South Carolina to hold Democratic presidential debate MORE INFO BELOW
FEBRUARY 2003 Alex Sanders, the retired College of Charleston president who was the party's nominee for U.S. Senate in 2002, will moderate the nation's first Democratic presidential debate in South Carolina on May 3. The debate coincides with the party's annual state convention in Columbia. Already, several presidential candidates have agreed to participate, including U.S. Sens. John Kerry Joe Lieberman and John Edwards, U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt and Vermont Gov. Howard Dean . Commitments haven't yet come from the Rev. Al Sharpton or U.S. Sen. Bob Graham , who is expected to enter the race in April.

November 10, 2002 Moving the Political Center
By Royce Carlson Now that the mid-term election is over in the U.S. and the Democratic Party has lost ground in Congress, what strategies should be adopted by the left to prepare for the elections in 2004? Here are some of my thoughts and ideas on this. Click here for a printable version of this article. The political center is not static. The Bush administration’s approach is to come on strongly right and then slowly let the opposition push him toward the center. For example, when he first took office he said he was going to try to repeal almost everything Clinton tried to do for the environment during his last months in office. Over the next few months, Bush received a lot of opposition from the environmentalist community and eventually ended up leaving some of Clinton’s work in place. So, things did not end up as bad as they could have been, but they still ended up bad for the environment. Bush came on strong against Iraq with his threat of immediate unilateral military action, but over time, has conceded to involve the United Nations. A war still appears imminent, however. In this way, Bush and the Republican Party are moving the center toward the right and the Democrats are following the center rather than holding their own.

Wednesday, May 8, 1996 Soft Money Tops $84 Million In First
15 Months Of Election Cycle
Soft money totals soared in the first three months of 1996, as national political party committees raised $25,473,844, more than double the $11,984,290 they raised in the first three months of 1992, the previous presidential election year, according to a Common Cause study released today. In the first 15 months of the current election cycle, the parties have surpassed the $84.4 million in soft money they raised during the entire 1991-1992 election cycle, according to Common Cause. Political party soft money fundraising for the 1996 elections totaled $84,620,224 during the 15-month period January 1, 1995 through March 31, 1996, more than twice the $36,951,649 raised during the comparable period in the 1991-1992 presidential election cycle, the study found. President Clinton and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) have raised a total of $85,435,059 in soft money since Clinton's presidential nomination in July 1992. President Clinton is scheduled to host the 1996 National Presidential Gala, a DNC fundraiser, on May 8. The Washington, D.C. gala is expected to raise $11 million. "Tonight's DNC fundraiser is a dinner date the average American cannot afford, open only to the wealthiest individuals and biggest campaign contributors," Common Cause President Ann McBride said. "The huge soft money contributions given at tonight's Democratic fundraiser will continue to buy access to the President and other top officials, and will continue to influence government decisions, long after the dinner is over."

Tobacco Interests, Philip Morris Set New Soft Money Records; Industry Contributed Nearly $2 Million In First Six Months Of 1996 For Immediate Release:
Monday, July 29, 1996 As the debate over tobacco intensified this election year, tobacco interests gave $1,973,242 in soft money to party committees during the first six months of 1996 a half-year tobacco industry record, according to a Common Cause study released today. The six-month tobacco industry soft money total includes $1,638,642 in contributions to the Republicans and $334,600 to the Democrats. This brings to $4.75 million the tobacco industry's soft money total for the first 18 months of the 1996 election cycle, more than double the $2.3 million they gave during the comparable period in the 1992 presidential election cycle, according to the Common Cause study. In addition, tobacco interests gave $2.1 million in political action committee (PAC) contributions during the period January 1995 through June 1996, the study found. Philip Morris, the country's largest cigarette company, was the biggest soft money donor to the political parties during the first six months of 1996, according to the study. The company gave $802,384 in soft money during the period $652,134 to the Republicans and $150,250 to the Democrats breaking its own record for soft money contributions from a single donor during the first six months of a year, according to Common Cause.

While it is unfortunate that President Bush did not achieve the peaceful disarmament of Saddam Hussein through diplomatic means and that Saddam Hussein did not heed President Bush’s call to step down, it is critical at this time for all Americans to unite in support of our military forces.
At this moment, nearly 250,000 American patriots are in the Gulf region, including a member of my family and my staff, waging a fierce battle against Iraq’s brutal dictator and ready to sacrifice their lives on behalf of our great nation. My full support, thoughts, and prayers are with these brave men and women, as well as their families. The Post-Reconstruction Era
Democratic Political Positions
The Democrats of this era generally campaigned in opposition to Republican programs rather than advancing a new agenda. The Democratic platforms usually called for the following:
  • Opposition to expanding pension programs. The Democrats of the South, quite understandably, resisted funding the needs of Union veterans; Confederate veterans received their support, the pittance that it was, from state governments, not from Washington. Opposition to temperance and prohibition efforts The Democratic Party was the home to many Irish, German and later Italian immigrants, few of whom had much sympathy for government regulation of alcoholic beverages. Support for the expansion of the currency. Farming and debtor elements within the Democratic Party pushed for maintenance of the greenbacks and for the coinage of silver , favoring inflation to the rigors of the gold standard Opposition to protective tariffs. Most Democrats backed tariffs for revenue only; since little industry existed in the South, they viewed protectionism as a regional benefit for the Northeast.

House Democrats Elect Pelosi As Their New Leader; First Woman To Head Congressional Caucus
(Washington-AP, November 14, 2002) House Democrats on Thursday made Rep. Nancy Pelosi the first woman ever to head a political party's caucus in Congress. In choosing Pelosi on a 177-29 vote, Democrats tasked the veteran California congresswoman with reviving a party stunned by election setbacks and facing a political landscape in which the White House and both houses of Congress are controlled by Republicans. Democrats settled on the 62-year-old liberal to succeed Dick Gephardt of Missouri, who ended his eight years as party leader after an election where Republicans cemented their control over the House and won back the majority in the Senate.

E-Texts Outline of U.S. Government: Political Parties Political Parties in the U.S. (from U. S. Elections 2000) Today, there are two major political parties in the United States, the Democratic and the Republican.
The Democratic Party evolved from the party of Thomas Jefferson, formed before 1800. The Republican Party was established in the 1850s by Abraham Lincoln and others who opposed the expansion of slavery.
The Democratic Party is considered to be the more liberal party, and the Republican, the more conservative. Democrats generally
believe that government has an obligation to provide social and
economic programs for those who need them. Republicans are not necessarily opposed to such programs but believe they are too costly to taxpayers. Republicans put more emphasis on encouraging private enterprise in the belief that a strong private sector makes citizens less dependent on government.
Both major parties have supporters among a wide variety of Americans and embrace a wide range of political views. Americans do not have to join a political party to vote or to be a candidate for public office, but running for office without the money and campaign workers a party can provide is difficult.
