    Working for Willington Since 1995
    Our Mission
Our mission is to offer credible and accountable officials who will show leadership and possess distinct moral and ethical standards rooted in the democratic process. We will provide teamwork and communication between town boards, board members, and townspeople to establish responsible, common-sense government.
    Who We Are
A Sentinel Party is a Willington political party dedicated to Willington issues. It was formed in 1995 by a group of Republicans, Democrats and unaffiliated voters who wanted more for Willington than just "business as usual". It is a party with a mission, with ideas, with goals, and with people dedicated to achieving them. Members have one common characteristic: good, honest people willing to give up a few evenings of their time to try to do the best they can for the community. This is public service as it was intended. The philosophy of A Sentinel Party is simple: fiscal responsibility and accountability, active citizen involvement, open government, and constant improvement. We believe in the democratic process in which the townspeople and the taxpayers are the legislative body of this town. We believe that teamwork and communication between town boards, board members and the townspeople are necessary ingredients of a successful government. We believe that an active, informed citizenry must be involved with the governing process to ensure an honest and effective government. We recognize that local taxes are a necessary burden and public officials have a responsibility to control them. We believe that town officials are public servants. Finally, we believe in Willington, because we are your neighbors, your friends, your co-workers, your elected officials and WE ARE WORKING FOR WILLINGTON.

The British Government: The Political Party System Information courtesy of The British Information Services The political party system is an essential element in the working of the British constitution. The present system depends upon the existence of organized political parties, each of which presents its policies to the electorate for approval. The parties are not registered or formally recognized in law, but in practice most candidates in elections, and almost all winning candidates, belong to one of the main parties. Since 1945, either the Conservative Party , whose origins go back to the eighteenth century, or the Labour Party , which emerged in the last decade of the nineteenth century, has held power. A new party - the Liberal Democrats - was formed in 1988 when the Liberal Party, which traced its origins to the eighteenth century, merged with the Social Democratic Party (formed in 1981). These three parties accounted for over 90% of the winning candidates in general elections held in 1992.

Liberal Democrats Liberal Democrats, British political party created in 1988 by the merger of the Liberal party with the Social Democratic party ; the party was initially called the Social and Liberal Democratic party. The Social Democratic party, which was formed in 1981 by politically centrist members of the Labour party , joined with the Liberals in 1981 in an electoral alliance, and in 1983 they won 23 seats in the House of Commons. In 1987 the alliance won 22 seats, and the next year the parties merged. In the 1997 parliamentary elections the Liberal Democrats won 46 seats, the largest number won by the group since the predecessor Liberals held 59 seats in 1929. Nonetheless, the party remains a minor party in British politics, its centrist position threatened by Tony Blair 's movement of the Labour party away from socialist positions.

Building an Independent Left Political Party
    John Brady
    Friday, December 8 2000, 8:13 PM
These last few weeks have provided some of the most exciting moments in American electoral politics for quite some time. With the exception of the three ringed circus instigated by Ross Perot in 1992, most presidential elections in the last twenty years have been routine affairs. The campaigns were hard fought to be sure and provided some memorable moments ("Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy!"). But when it came time to cast votes, most races weren’t that close at all, and the network news anchors could, without embarrassing either themselves or their profession, declare the winners relatively early on Tuesday evening. Add to this the basic consensus between Republicans and Democrats, an ideological wet blanket that puts a decided damper on heated public debate about political principles in this country, and you have a formula for less-than-spellbinding electoral politics. Not so this time around. Since the roller coaster of election day, we have been treated to one new crucial development after another, as the campaigns have maneuvered for position, the people have protested and shouted, and the pundits, as they usually do, have talked too much. If only politics were like this all of the time. TV news would finally be worthwhile.

You can read on this web site about the history of the party, with its roots in the great Whig tradition of Liberal England during the height of the Victorian Era, to its modern incarnation after merger with the SDLP in recent years. The main patform for Liberal Democratic politics is to change the voting system to give, as the party sees it, a fairer dsistribution of power according to voting strength. On most issues Liberal democrats would be described as being on the centre left of British politics, and currently have a close alliance with Tony Blairs New Labour. NetLondon.com politics
