points the modern and older studies clearly conflict: Schuylkill County with its consistent monophthongization would have been better classified with the Lehigh Valley and Reading in 1939; today, its acceptance of the low back merger shows that it clearly belongs to the Anthracite region.

The Regions of the United States New England The Mid-Atlantic The South The Midwest ... The West Americans often speak of their country as one of several large regions. These regions are cultural units rather than governmental units formed by history and geography and shaped by the economics, literature and folkways that all the parts of a region share. What makes one region different from another? A region's multicultural heritage as well as distinct demographic characteristics like age and occupation also make regions different and special. Within several regions, language is used differently and there are strong dialects. There are also differences in outlook and attitude based on geography. New England has played a dominant role in American history. Until well into the 19th century, New England was the country's cultural and economic center. The earliest European settlers of New England were English Protestants who came in search of religious liberty. They gave the region its distinctive political format town meetings (an outgrowth of meetings held by church elders) in which citizens gathered to discuss issues of the day. Town meetings still function in many New England communities today and have been revived as a form of dialogue in the national political arena. New England is also important for the cultural contribution it has made to the nation. The critic Van Wyck Brooks called the creation of a distinctive American literature, in the first half of the 19th century, "the flowering of New England." Education is another of the region's strongest legacies. The cluster of top-ranking universities and colleges in

Southern end of Route 23 intersecting Bloomfield Avenue (Route 506) in Verona, New Jersey Some people may say that America starts when you cross the Delaware River, but the gateway to America is Route 23 in New Jersey. Route 23 in New Jersey follows a northwest path through the state starting about twelve miles west of New York City. It follows a route almost three hundred years old that winds its way through the forests and farmlands of Northern New Jersey. The area's history includes the ancient home of (Leni-) Lenape and Minsi ( var. , Munsee), one of the earliest European settlements in the "New World", and the beginnings of a country now known as the United States. Today, the region is comprised of suburban communities and protected forest lands. Route 23 in New Jersey begins (or ends, depending on your viewpoint) in the community of Verona, New Jersey between the First and Second Watchung Mountains. At the Junction of Route 506 (Bloomfield Avenue), Route 23 is named Pompton Avenue. Nearby is Caldwell, the birthplace of Grover Cleveland and Orange, the location of the Thomas Edison National Historic site. Bloomfield College, Seton Hall University, Montclair State University and Caldwell College are all located in this general area. A short distance away is Eagle Rock Reservation which has spectacular views of the New York City skyline.

Jointly housed in the colleges of Architecture and Medicine, the Center emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches for research, graduate education, and outreach for designing improved healthcare facilities and communities. The Center's activities cut across different academic departments and colleges, but involve mainly faculty and graduate students in architecture, landscape architecture, and planning. The Center supports courses for a multidisciplinary graduate certificate in Health Design, which presently enrolls about 20 Ph.D., M.Arch , and MLA students. Current research and design projects focus, for example, on women's healthcare facilities, nursing homes, neighborhood clinics, healing gardens, restorative landscapes, accessible communities, and benefits of nature for elderly.
The College is one of ffie largest university programs in ffie United States concerned with the design, planning, and construction of environments. (Approximately 106 faculty PTEs, 1400 undergraduate students, 375 graduate students.) Responsibilities as associate dean included research policy, research development, administrative oversight for external contracts and grants that on average exceeded $3 million annually, programs for awarding seed grants for scholarly and creative projects, and administrative responsibility for seven (later eight) multidisciplinary centers and laboratories. Activities of the college span the full research continuum-from community outreach (funded, for example, by HUD and line items from the Texas Legislature), through application-oriented projects, to basic research funded by such federal agencies as NSF and NIH.
